Gary Krakow: ‘Steve Jobs has either gotta get BlackBerry or Windows Mobile on iPhone’
Wednesday, June 04, 2008 - 11:22 AM EST

Gary Krakow, formerly of MSNBC and currently TheStreet.com's senior technology correspondent, has always stuck us as a doddering, out-of touch, wannabe-but-ain't techie.

Now he's gone beyond simply being out-of-touch to completely out-to-lunch. On the issue of what "Steve Jobs needs to do to get the iPhone competitive in a corporate environment," Krakow intones:

Steve Jobs has to bite the bullet... He's either gotta get BlackBerry on there or Windows Mobile on there. It's the entire answer.

Here, just watch the video:

MacDailyNews Take: Wha? Was that a joke? Sonuvabitch, if that mess is what passes for a "senior technology correspondent" on TheStreet.com, then TheStreet.com is even more useless than we previously believed (which would be an impossibility). What a train wreck. Krakow must have incriminating video of Jim Cramer. That's the only logical explanation we can imagine that accounts for his continued employment.

No wonder our Industry is so screwed up. Managers read this stuff and base their decisions on it--and you know it's the truth. Now that's scary!

Jun 04, 08 - 10:27 am Comment from: January 24, 1984

I know a couple of people who cling to their Blackberries like lovers. The kind that take it to the bathroom, and check email during meals.

Children.

Addicted children.

what an idiot. Did he forget how much the iphone is killing windows mobile already? RIM better get their crap together... they are going down fast. Interesting to see numbers after the new iphone is out.

I am here laughing my ass off at this assclown.

Oh my God. He looked like he was making it up as he went...

This must be the joke of the day.

Jun 04, 08 - 10:31 am Comment from: JAYGEE

I don't understand. Is he saying that the iPhone should run the Blackberry OS, and Windows Mobile, on the iPhone hardware?

If he does, that is foolishness! Why replace the iPhone OS, with a crapper mobile OS?

The iPhone has only been in the market for around a year. With 2.0 coming out, and 3G capabilities, and being sold in loads more countries than before, it should take off.

Jun 04, 08 - 10:32 am Comment from: jeffr

After watching the video it is quite clear the man is drunk, nothing like a cocktail or ten to dull an already dull mind.

MW: waiting
as in "I'm am tired of waiting for my new iPhone"

This boob is about as far out of touch with reality as you can get. Any 2nd Grader can add 2+2, but for some reason KraCOW can't. Don't forget to pick up the new 3rd Grade book about Gary's life entitled "Why Gary Can't Analize".

SAY WHAT!?!

TERMINATE THIS GUY, JIM. IT'S NOT WORTH KEEPING HIM EMPLOYED!

BOO-NO!

Jun 04, 08 - 10:40 am Comment from: Jubei

Is he serious? He wants Apple to license Win Mobile or BB and use it on the iPhone? hahaha

I can understand his issue, you can't beat a monopoly. But Apple is sure doing a pretty good job right now.

Jun 04, 08 - 10:41 am Comment from: mark

yes, he is useless.

now if he had said Jobs needs to get email like Blackberry, and MS Office-compatible functionality...

Jun 04, 08 - 10:41 am Comment from: Rob

He's behind in shaving and haircutting technologies for sure.

Jun 04, 08 - 10:41 am Comment from: Gabriel

"Gary Krakow, formerly of MSNBC..."

...I think that explains his cluelessness right there.

Jun 04, 08 - 10:41 am Comment from: Steffen Jobbs

I wonder, when the iPhone gets exchange support,if it will support exchange as well as WM,or as well as Nokia or Palm for example.

With WM 6.1 and Exchange 2007, you can not only remote wipe the device, but you can selectively disable the camera or the bluetooth or the wifi etc.

Will Exchange Activesync on the iPhone just bring push e-mail and remote wipe,or will it go the whole shebang. I suspect not.

Jun 04, 08 - 10:42 am Comment from: macoverdose_dot_com

lmfao... is he off his meds?

This guys is a freakin idiot!!! Did someone forget to tell him that it's time to retire? If not, dude take it from me, you are not in the loop anymore, you peaked a long time ago and it's time to go play chess in the park and feed the squirrels. By the end of 2008 this video will haunt you...

I have a "corporate" Blackberry. And the only thing I can see it's tied to is Microsoft Exchange Server. There's absolutely nothing else going on with this thing.

Once version 2.0 hits the streets and works well with Exchange, then that will open up the technical ability for Corporate America to embrace the iPhone. Plus all of the other development of 3rd party apps.....

Jun 04, 08 - 10:45 am Comment from: peragrin

screw firing him. make him wear a red shirt and stick him on a remote island with a large monster. If he can make the windows mobile device work long enough to call for help, and surivive until help arrives he can live.

Jun 04, 08 - 10:45 am Comment from: Mac+

It would have been smarter for him to say that the iPhone, if it is to succeed in the corporate world, should ABSOLUTELY offer a lot more capabilities than the Blackberry and Windows Mobile. That said, I trully think this is achievable by the firm of Cupertino.

The guy forgets something when saying Apple wouldn't make an agreement with MS or RIM to enlarge iPhone possibilities because they wouldn't want to pay for the rights, etc... Big mistake!!! Apple is already MS Exchange compatible.

Jun 04, 08 - 10:47 am Comment from: M.X.N.T.4.1

What Apple need to do is add the things they're adding in 2.0 and then in time educate people to the fact that a lot of the stuff they cling to on a Blackberry and windows aren't important, they're just made to think they are because they're expensive and involve lots of technical support to keep running. And as luck would have it that's what they're doing.

Jun 04, 08 - 10:49 am Comment from: iPhone 2.0

I heard blackberry was working with the iPhone SDK and that they will be providing a blackberry service or connector that will enable you to use you iphone with your current email.

Jun 04, 08 - 10:49 am Comment from: Skeeter

Has this idiot been living under a rock for the past 6 months???

Jun 04, 08 - 10:50 am Comment from: gregmills

This guy doesn't get it at all.

Anybody out there willing to trade their iPhone for a cell phone running Microsoft Mobile? Or for a Blackberry? This really get back to insecurity in the technically challenged, who think nothing better can be invented, why even try. I had a friend call me with a problem running his PC due to Malcrosoft issues and I suggested he soak his PC in a bathtub of warm water with a couple of hands full of epson salt overnight and get a Mac in the morning. That always works... I think the Microsoft bugs, viruses, worms and trojan horsed are all killed that way....

Jun 04, 08 - 10:50 am Comment from: Gary's on Krak

I have a couple of take-aways from this:

1. Gary Krakow wears girly-man glasses.
2. He probably throws like a girl.
3. His assertion that Apple should run the Blackberry or Windows Mobile OS is either insane or
4. A desperate attempt to get clicks and attention or
5. He's been paid off by RIM and Blackberry to sow FUD or
6. He's working with Cramer and his hedge fund buddies to short Apple stock.

Either this, or it's proof that the end of western civilization as we know it is nigh. For our good, I do hope not.

Whatever. Dick.

Jun 04, 08 - 10:52 am Comment from: April Fools?

I had to check iCal to make sure this wasn't an April Fools joke. How out of touch can a person be? I say you rip off Gary Krakow's face and you'll find a grinning, pit-stained Steve Ballmer.

Jun 04, 08 - 10:55 am Comment from: huh?

Looks like they roused him from a 2-year hibernation and asked for his take on the iPhone.

Jun 04, 08 - 10:55 am Comment from: Wealthy Industrialite

Jun 04, 08 - 10:58 am Comment from: AppleJack

Hmmm,
I thought Google was about to eat MS's lunch on non-iPhone hardware.
Someone check this guy's cell phone, and see if it has a rotary dial.

wow......just wow

Jun 04, 08 - 10:59 am Comment from: HolyMackerel

I have a Windows Mobile phone in a corporate environment and I am NOT happy with it, nor are my 30 colleagues. The decision was decided by one guy and most have discarded them at huge cost to the company.

I'm waiting for the 3G iPhone as are no doubt thousands of corporate users. Many of us do get a choice of phone as long as it can come under the one lease/purchase program.

I don't think Blackberry won't die or even reduce in size, but more non-smart phone users will move to their next phone being a smart 3G iPhone.

Jun 04, 08 - 10:59 am Comment from: Botvinnik

That man is drunk. "jeffr" is right.

Jun 04, 08 - 11:00 am Comment from: Synthmeister

. That guy was rambling so much, I kinda went into a catatonic state till the interview was over.

Oh well, the chick was cute. Too bad she didn't ask any obvious questions, like why Apple is beating the crap out of MS in the smartphone market.

Jun 04, 08 - 11:00 am Comment from: elby

I bet its stories like this that MDN editors really enjoy! You know the Apple fans are gonna post like crazy. (Myself included) They probably post it, set the stop watch and bet the over/under on how many comments the story will generate within the first 20 minutes. Okay - fess up editors, who's buying beer today?

Jun 04, 08 - 11:01 am Comment from: critic

I think he is perfectly qualified to be employee #3 at The Enderle Group.

Jun 04, 08 - 11:05 am Comment from: Zune Tang®

This guy gets it. That crappy OS X might appeal to a couple of teenage girls but in real world corporate environments you have to be running Windows Mobile. Maybe BlackBerry, but definitely Windows Mobile.

Boo hoo you little MAC crybabies, you don't get to use your proprietary toy OS on your Zune wannabe I-Phone at work. Grow up and get a real phone running Windows Mobile.

Your potential. Our passion.™

Jun 04, 08 - 11:06 am Comment from: MacNScott

These people continue not to grasp that Apple makes the total package. It is the software AND the hardware. Get it?

Geez..

Jun 04, 08 - 11:07 am Comment from: Splat

WOW! that was amazingly BAD advice. Is that guy for real, the data I saw said the iPhone had 28% of the market after roughly a year and Blackberry had 41%...still ahead but they have been working at it for decade.

Jun 04, 08 - 11:08 am Comment from: @Mac+

"offer a lot more capabilities"

You're confusing features with benefits. The iPhone's competitors will continue to focus on feature count because that's all they can do. Features are easy to add to any product. Turning features into benefits for the users, that's another story.

Jun 04, 08 - 11:09 am Comment from: Mobi1

"Steve needs to bite the bullet"???

More like Gary needs to put the barrel in his mouth.

Are they aware that the corporate push begins NEXT WEEK?

Nice to know that if I ever lose my job I can get a gig working at "TheStreet" or MSNBC making up things with no merit or basis in reality.

funny stuff

in other news audi has announced the A8 platform will be redesigned using a 1986 chevrolet caprice - CANT WAIT!

Jun 04, 08 - 11:15 am Comment from: Steve516

The guy does not have a clue as to what is coming with version 2.0 of the firmware.

The guy also does not understand Apple and it's approach. Obviously Apple considered going full throttle into the marketplace, and trying to get into retail as well as business markets. But it made a decision to take things slowly and progressively so they could learn about the market, the system they created, and the customers. So they CHOSE to enter the retail market only with the first generation iPhone. It was a CHOICE. And now they are choosing to update the firmware and expand the abilities of the phone to the business market. Again, a CHOICE. Just like Apple chooses to ignore the business market for computers (for the most part), and focuses on retail. It is a CHOICE.

I hate it when folks second guess my choices. I am sure Steve Jobs hates it too, and that it bugs the crap out of lots of folks at Apple.

Pundits like this fool go out there without any clue, and manage to get TV time. It really amazes me.
