Leander Kahney reviews Apple’s new 13-inch MacBook Pro: ‘I’m in love, the perfect laptop’
Monday, June 15, 2009 - 12:40 PM EST

"Last fall I bought a 13-inch unibody MacBook, and I fell in love. For the last seven months I’ve been head-over-heels with the machine. But now there’s a new love in my life: a brand new 13-inch MacBook Pro, which is shaping up to be the perfect laptop," Leander Kahney reports for Cult of Mac.

"Released last week, Apple’s MacBook Pro 13” is an amazing machine. It’s priced as a starter, but it’s now truly a 'Pro' laptop. It’s worthy of real work. It adds many of the 'Pro' features previously reserved for its higher-end siblings, but costs hundreds of dollars less," Kahney reports.

"It now has an awesome, all-day battery; a bright, energy-sipping screen; and a backlit keyboard. Firewire is back, and there’s an indispensible SD Card slot. And yet it starts at just $1,200. For a computer of this quality and power, that’s a steal," Kahney reports.

"There’s a lot to love about the MBP 13”, but the best thing is the new built-in battery. This battery lasts forever," Kahney reports. "This kind of battery life is reserved for iPods and mobile phones, not laptops.. And who cares if the battery is sealed in? You can’t change the battery mid-flight, but why worry when it’s is good for crossing the entire continent?"

"The build quality remains impressive and true. The unibody MacBooks exude quality. They’re very well built. In terms of looks and materials, the MBP 13” is more or less indistinguishable from the higher priced machines. It’s as good as the 15-inch or 17-inch, but at a fraction of the price," Kahney reports. "The buttonless glass trackpad is a fantastic innovation, a pleasure to use."

Kahney reports, "Yeah, I’m in love... "

Jun 15, 09 - 12:19 pm Comment from: eMax

also.. does anyone have any new macbook air reviews or benchmark postings? all i can find is the older air reviews, nothing with the newer nvida video card, and nothing with the latest rev.

it seems like no1 care about it except for its lower price...

im considering a new 13 macbook, or an air.... i think its a huge opportunity for a review battle.

The 13 incher still has the integrated graphics card, for poorer performance compared to the other Pros.

Well, it's obvious now. Rattymouse is Zune Tang's twin sister.

As long as you remembered/were able to charge it before the flight.

Apple manages to make products that somehow evoke love. My aunt LOVES her MacBook Pro, a friend LOVES his iMac; both are first-time Mac users.

If Microsoft made cars, the wheels would be octagonal, because "after all, wheels have been round for a long time." If Apple made sex toys, the human race would be extinct.

Long time no comment.
: )

Anyway, I just watched a BBC piece on Apple. They had the author of this piece, Leander Kahney (also the author of "Inside Steve's Brain") on. It was just rehashing of old MW footage of SJ and talking heads opining. You get to hear the same piece with the usual and tired sleight: Apple doesn't really innovate so much as repackage the existing technology blah blah. This was in relation to App store, as in the App stores were all about and Apple merely made it a fad etc.

Anyway, at the end of the piece, the BBC Click heads offered that Apple was not interviewed for this piece (repackaged piece more like) as they knew that Apple don't like to discuss internal information so they didn't really ask them. However, it appears, Apple was aware of this piece, and wasn't approving it, and so BBC was told that if they went ahead of this they should consider a poorer relationship with Apple going forward. The guy reporting it seemed mighty proud of that fact as an accomplishment.

What exactly do these no-talents 'tech writers' feel they have achieved or accomplished by going against people with talent and abilities? Is that like Erin Brockovitch (sp?) of tech journalism?

Anyway, seems like iLounge has already picked up on this piece with more details with Apple vs BBC.

Really, why must most of the English press relentlessly bad mouth Apple? What kind of inferiority complex is it that makes you lose any semblence of integrity and overshoot in your criticism?
Do they feel it gives them more credibility as they have freed themselves from those RDF stuff that Yanks and vanity shoppers susceptible to? Because, you know, the snooty Penguin guys said so and it's oh so cool to bash Apple and feel smug about.

Apple, please blacklist BBC, starting with no BBCA on iTunes etc.

Just checked out the new 13-in at the Apple store past weekend. Almost made me want to drop the MBP I just bought last year. It's the perfect combo of MBP, MBA and size. You can almost sense Apple engineers playing with evolving the notebook to a smaller device.

I think it's about as well designed a form factor as we will in a notebook. The next step would have to be something drastically different (the MacTouch?) wink

These guys making these reviews, make me sick!! with jealousy !!

I so want a new Mac :(

When you are struggling to pay the basics , and your 2 1/2 year old iMac was just re built under Apple Care, makes it hard!! hopefully things are turning around!!!

PS, I am in the tourist business in Mexico

picked one of these up last wednesday and it is by far the best computer I've used (upgrading from a PB G4 helps a little). Small and has all the features I wanted: 8GB support, built in battery, and FW.

Yes...it is the perfect machine....

On a different topic, I was thinking the other day how, if your user name is consistent (more for those who have a registered name) here, it'll be interesting to look back in 10 years at comments made by ourselves of what is "so great". As much as I can't picture it, a computer will be released some day that makes this thing look like junk. eh don't want to think about it.

oh, and to find all your comments on these blogs, all it takes is a google search of MDN with your user name as a keyword. I did that the other day and was reading some of my comments I had made years ago (from some other user names that I remembered using at one point) - most of them I didn't even remember making.

Mine arrived by FedEx last Thursday. I absolutely love it. Apple delivers 100% on this machine.

@ MaximumOverdrive:

My opinion of yours:

1. The SD slot is not intended for booting (though is nice it can) so hardly "speed hobbled."

2. The SD slot is not intended for booting (though is nice it can) so poor backup/alternate boot solution isn't relevant.

3. A matte screen option would be great. So would 100 other options.

4. "Glossy screen laptops are nearly worthless unless your in the exact environmental conditions to eliminate reflections."
And your proof for this? I have used a glossy screen now for about 3 months in many different environments and have had no issues. Others I know have similar results. I can't think of anyone I know personally who has used a glossy screen who doesn't prefer them. If your statement were true, where are the hundreds of thousands of people who've purchased glossy screens and now can't use their computers - why isn't there some huge backlash? Why are people still buying them? You sound like someone complaining about those new-fangled automobiles that will never replace the horse.
