Mac enthusiast Web site offers Front Row, Photo Booth to all Mac users
Tuesday, November 01, 2005 - 03:32 PM EST

With the announcement in early September of the iPod video and new iMac, Apple Computer gave users two new applications: Front Row and Photo Booth. Unfortunately, the applications, Apple said, would only be available on the new iMac and had no plans to put them on any of their other products," MacCentral reports. "While Apple may not have had plans to distribute the applications, Macintosh enthusiast Web site McMac has made both applications available for download."

Obviously, the legality of McMac's move is a question.

Yeah, we shut it down. If you want these nice little programs, get the computer to go with them.

Nov 01, 05 - 03:53 pm Comment from: stupid

i know all us mac heads want these products, but why not allow apple to intro them to other product lines and older models the way apple wants to. all these apps may be part of an ilife update. let's not even go into the legal aspects of this whole thing.

Nov 01, 05 - 03:54 pm Comment from: KenC via iPodDailyNews

I'm sure the two will be included in a new iLife bundle in January, announced at MacWorld SF. The whole point is to stimulate iMac sales for Xmas, and then announce the obvious in Jan.

"I had the links on my site had a few thousand visit but it did not take me down. their host much be crap."

Or it could be the fact that it's illegal and Apple had the site shut down.

Having run Front Row on my Powerbook G4, a 2ghz iMac 20" G5, and a brand new 2.1Ghz iMac G5 I can tell you why Apple haven't released this for other macs yet - its too damned slow on anything other than the new iMac! Sure its useable, but slow to respond, especially on the movie preview screens.
And Apple, please shrink the font size! Many names are too long for the screen and are annoyingly truncated. Front Row desperately needs customisation features - its actually quite annoying to use if you have large libraries.

it is in fact downloadable - hit "reload" a couple of times if you get the error screens.

Nov 01, 05 - 04:14 pm Comment from: Object-X

The web site works but it's getting annihilated right now. I wonder how long until Apple "officially" shuts it down?

Could it be that there might be another part to the real Front Row that is not on the hacked version? tongue wink

Nov 01, 05 - 04:40 pm Comment from: ken

I'll pass. I'd rather get it form Apple when I buy iLife 06 than take a chance that someone has added a bit of malware.

Nov 01, 05 - 04:55 pm Comment from: Reality Check

So much for the elitist comments that it's mostly Windows users that pirate software. Wait till one of these downloads has some script kiddie commands that erases your user partition.
Think about that the next time you're happily typing in your admin password, congratulating yourself on how smart you are.

Nov 01, 05 - 04:55 pm Comment from: db

ya... malware on a mac. That has historically and consitently been a major problem.

Nov 01, 05 - 05:20 pm Comment from: mattyg

anyone tried the dvd+front row package yet? i'm wary of it at the moment

Nov 01, 05 - 06:14 pm Comment from: Gard d zada

if Apple released it, this wouldn't be a problem.

Nov 01, 05 - 06:31 pm Comment from: Eric

I clicked the link to the MacCentral Article and read it, then followed the link to the McMac site... I had closed the original article page, and went to reopen it and it has been pulled.

While I agree that Apple should sell this software as an option for other Macs, I also hope that Apple sues the crap out of the little illiterate bastards who did this.

Nov 01, 05 - 06:39 pm Comment from: LukeinOz

Eric states "I also hope that Apple sues the crap out of the little illiterate bastards who did this."

Strange use of words?!

Why would the assumption be that people capable of making these programs available widely would be illiterate?

My guess is they'd be fairly literate compared to most.

In fact is your lack of understanding of the word literate an indication of your literacy?

tongue wink

Nov 01, 05 - 07:15 pm Comment from: Stripes 1977

Sure we all the software now, but when Apple ports it over to the other Macs, it will work the way its SUPPOSED to work. The hack in its present form is like Windows...a poorly ported program with alot of flaws. Do Apple & yourself a favor and wait till January like 'the rest of us.'

Nov 01, 05 - 07:15 pm Comment from: enamic

Simple - a software agreement, if you actually read it - states not to redistribute the software. Usually. Unless it is Freeware of course.

MDN word: tell. . as in I promise I won't tell.

Nov 01, 05 - 10:35 pm Comment from: twdldee

I downloaded it and it works like a charm. Yup, it sure does. Just love putting executibles into my System Folder from people who have a "McMAC Tech Pirate Podcast" which happens to be indefinately delayed.

They could be waiting until enough "Front Rows" respond back to them to brag about their exploits in the OS X system files of thousands of unsuspecting, eager but clueless Mac enthusiasts.

Catch TWiT next week to hear the old men talk baby talk about this crap.

Enough waste of time!

Nov 01, 05 - 11:21 pm Comment from: Voice of Reason

I was disappointed to see that MDN actually published the link. For the most part, I observe the editors here worshipping the ground that Steve walks on and I would have thought they'd be more supportive of Apple in this case. But news is news and business is business I guess. We better not miss out on a chance to gain a few more visits and click-thrus on those ads. Not even a MDN Take dissuading unsuspecting and possibly ignorant mac enthusiasts of the potential risks. VoR Take: Give your head a shake MDN.

Nov 02, 05 - 01:03 am Comment from: Elmer F.U.D.

Doesn't work with my iSight just a black screen.

Nov 02, 05 - 02:04 am Comment from: Mtnmnn

10.4.3 breaks it. I'd been running it since Oct. 24th under 10.4.2. Pretty cool, needs some refinement though. Has strong potential to be a great app.

Nov 02, 05 - 02:05 am Comment from: ronh

Think diferent......yeah right.

Nov 02, 05 - 05:54 am Comment from: Macaday

Trouble is no-one has the patience to wait for it...

Everything has to be NOW NOW NOW.

..the way of the diginetworld hey?

Let Apple make a few more bob selling the new iMacs. The they'll spend a few more bob looking after you too.

Nov 02, 05 - 12:07 pm Comment from: effwerd

Some of you are so paranoid - must be ex-Windows users. Anyway, if you're worried about security then just be prepared and careful. Install it on a secondary OS X installation. Have a complete backup of your system if you can't do that. If you can't do either of the above and you're still scared, don't install it. If you're really paranoid, check this article. The trouble isn't the opportunity to try out Front Row, the trouble is being a brash and oblivious computer user.

My problem is getting 512 px versions of my custom media icons.

Nov 02, 05 - 09:37 pm Comment from: Peter

Torrent?

I thought MDN readers could do more than just point and click.

Nov 03, 05 - 03:15 pm Comment from: heh

10.4.3 does not break it, you merely have to change the code in the opening script app around, i forgot it, but its out there. also with the dvd player 4.6.2 makes dvds work in front row as well.

Nov 04, 05 - 03:22 pm Comment from: richardb3

May I be forgiven for the unforgivable, but the McMac download is great. Since I can't afford a new iMac at every new release, and since I have been a loyal Mac user and purchaser since the beginning, I decided to take the risk and see what this download is all about. Hats off to McMac for showing what a great app this is. And hats off to McMac for producing a near flawless implementation. With my iMac G5, 1.8 Ghz, 2 GB, running 10.4.3, this thing sings. Even while running a lot of stuff in the background (Mail, Opera browser, QuickTime, creating a movie slideshow with iView Pro), it does what it's designed to do. All four components work, with keyboard commands (I don't have a remote or universal dock). The video preview screens come up instantly, iTunes plays instantly, iPhoto slideshows work, and the app even finds all the .mov files on my computer, even those on an external hard drive! If there's any bad stuff happening I haven't found it yet after 3 + days of use. C'mon Apple, loosen up and make this available for free to the many loyalists who have been buying Mac's and getting the word out for years.

Nov 04, 05 - 03:28 pm Comment from: richardb3

P.S. Even movie trailers are accessed flawlessly. The screen is filled with movie posters, you click on what you want to see, and up the trailer comes, full-screen. It's even easier than viewing them on iTunes. And,oh yeah, the album art in iTunes is full-screen and crisp. Wow!

Nov 10, 05 - 07:24 pm Comment from: The McMAC Site

I have no idea what this "Apple legal" guy is talking about. No part of my web site has been shut down. We regret any contact with Apple Computers over the will of people downloading this program from our web site. Apple, get your facts strait, for once.

i downloaded it, but with no remote for my mini it was pretty useless.
If i wanna listen to tunes i'll just open iTunes..same with all the other apps. i'm gonna wait till it's official with some kind of remote interface.
I've removed it now.
