KDDI sees growth stunted by SoftBank’s iPhone 3G launch in Japan
Friday, August 08, 2008 - 02:47 PM EDT

"Japanese wireless carrier KDDI has seen its growth stifled in July primarily by the iPhone 3G launch the same month, according to a report from the company itself," Electronista reports.

"The company's subscriber growth was near flat at just 17,000 new users for the month and saw the first month KDDI has known where the amount of cancellations with phone number portability, or the number of customers switching to rivals, overtook new subscriptions of the same kind," Electronista reports.

"The sudden downturn comes just as the iPhone's official carrier, SoftBank, saw an immediate spike and added 52,000 new users," Electronista reports.

63 years later and we're still dropping bombs.

Aug 08, 08 - 03:18 pm Comment from: HMCIV

The iPhone has become the scapegoat for phone makers and wireless vendors falling profits. For $1000 I'll sell you an app of an iGoat chewing a KDDI RAZR.

Is this company getting screwed considered KDDI porn?

Aug 08, 08 - 03:23 pm Comment from: Sir Gill Bates

Hmmm. Mere coincidence? I think not.

Aug 08, 08 - 04:02 pm Comment from: MidWest Mac

@ R2

Great analogy. The iPhone is a lot like 120,000 people being instantly incinerated.

(and no, let's not get into a political debate here about how many lives were saved by the bomb, blah, blah, blah — necessary evils are still evils)

Americans danced in the streets when that war was over.

Palestinians danced in the streets when the twin towers fell.

Coincidence, I think not.

Aug 08, 08 - 05:15 pm Comment from: Big Al

For that matter Japanese danced in the streets after the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor.

Aug 08, 08 - 05:45 pm Comment from: Spark

@ichi--- I agree.

@ MidWest Mac--- if you don't want a debate, don't start one.

My Softbank and iPhone experience in Japan

I bought my new iPhone on Wednesday night. It took over an hour even though the Softbank store was empty and staffed with three salespeople.

My wife and I were presented with a sheet of about twenty caveats that we had to sign before getting the phone. Two are some highlights:

1) The iPhone cannot do EMOJI (wikipedia that). "Is that ok?"
2) I'd lose my softbank email address for a newer softbank email address.

plus others that I cannot remember or completely understand.

The 16GB iPhone costs:

¥5250 up front

¥2990 x 5 months
¥3980 x 1 month
¥4730 x 18 months (24 month plan)

After two days, I cannot get voicemail or gps to work. I'm returning to the Softbank shop today or tomorrow.

Otherwise, the iPhone is great.

And best of all, people will dance in the streets when
G.W. Bush drags his sorry ass out of the White House.

Now, like MidWest Mac said, let's not get into a political debate.

Jim in Japan, My experience with the iPhone has been better. The only thing disappointing is that I can only get the map of Japan to change to English. For 98% of the people here that is not a problem. grin

For support, I have had better luck contacting Apple Support. Softbank's help line is still rather busy.

After the firmware update my iPhone said no SIM card Available. A restore didn't fix it.
Wasn't sure if I should call Apple or Softbank. Called Softbank and line was busy. Called Apple and fixed it..

Sorry, I meant. Maps only in Japanese.

I got my iPhone few days ago and had basically no problems. The SoftBank email isn't setup, but don't really need it. After all, there is the Mail app! Reception in my house is non-existant...but since I have wireless it's no problem. All n all I'm loving it!

Aug 09, 08 - 06:57 am Comment from: Blood Bus?

I'm not 100% sure, but I think the MDN take translates to Blood Bus... Blood bath on the other hand would be 大虐殺.

@Wandering Joe,

"Almost lost my coke Amhyre."

I hate when that happens! It's usually on a Saturday night and your "boy" is no where to be found. You would think you'd be hypervigilant on that stuff.
