Lines form for Apple’s new iPhone 3G S in New York and Tokyo
Thursday, June 18, 2009 - 04:57 PM EST

"Here are two postcards from the front lines of the smartphone wars," Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune.

"The first, at right, shows three college students from Monclair, N.J. — Matt Dodd, 18, Sam Epstein,18, and Keith Hobin, 19 — huddled under borrowed umbrellas in front of Apple’s flagship New York Fifth Avenue store to buy the latest in multitouch cellular technology," Elmer-DeWitt reports. "They arrived at 7 a.m. EDT, 24 hours before Apple is scheduled to begin selling the new iPhone 3G S to the public. The heavy rain hadn’t let up since they arrived and the forecast was calling for more rain into the night."

"The second, below, appeared on the Japanese website +D Mobile (English translation). It shows the roughly 200 customers who queued up Thursday morning near the Softbank flagship store in Tokyo’s Omotesando shopping district to reserve their new iPhones, which won’t arrive in Japan until June 26," Elmer-DeWitt reports.

Elmer-DeWitt reports, "According a second report, smaller lines had also formed at Softbank outlets throughout the city and at many of the electronics stores that line Tokyo’s Akihabara Electric Town."

MacDailyNews Take: Cool umbrellas, guys. Will it ever stop raining in New York?

Postcards from the edge...

Jun 18, 09 - 04:09 pm Comment from: DogGone

Did anyone get the iPhone 3G on the first day at the Valley Fair Santa Clara CA store? I'm trying to gauge how long it will take to pick up my new phones tomorrow from there. I have two reserved but I worried I could be waiting for more than two hours to get them.

Any feedback would be useful. Cheers.

Recession? We don't need no stinking recession!

Have fun, guys. I stood in a line down the street and around the corner at the Apple Store Easton in Columbus for Leopard on the day of, so I know what it's like. You'll meet some great people.

Peace.

Was is anyone waiting when you could have simply ordered it a couple days ago and had free shipping to wherever you are tomorrow? Please explain.

@DogGone,

I would go Stand in line immediately. Or, go later tonight. That way you can be one of the first ones in line, get your phone, then go home and take a nap.

@JDN

Can't. Gotta work. Have a meeting in the morning too so I can't get there at 7. I'm hoping to have an early and long lunch but am expecting bedlam. I was expecting I could pick it up on Saturday but a sales guy at the store said they only hold them for the day. I may have to wait for a few weeks until the demand settles down.

Where can I buy an Apple umbrella?

Jun 18, 09 - 04:29 pm Comment from: ken1w

That's attention to detail...! Only Apple would think to have Apple logo-ed black umbrella handy to give out to the early line sitters, in case it rained. That's priceless publicity and free advertising for the cost of a dozen umbrellas. Or maybe it's a few hundred. I can see a long line of people in the New York rain, all sporting black umbrellas with a white Apple logo.

I think the astounding thing here is the lines in Tokyo. You keep hearing how the Japanese are years ahead in mobile experience and so much more picky. Apple has arrived in Japan.

I can't wait to see the responses in China when the iPhone finally goes on sale there, when all the middlemen are greased, er, I mean the negotiations are finished.

I could have sworn I saw animals lining up two by two, heading for a really big boat...

I'd stand in line just for the umbrella

called "Customer Service" Apple exceeds expectations once again. Their parents will be relieved to know that Apple is protecting their kids from the elements. Sprint/Palm on the other hand - "we don't want no stinkin lineups"

Dedicated japanese! That's a lot of people that far in advance.

Lines form on my face and hands.
Lines form from the ups and downs.
I'm in the middle without any plans ...

Apple openings are "happenings". Sorry to use a phrase from the past, but you guys haven't really enjoyed the Apple Community until you've stood in line for an Apple opening. I've been to three of the store openings, including the first, which just happened because I, like many other people, was curious to see what Apple would do with a storefront.
The sense of community in these lines, especially the Apple Community, is welcoming and heart-warming. Often, those new to Apple wind up in line, and quickly get a sense that these are smart (and mostly decent) people, and that they are in line for a reason.
Try it sometime. You'll like it!

I'm a boy and I'm a man, I'm eighteen. Yes Alice.

freebeer is right. I remember when analysts suggested the iPhone would fail in Japan because the Japanese were too cool for school. Talk about sheep!

They have a proverb over there, "The nail that sticks up gets hammered down."

Conformity is in their blood and I would imagine anyone buying iPhones is a nail that sticks up.

If you had bothered to read the article you would have had your answer. Instead you decided to make this all about you and how clever you are. Enjoy your new phone.

From the article:

“It’s an experience,” says Keith Hoban, a freshman at Drexel University. “This doesn’t happen too often. It’s nice to just hang out at the Apple store, see what happens and be among the first to get it.”

I guess you guys never went to protest marches or demonstrations to check out the "happening", or go to a park to check out what's happening.

I've made two Apple Store "introductions"...not to buy, just to drop in and visit briefly with those in line. So many smiles, such excitement, such niceness and consideration...and happiness and cheers for others as they exit with their new toys. The pleasure of sharing instant communication and appreciation of other Apple users...and stories of how Apple improves our lives.

Just to glance at the new shiny gadgets, to talk with other enthusiasts, and see the beauty of the stores/displays and the pleasure at good sales service. Good times...and great free entertainment. Think I'll drop by the local Apple Store tomorrow at the mall...

Apple lines are definitely fun and must be experienced before degrading. 90% of the comments on the Fortune page insult those in line. Maybe there is something "more important" to most people, but Apple lines are an event in and of themselves. I've enjoyed them 3 or 4 times... it's a party!

There are people waiting in line at the Palo Alto store. I'm heading there tonight, but there was someone there on Wednesday at 3pm.

Some do it because you can be in the media. Some do it because it's kind of exciting. Some don't want to risk that they won't get it on day one because of some UPS screw up. Some do it at Palo Alto to meet some of the Apple people who show up there sometimes (Steve Jobs often does).

I'm doing it because I'm going out on my boat and wanted to make sure I got it early in the morning before my trip...but also because I want to show support for the platform. Support = more apps, more accessories, more Apple products, etc...
