KT Freetel looks to get Apple iPhone deal in South Korea
Friday, August 24, 2007 - 10:23 AM EST

"KT Freetel Ltd., South Korea's second-largest mobile service provider by sales, said Friday it is seeking to get the rights to distribute Apple Inc.'s iPhone in South Korea," In-Soo Nam reports for MarketWatch.

"KT Freetel, which controls about a third of South Korea's mobile service market, aims to leapfrog market leader SK Telecom Co. with its high-speed downlink packet access, or HSDPA, services, which were launched in early March," Nam reports.

"HSDPA, which is an enhancement to the global third-generation wireless technology WCDMA, allows faster and seamless data transfer on mobile phones, enabling users to use multimedia features such as video telephony," Nam reports.

"Motorola is the sole foreign vendor in Korea and sells its phones to the subscribers of SK Telecom," Nam reports.

Canada? Canada? Canada? Canada? Canada? Canada?

We need some news about when well see the iPhone in Canada.

I still don't understand why the iPhone was not released in different countries at the same time. With modern production facilites/techniques/resources...they certainly could have produced more iPhones.

Or is it a wireless carrier issue? Again, could have been resolved a while ago though...

I have the feeling that Rogers does not want to give up the cash cow. Their most recent corporate filings indicate that "wireless" and in particular "wireless data" profits are the most profitable segment of the conglomerate.

Apple is likely pushing them to drop data pricing and will also want a cut of the action (ala AT&T;). Rogers may very well be willing to forego the iPhone just to keep profits up.

Magic word: british (and I am in BC)

I'm based in the UK and have been waiting so long for the iPhone that I'm now willing to wait for the 2nd Generation iPhone whenever it's released.

Don't rush out to get the 1st gen apple gear, learn from history.
The 2nd Gen is usually much sweeter wink

Also given that you are limited to Roger's for GSM service, you will be heavily charged for an unlimited data plan judging by the current data charges from those highway robbers!

I wonder how this will work in Korea? I'm there right now, and there are no monthly service rates here. It's all pay as you use. I hope this means I could use the phone as much or as little as I want and pay only as much as I use. $60 a month minimum no matter how little I use it is not fair IMO.

In Norway two companies might get the iphone deal. Telenor and Netcom. Telenor has admitted testing the iphone and is in talks with apple. Netcom is owned by a mayor Swedish carrier who is in talk with apple. And if they get the deal so do netcom.

Could become a win win situation for us!

The party's over as soon as this baby is released. :(

In response to 'How?', I think you got the prepaid phone that is generally used by foreigners on short stays. Basic monthly rate for KTF (KT Freetel) for normal customers is 12,000 Won (~$13).

Aug 24, 07 - 11:04 am Comment from: Of course...

To Wesley... Yes, you are right. I actually have KTF and I just remembered that I have a $13 (aprox.) monthly fee. But, the point is that there are no different tiers for X amount a month for Y minutes. Beyond that fee, it's pay as you go. I hope I can do the same with iPhone.
