Live NFL games coming to Apple’s iPhone this year
Thursday, July 09, 2009 - 05:39 PM EST

"More live sports are coming to Apple's iPhone: You'll be able to stream NFL football games this season onto the phone via DirecTV's 'Supercast Mobile' iPhone app and its Sunday Ticket 'SuperFan' service," Dan Frommer reports for The Business Insider.

"The app will be free, and video will stream over 3G and wi-fi, but the service is not cheap," Frommer reports.

"First, you'll need to be a DirecTV satellite TV subscriber. Then you'll need the $280 NFL Sunday Ticket subscription," Frommer reports. "And on top of that, you'll need a $100 Sunday Ticket 'SuperFan' subscription."

Has anyone told the NFL that a recession is currently gripping our economy? I'm waiting to see all the empty stadium seats.

When I read the headline I thought, "Holy Shit Batman, Awesome!"

But $380 + switch from DishTV to DirecTV?

Not awesome.

Jul 09, 09 - 04:54 pm Comment from: Anonymous©

So, $380 on top of your DirecTV subscription per year.

I think a Slingbox Solo would be cheaper, at about $130, then $30 for the Slingbox iPhone app. Then you get multiple seasons for a fixed price. Of course, you don't get your choice of games, but heck, there are tons of games on during the weekend. And, the Sling will transmit all of your tv programming or DVR, or AppleTV. However, it does not yet sling over 3G, but I expect that restriction will eventually go away when AT&T;builds out their network some more. I can't imagine that taking more than a year.

NFL they don't know the meaning of the word "Football" and they certainly don't know how to play it.

Who wants to watch a bunch of fat blokes in padding chase around a funny looking pointy ball. And each team has enough players to form 3 teams (offense, defense and special). What the F**k kind of lame sport is that.

Jul 09, 09 - 05:00 pm Comment from: mike_in_helsinki

I ain't subsidizing some QBs annual 20 million salary. You do it.

Jul 09, 09 - 05:44 pm Comment from: Horseman

$100 to get it on the iPhone alone would be excessive, but tempting. But requiring I first have DirecTV AND get the Sunday Ticket is simply unreasonable. I don't expect many subscribers.

Jul 09, 09 - 05:51 pm Comment from: Adam M

I have that package, but I'm not adding $100 just to get it on my iPhone

Jul 09, 09 - 05:52 pm Comment from: The Dude

When I first saw the headline, I thought I would finally be able to get the games since I do not have a South facing apartment (Satellite requires South face). But I guess DirecTV really has a strangle hold on all forms of video broadcast from the NFL.

Really sucks... I guess it will be another season of Real Player bullshit.

The Dude abides.

Jul 09, 09 - 05:54 pm Comment from: Eddy

If i'm already subscribed to the NFL, why would i want to watch on a small little screen , when its on my HD tv?

Jul 09, 09 - 06:02 pm Comment from: The Dude

Eddy,
Do you take your HDTV with you everywhere you go? Ever had to be somewhere where you could not watch the game? This app serves a good purpose, but will be only reaching a tiny market because it is locked to DirecTV... and the hundreds you have to pay to get it.

The Dude abides.

Jul 09, 09 - 06:03 pm Comment from: Evil Monkey

So I would have to switch to a dish and pay an extra $380 just to watch the Lions loose on my iphone. I think not.

Jul 09, 09 - 06:05 pm Comment from: random

I hate DirecTV with a passion. The only reason I ever stayed with them is Sunday Ticket and not even that is going to keep me with them once my contract runs out.

Jul 09, 09 - 06:33 pm Comment from: freebeer

Here's a poor man's semi-live broadcast with the iPhone -
2 guys at the game. One shoots and uploads video on 3GS. The other tweets the updates you can follow.

Tho taping and syndicating the game would probably be illegal. Just a thought.

MLB: $10
NFL: $280

Wonder how much MLB has made off their app? Probably a lot more than the NFL will make.

Jul 09, 09 - 06:52 pm Comment from: Bizlaw

@ Demon:

It's a sport where the teams actually score.

Jul 09, 09 - 06:54 pm Comment from: Byron RoyalT

...and then DirecTV will need to cusk ym kocc.

@Demon,

The padding is to make sure that no one is sexually violated. We in America know how the rest of the world gets down.

NFL - Nancy-boy Football League

Jul 09, 09 - 07:27 pm Comment from: Cubert

Uhhhh.....no thanks. But, good for those who already have DirecTV with that add-on.

Jul 09, 09 - 07:34 pm Comment from: Me In LA

Hmmm, 54" LED TV or my iPhone...
Such a hard decision!

LOL

Jul 09, 09 - 09:39 pm Comment from: Tommy Boy

@ Horseman: You are 100% right. Hell, I might be willing to pay up to $300 per season for the iPhone app to be able to watch any game of my choosing, but there is zero chance in hell that I would consider hooking up DirecTV or pay a second time for Sunday ticket.

@ Eddy: You obviously don't own a video out cable to watch video from your iPhone on your TV (or your friend's TV or your mother's TV or the TV in your hotel, etc).

Jul 09, 09 - 09:43 pm Comment from: ZevFan

"So I would have to switch to a dish and pay an extra $380 just to watch the Lions loose on my iphone. I think not."

Probably no lions loose on you iPhone, no, but very possibly LOSE, yes.

Jul 09, 09 - 09:58 pm Comment from: Macrelated

I enjoy watching football on TV but; apparently the NFL has delusions of grandeur!

Jul 09, 09 - 10:26 pm Comment from: Apple Cider

As of now, the first 2 games of the CFL are available-- no paid subscription and $2.49 to download your favourite games.
(CFL= our balls are bigger)

This is a great app for those of us who already subscribe to this service from DirectTV. All of you who want something for little or nothing need to whine somewhere else. This app will allow me to catch the games regardless of whether I'm able to be in front on my HDTV or not. I'm looking forward to using this to make a great service even better.

Jul 10, 09 - 08:17 am Comment from: Ozy

Major League Baseball gets it. What a great value that is. Love it. Thanks Apple, thanks MLB.

Jul 10, 09 - 08:37 am Comment from: @Ron

"With lots of commercials during all those stoppages."

Actually one of the coolest things in the sunday ticket package is called the red zone channel. It has ZERO commercials and switches from game to game as teams get into scoring position, so instead of watching one game (and all the commercials) you can see every scoring play (most in real time) and skip the sports center review.

The extra hundred dollars gives you access to this channel as well as the ability to watch all the games over the internet also, and now they have included the iphone. If you love NFL football, this is a killer package. Direct tv also has the NFL network which broadcasts several games you cannot see otherwise..

Jul 10, 09 - 09:12 am Comment from: Follower

I agree that the price tag makes me love MLB At bat even more.

Also, if us old folks can remember watching TV on 17" or smaller CRT TVs, I always had more trouble watching football than baseball. At the start of the play, baseball's camera angle has to feature only three people: pitcher, hitter and catcher. The results of the play are also handled by a small number of people, and it's very easy to track where the ball is. At the start of the play, football's camera has to cover about 24 people, so they are much smaller on the screen. The ball can very easily be lost from view when it is run rather than passed. Watching games on the iPhones takes us out of modern large screen and puts us back into a small one (albeit with fairly high resolution). Just another reason that, on the iPhone, baseball wins this one.

Not going to comment on soccer, because I don't argue with people who put mayonnaise on fries.

Jul 10, 09 - 01:55 pm Comment from: justme2

MLB is actually doing it right -- audio available of all baseball games, with video of selected games (subject to blackout restrictions to keep the local rights holders happy). If NFL wanted to do that, I think it would be a hit, even if they charged the $9.99 that MLB's charging. Not everyone can get DirectTV -- if we put a DirectTV dish on our patio it would take up most of the usable space, and as someone else mentioned not everyone has a south-facing patio. Plus there are the folks who live in high-rise apartments where they're stuck with whatever's provided by the management, whether it's Dish or cable.

I always order the Sunday Ticket but never did the superfan. When I saw you could have the iPhone app I wanted it. Called up D TV and said I don't use the ticket enough and will cancel this year unless they gave me superfan free....they did.

Sep 02, 09 - 07:05 am Comment from: sonic view

First, you'll need to be a DirecTV satellite TV subscriber. Then you'll need the $280 NFL Sunday Ticket subscription. And on top of that, you'll need a $100 Sunday Ticket "SuperFan" subscription. But if you're already leaning that way, then the iPhone app will be a great addition to your Sunday rituals....sonic view
