Ron, I think that they are using the statement 'Why can't Microsoft get Vista out?' as an event, and I think that they meant "as soon" and not "assume". So, the statement could be written as "I think that there will be another round of doubt, which Microsoft would just as soon not happen."

Another rarely mentioned factor is levels of obsolescence. When Vista finally releases, XP will quickly become obsolete. Meanwhile, one could still be running Panther and get along quite well. Your are not "forced" to upgrade
OS X with every release (not to mention the
hardware implications).

This is just a guess, but when you're a monopoly there's no sense of urgency. when you have 5 percent of the market, you are constantly in a state of panic about losing more share.

Now, back to the topic at hand:

Many PC magazines and analysts alike are saying Vista is a solid leap over XP. The gui finally gets into the most recent century, and the features it ads make sense (even if copied from OS X, which is beyond obvious).

Thus, "How cool/great will Vista be?" isn't the question. That's already been answered. The answer is it will tow heavfty hardware requirements and not quite reach the level of OS X Tiger.

The valid question is "What will Leopard bring to the table?" The is the real question because the answer will show us what Mac users will soon be experiencing, while it will show the Windows world what they can somewhat expect in a few more years.

It's an important question for the entire computing industry for now (Macs), and later (Windows users.

My guess: Virtual OSes, Boot Camp, Parallels, etc... will all become moot, and if you've read my reasons in previous posts then you know why. Suffice to say, paying $199 for XP/Vista/SP5 need not apply...

1) "Just assume" is clearly a mis-quote of "just as soon"

2) The business about the hardware/software integration is so ridiculous. As if Apple's moving faster because they also make the chipset. They always have to get their nonsensical counter-argument in...

Big deal -- Apple steals BSD unix, puts a graphic front end on and sells it to clueless boobs that don't know any better. They call this innovation? What is Apple going to produce next another Bluetooth mouse? Business and consumers will start to look at Apple when they have a real operating system capable of running all the standard applications they are used to using. Since Apple can't even get large software producers to develop native applications then what is there to use? With their stock crashing and the zillion problem with the new mac portables it is no wonder that every month Apple's marketshare shrinks to oblivion. If Steve Jobs had a brain he'd spin off the iPod to it's own company, put the computer company out of business (all they do now is sell standard component parts in a cute case) and take the helm of Disney. Then the computer industry can focus on creating great apps on real operating systems like Vista.

If they changed the sites name to VISTAdailynews then the only thing they could report on a daily basis is how much more Vista is being delayed and how many bugs/viruses are found. I don't know about you but I don't want to read about that everyday

The reality of Vista is that the majority of computer users will think it is the greatest OS ever, because most have never used OS X. It is sad but true. Thurrott is right on this one.

Talking about overpriced hardware looks like ignoring the development of
Apple prices in the past, especially the last years after Mac OS X came out.
It might have up- and downsides not to sell Mac OS licenses to other
companies, but where are all the computers, which can run 2 OS's at the
same time, one integrated in the other? With a competitive price...?
Macusers also tend to high loyalty with Apple, which is a seldom thing.
But the question is why do they do it?
So before anybody judges about any effect of OS 10.5 and Vista, wouldn't
it be better to wait and see, until they are out? Then we can compare and
see, which one suits better and leave ourselves alone, using the OS we
individualy prefer. I am fed up with with the comments that either MS or
Apple are so crappy... Take the one you want, or Linux or whatsoever and
be happy...

Launch times have to be <b>THE most idiotic comparison factor. Sure nobody like systems that take forever to boot, but come on. It takes more than a slightly faster boot process to make a better OS.

Remember, it's not how fast your OS boots up, it's how long your OS stays booted.

Macmania: Numbers aside, the best guess of the installed base for Macs based on a quick google search is 12-16 percent depending on whom you want to believe.

This doesn't change the basic point that MS has a monopolistic hold on OSs used in the world.

Your analogy of comparing OSes with BWM is poor. I'm sure BMW would be thrilled if they sold 5 percent of all cars in the world considering there are several hundred automobile manufacturers in the world whereas there are only about 3 OS which comprise 99 percent of all OS installed.
