J.D. Power: Apple iPhone ranks highest in smartphone user satisfaction – again

JD Power has released their 2009 Wireless Phone Satisfaction Study Volume 2.

Highlights from the study includes:

• Apple ranks highest among manufacturers of smartphones used primarily for personal reasons, with a score of 811, and performs particularly well in ease of operation, operating system, features and physical design. LG (776) and RIM BlackBerry (759) follow Apple in the rankings.

• Among customers who use their smartphones primarily for business purposes, Apple ranks highest with a score of 803, followed by RIM BlackBerry (724).

• Among consumer smartphone owners, 22 percent want Wi-Fi capability in their next handset, while 21 percent want touch-screen capabilities and 17 percent want GPS capability.

• More than 40 percent of consumer smartphone owners report entirely replacing landline calling with mobile phone calling, while only 27 percent of traditional handset owners have done the same.

• Among business smartphone owners, more than one-half report downloading third-party games for entertainment, while 46 percent report downloading travel software such as maps and weather applications—indicating business users are also integrating their devices into their personal lives. In addition, nearly one-half of owners (46%) report downloading business utility applications to increase productivity.

  1. No surprise on personal users, but higher satisfaction for business users as well? Watch your back RIM.

Between this and the CFI survey last week showing that less than half BlackBerry owners felt their phone was their ‘ideal smartphone’, I’d say it’s time to panic north of the border.

  2. I personally am ecstatic with my iPhone. Never had a cell phone that actually worked for its main purpose and as for the apps, it is just icing on the cake.

However, I am somewhat bewildered that a product could receive such high accolades, as evidenced in this report and virtually every other similar studies for that matter, if the service provided by AT&T;were as bad as some have blogged here.

Either, the study was only conducted on users using their iPhone in ‘Airplane Mode’ or the majority of dissatisfaction as evidenced on the blogs were more often bogus. I personally, chose the latter.

Most of the panic north of the border comes from Rogers now that both Telus and Bell will be carrying the iPhone and greedy Rogers will lose a lot of future iPhone customers.

Speaking of North of the Border, there are many places in Canada where North of our Border we Canadians can see parts Alaska, Washington State, Michigan and Maine.

Well neighbor, I must say as someone who can see Canada from my work place (in Washington State), I have a bit of ‘keeping up with Jones’s’ envy. I’m annoyed that that we don’t have the the choice of Iphone carriers that you do. It makes me wonder who got the better part of exclusive deal between Apple and AT&T;.

But If one thinks about it, we really wouldn’t have that much choice. T-mobile is the only other carrier that could actually be the ‘other’ carrier as it is the only other GSM network in the States, T-mobile in Germany carries the Iphone, So I’m sure they would jump at the chance.

I wish we could keep up with you guys in cell phone carrier options- and a better health care system as well…..

So despite my envy, I hope you get a great deal.
