Kiplinger: Apple iPhone worth every penny
Wednesday, August 22, 2007 - 12:08 PM EST

"Was the iPhone worth the hype? In a word, yes. After putting Apple's first smartphone through its paces, we believe it's the best personal communicator your money can buy. Sure, it has its shortcomings, but they're minor relative to its merits," Jeff Bertloucci reports for Kiplinger.

Apple's "iPhone has so many clever innovations it's hard to catalog them all," Bertloucci reports.

"The bad news is that iPhone doesn't support Adobe's widely-used Flash technology, at least not yet. This severely limits your Web video-viewing options; for instance, you can't watch TV shows at ABC.com," Bertloucci reports.

"Security experts are also reporting that the iPhone is an easy target for hacker attacks. Using the Safari browser, for instance, an iPhone user could surf to a rogue website, which might install software on the iPhone that extracts your personal information. However, no widespread iPhone attacks have been reported thus far," Bertloucci reports.

MacDailyNews Note: That proof-off-concept issue was corrected last month with iPhone Software 1.0.1 update. Version 1.0.2 was released yesterday. Apple's OS X-based iPhone is not an "easy" target for hacker attacks.

Bertloucci continues, "What makes the iPhone special is its clever implementation and sleek design. If you want the best personal communicator out there, here it is."

Geezzzee. Techno knowledge = ZERO. But he is caught in the iPhone's shiny headlights. grin

At least from the short version, he did not linger on issues that are not really issues for too long. grin ""Security experts are also reporting that the iPhone is an easy target for hacker attacks. Yep, the iPhone is WIDE open. Any minute now, everyone is going to jump out of your pocket, steal your wallet and run away with it. LOL Since no one has done so, maybe it's because everyone in the world is such a good person. grin

Maybe I should become a tech writer/analyst???? grin

The thing I'm most excited about concerning the iPhone is the fact that it does not have a finger-print-magnet shiny backside.

Hopefully the new iPod will follow suit.

"Security experts are also reporting that the iPhone is an easy target for hacker attacks. Using the Safari browser, for instance, an iPhone user could surf to a rogue website, which might install software on the iPhone that extracts your personal information."

First, I would consider it an easy target if a hacker could hijack the iPhone via the WiFi connection without a user going to a specific website. Second, it is not necessarily true that passwords could be acquired from that hack. Sure, they could probably use your e-mail at that moment, but they would not be able to port them to another computer to use later.

A big downside to the iPhone is surfing the homepage of MaCDailyNews. IF you click on a link, a new tab opens of an advertisement. You have to click on a story, wait for the ad to show up, view all open tabs, close that one, open the prior one just to read the stories.

What a pain.

"Apple's OS X-based iPhone is not an "easy" target for hacker attacks."

But it is an easy target for astroturfers, trolls, illegal cloners* and frightened competitors.

This is a big danger because I usually keep and email in my inbox with my full name, social sec #, bank account numbers, passwords, mother's maiden name, etc. all listed out in an Excel attachment. You know, just so I have 'em handy.

@ M@C

I just got a iPhone and I love the "soft" feel to the aluminum back sans the digit prints. That little silver apple in the middle always carries one though.

For those interested in the metro Phoenix area, there will be a Mac Club meeting discussing the stock price and upcoming Mac events at Hong Kong Gourmet restaurant in Ahwatukee.

I'm looking forward to the future iPhone's fingerprint-free transparent aluminum face. Where is Scotty when you need him?

Oh, hi all!

Aug 22, 07 - 12:23 pm Comment from: No Squirt For You

I just got my first spam call on my iPhone.

"You have won a free trip. Press one now . . . blah, blah."

Very annoying.
I'll hang up when I see the (877) or any toll-free area code next time.

I agree with Taylor. It is a major pain to access MDN on the iPhone. WTH are you thinking, MDN...fix this!

Aug 22, 07 - 01:38 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

@ NSFY

Haven't had any spam calls on the iPhone yet, but I get a ton on the landline from 000-000-0000.
Makes me think - It would be great if the iPhone let you block a number or a range of numbers right on the phone.

Aug 22, 07 - 02:48 pm Comment from: Woody

@Taylor and Thomas: MDN is not known for being reader-friendly on either iPhone or desktop.

Aug 22, 07 - 03:03 pm Comment from: NSFY

C1: Telemarketing was one of the reasons I cut off my landline phone. I really hope this doesn't pick up (no pun) on the iPhone. Yes, blocking a range of numbers would be great but somehow I don't think AT&T;would allow it. I doubt Apple would care.

Jerry: This isn't a good time.
Telemarketer: When would be a good time to call back, sir?
Jerry: I have an idea, why don't you give me your home number and I'll call you back later?
Telemarketer: Umm, we're not allowed to do that.
Jerry: Oh, I guess because you don't want strangers calling you at home.
Telemarketer: Umm, no.
Jerry: Well, now you know how I feel.
[hangs up phone]

@Thomas

I agree completely. I would like to browse MDN on my lunch break with my iPhone, but with the pop up ads taking over with each click of a linked article, I quickly stopped and have resorted only to browsing MDN with Firefox on my desktop. It blocks those VERY ANNOYING ads altogether.

Aug 22, 07 - 04:00 pm Comment from: R2

I'm going to have an iPhone by this weekend.

If it's true that viewing MDN sucks, it better be fixed. That was one of the things I was looking forward to.

@NSFY

Don't forget about the national "no call list". I have my numbers on the list and haven't had a telemarketer call in years.

Aug 22, 07 - 04:54 pm Comment from: Jooop

Windows Mobile cell phones, which allow, encourage and facilitate the installation of 3rd party applications are a much easier target for hacker attacks than the closed, proprietary iPhone. Reading all the ridiculous, slanted articles that have come out since the iPhone was released, you'd seriously think it's the iPhone that is insecure and Windows Mobile phones are more secure. When you see a meme like this, one which has no logical basis but serves the interest of a number of large, powerful corporations, you can be sure that it originated at a hired PR firm.

mm: "Don't forget about the national "no call list".

Did that but thanks. I think scum operations are willing to chance it.

Aug 22, 07 - 05:31 pm Comment from: popup adds?

I often see people complaining about pop up adds on MDN. I don't ever get them. I use a MacBook with Safari. I keep 'PlugIns" unchecked in Safari prefs unless I need them because I cannot stand things moving on my screen while I am trying to read. I have 'Block Pop-Up Windows' checked under the Safari menu item.
