Kiss your Mac OS X Dock goodbye
Tuesday, July 07, 2009 - 11:05 AM EDT

"When Apple introduced the Dock with OS X, people immediately either loved it or hated it. Over time, we all got used to it. Among some of the usability complaints about the Dock is the fact that, without hacking, you can’t simply get rid of it. Hiding the Dock will only get you so far — it still pops up at inopportune times. If you’re frustrated by the inability to completely hide the Dock, there is a simple solution," James Dempsey reports for TheAppleBlog.

"Enter Dock Gone, by Old Jewel Software. Dock Gone [US$14.95, 15-day demo avail.) is an OS X System Preference Pane which allows you to turn off the Dock completely, not just hide it," Dempsey reports.

"Like any great Mac application, Dock Gone offers more than one option to turn on and off your Dock: via the Preference Pane, a menubar icon, or a keyboard shortcut — which you can customize any way you like. You can even have it play a system sound when the Dock is turned on and off," Dempsey reports.

i guess Dock Block would have been too over the top.

Jul 07, 09 - 11:16 am Comment from: Dirty Pierre le Punk

Never mind. Hey, I see there's a new version of Crash Doubler out for Windows.

Jul 07, 09 - 11:17 am Comment from: HMCIV

@applesauce Niiiice.

Or just remove Dock.app from System/Library/Core Services. I'll do it for ya for only $10.95

Jul 07, 09 - 11:17 am Comment from: cptnkirk

Wow! Next they'll give directions for getting rid of your speedometer, fuel gauge and tach. Foolish!

Jul 07, 09 - 11:20 am Comment from: Lolcat

Inopportune times...? I guess I must fall into the love it crowd, or the, I don't see the problem with it crowd.

Jul 07, 09 - 11:24 am Comment from: jtc

I think its not a bad idea. I'd like a keyboard shortcut to toss the dock when I have my design apps open.. then I have 2 screens.. so I dont really need that extra small amount of pixels with the dock gone.

@HMCIV

haha I'll do it for $9.99 and that includes tax!!

Jul 07, 09 - 11:25 am Comment from: Jubei

If it can play a sound file, can I record a sound and have it play that? I want to scream and record, "WINDOWS IS A POS" every time the dock pops up. Or maybe say " Palm Pee Pee"... the possibilities are endless.

Jul 07, 09 - 11:27 am Comment from: TowerTone

I can't reach my Dock with my lips....

Jul 07, 09 - 11:29 am Comment from: Fergman

I love it and shiny screens as well. My 17" has a HD glossy screen. It makes the dock look fantastic. Crisp beautiful colourful icons.

Jul 07, 09 - 11:38 am Comment from: ron

KillDock is here!

Jul 07, 09 - 11:38 am Comment from: Mr. Dock

Why do I want to get rid of the Dock now?

Jul 07, 09 - 11:55 am Comment from: Cubert

I bet there is a simple way to permanently hide the Dock via a Terminal command and save yourself $15.

Jul 07, 09 - 12:06 pm Comment from: Gosh

I don't mind the dock - it must be a good idea if Windows are copying it in 7.

If anything I would like to be able to assign a key combination for hide dock/show dock.

Jul 07, 09 - 12:10 pm Comment from: auctoris

@jtc:

You mean like command-option-D to hide and show the Dock?

Jul 07, 09 - 12:17 pm Comment from: hbw3

@auctoris

brilliant! where do I send you my check for $14.95?

Jul 07, 09 - 12:30 pm Comment from: It's About Time

I would simply like a Dock that is click activated. Position my cursor at the bottom of the screen and click - Dock appears. Why is that such a difficult task to program???

This "now you see it, now you don't" method has to have been inspired by a mole planted in Cupertino by Microsoft. wink

Jul 07, 09 - 12:47 pm Comment from: LordRobin

I cannot believe people are still whining about the dock after all these years. Sheesh.

I've always used TinkerTool to put the dock in the bottom right corner, then I hide it. It's handy, because the trash can slides up in just the right place, only when I need it.

Jul 07, 09 - 01:00 pm Comment from: Cubert

It's About Time,
I am assuming that what you are asking for is the addition of the click to make the Dock appear rather than just mousing to the bottom of the screen as you can do now?

Jul 07, 09 - 01:12 pm Comment from: AppleJack

@TT . . . Good thing too, or you might never leave your house again.

Re: The Dock
Personally, the option to have it, or not, is the typical feature in Apple GUIs that I appreciate so much. There always seems to be two upfront ways to do things, . . . and then there are the secret key commands.

Jul 07, 09 - 01:43 pm Comment from: HazMatt

Huh, I thought this was an insight into some radical new change in the imminent Snow Leopard. Didn't expect a shareware app promo.

Does Joe Jackson own MDN???

Jul 07, 09 - 01:48 pm Comment from: The Other Steve

It does much much more, get this, it even . . . drum roll please . . . plays a system sound for you!!!!!!! :-|

Jul 07, 09 - 02:03 pm Comment from: Mr. Reeee

I've been using it for a few days and it's great! Using Auto-Hide Dock is okay, but this is SO much better.

About the ONLY thing I use the Dock for is accessing the Trash. Command-Tab and LaunchBar do the rest.

I work with VectorWorks drawings at as close to full-screen as possible. It seems that every time I move the cursor down to page bottom, the Dock is constantly popping up and getting in the way. This solves it.

I set Command-F2 to toggle the Dock on and off.
$10 might be a better price, but it's worth it.

Jul 07, 09 - 02:08 pm Comment from: Mr. Reeee

"I don't mind the dock - it must be a good idea if Windows are copying it in 7."

@Gosh... If Apple does it, it's gotta be good, right?
Microsoft copies anything and everything they can, since they lack any original ideas or, it seems, the ability to come up with any themselves.
Oh, wait... I forgot the revolutionary Big-Ass Table™

Jul 07, 09 - 02:13 pm Comment from: auramac

One of my toes keeps getting in the way- think I'll chop it off so my shoe isn't so tight.

Jul 07, 09 - 02:42 pm Comment from: alansky

Not only do I not mind the Dock, which is hidden on my computers until I need it, but $14.95 is really expensive for such a simple utility! I don't generally have a problem with software prices, but this one is definitely a little over the top.

Jul 07, 09 - 03:12 pm Comment from: neomonkey

Mr. Reeee, why not put the Dock on the side instead of the bottom?

Jul 07, 09 - 03:51 pm Comment from: Micro Me

@neomonkey. That's the first thing I advise new Mac users to do. The screen is wider than it is deep, so it saves useable real estate. It also simplifies the dock appearance.

The second step I advise is to buy DragThing. I have 5 pop-up tabs in the bottom left corner of the screen for less-often used apps, organised by type.

Jul 07, 09 - 04:26 pm Comment from: toby

A third party hack to get rid of something I use 50 times a day...at least....

Mmmm, I'll pass.

Jul 07, 09 - 06:29 pm Comment from: theonetheonly

how much does MDN get for each sale of this "shareware?"

MDN Magic Word: shareware. as in Old Jewel Software is sharing the sale of their wares with MDN.

Jul 07, 09 - 06:58 pm Comment from: Tommyr

I like my dock, he helps keep me alive.

Oh wait........never mind........

Jul 07, 09 - 07:00 pm Comment from: Nobama

I too use the dock every day. I have it on the left on autohide and it pops up only in Photoshop once in a while.

I can see how some people wouldn't like it though.
You know, the .02% of people who find that having a convenient place to launch apps, open files and hide windows is just plain annoying.

And it's annoying to have the Trash in the Dock too, because it's impossible to send stuff to the trash or empty it without seeing where the icon is located...

Jul 07, 09 - 07:59 pm Comment from: Jim of D

Correct me if I'm wrong but is this the first time did a MacNN-like infomercial?

Jul 07, 09 - 11:51 pm Comment from: Gordon

@ Nobama
" because it's impossible to send stuff to the trash or empty it without seeing where the icon is located..."

Command Delete - send selected item(s) to trash

Jul 08, 09 - 12:12 am Comment from: Mr. Reeee

neomonkey...
Same problem with Dock on the side... I keep hard disk icons and work folders there... where they belong! There's something unnatural about having anything other than folders and hard disks on the right side of the Desktop.

Please Apple, just let me put the Trash in the Finder window sidebar. Please?

@Gordon... True enough about Command Keys for the Trash. My question is where the fuck is the Command Key to OPEN the Trash?
... y'know, after you realize that you hit Command-Delete a few times without thinking. I NEVER empty the Trash without checking first!

Jul 08, 09 - 01:11 am Comment from: garymac

How 'bout we change it back to its old name... the "Chooser"!
I use it constantly. If it's in the way, I move it to the side. Learn the shortcuts, people! No need, at all, to spend money on something like this. That's why we bought Macs... everything's a couple clicks away, and, included in the price you pay for your Mac, along with some other pretty spiffy software.

Jul 08, 09 - 01:14 am Comment from: @Mr. Reeee

command "O", just like in the "File" pulldown.

@auctoris

command + option + D works nice... UNTIL you move the mouse over the bottom of the screen and it pops up again.. which is not fun if you have illustrator or photoshop open full screen and move the mouse to the bottom.. would be nice to have a key combo that hides it AND wont pop back up

Jul 08, 09 - 01:31 pm Comment from: Da_Father

Isn't there a s script or can use terminal to disable the dock? Why spend $15 to do this? I agree with Nobama.
