You'll that much memory in the iPhone in less than 10 years. It'll be the only computer you'll need. Dock it to your big screen when you get home.

Nothing like hot swappable dicsks and a raid storage array to give my 600MB stream burst speed sustainability; otherwise I'd be running on empty by 95 msecs and be none the wiser.

To think that my eight-year old iMac was a niced sized machine, with only six Gigs.
But I find I feel the need to caution those who criticize the new iMac's glossy screen, and low-profile keyboard. . . . You may feel very foolish when you visit the store, and see and touch one of these shinning gems.

My dad's new iMac is being delivered today, and I'm setting it up tonight, so I'm looking forward to finding out if I agree with you. I'm very skeptical about glossy screens.

Macbook Pro's have an expresscard/34 slot for which you can get eSATA II cards. I have this one: http://firmtek.com/seritek/seritek-2sm2-e/ connected to a 500GByte eSATA external disk. It's a shame the iMacs don't have an expresscard/34 slot....

Yet one more reason to bring out a Mac midi - the power of an iMac and half the expansion capability of a Mac Pro. With that PCI-Express card in the system, do you really NEED internal storage?

@ Chrissyone, Avoid placing objects with reflective highlights in front of the screen, also have any lighting above or behind the screen, it will be perfect then.

@Chrissyone, It's also best not to look at the screen directly: wearing optical sunglasses or utilising the reflection in a nearby window will ensure a very satisfactory viewing experience.

you people who have trouble with a glossy screen are beginning to bore the hell out of me...

My 17" MBP with GLOSSY hi-def screen is simply stunning. And, so far, I've managed to avoid going blind and/or crazy.

The iMacs, ditto. Played with one extensively today.

I can't wait for a glossy option on the 30" Cinema Display.

If all the FUDsters can come up with is this "issue," well, Ha!

Glossy screen sucks for creative pros. You cant get a true impression of the colours with a glossy screen.

How did a story about an external hard drive turned into another glossy/matte screen debate? Glossy screens have won based on consumer preference. Before large high-res LCDs, most high-end CRTs had glossy (normal) screens. Five years from now, most high-end desktop-sized LCDs will have glossy (normal) screens; the matte screen will be the special order option.

How did it go?

This is in a way a "bad news" story for me.

Why?

Because its another reminder that we are long overdue for a step up in our Firewire speeds. Today's 400/800 are outstripped by SATA/eSATA-II, which means that Firewire 1600 is long overdue *just*to*keep*up*.

The problem is that because of the absence of a really high I/O protocol for external applications, externalized applications of SATA are taking over this market, which in the absence of a real published interface standard had resulted in HD's and Cards with an unshielded (internal use) SATA plug, or the better eSATA plug - - and this proliferation results in consumer and marketplace confusion.

Either Apple needs to force standardization on the eSATA interface and adopt it now across their product line, or they need to get FW1600 (at least!) OUT THE DOOR yesterday, with terms that will encourage aggressive & immediate adoption.

Maybe Apple plans to release a mini-tower, or expects you to buy a Pro model, in either of which case, there's no need for a matte screen for the iMac.

Too bad LaCie forgot how to make quality products a long time ago. This wont save them. They are way late to the eSATA party.
