give me DVD sharing to my appleTV!

hey I can dream eh?

Jan 22, 08 - 01:24 pm Comment from: Randy

Erk, DVD sharing would be sweet. Or, a Apple TV specific Blu-ray player that plugs into the unused USB slot on the back and sits underneath.

Jan 22, 08 - 01:26 pm Comment from: Ampar

Mmmmmm, pancakes.

"BabyGotMac has posted screenshots . . . "

Nice! Hey baby, is that a Power Mac 9600 you've got stuffed in that trunk? Let's hear that booty chime.

Jan 22, 08 - 01:36 pm Comment from: Reclaimer

Hey! The Bakla Obama ads are gone! Yeah!

Jan 22, 08 - 01:39 pm Comment from: Scott

Being able to back up to a disk connected to the airport extreme will please a lot of people, including myself.

Jan 22, 08 - 01:40 pm Comment from: say what?

@Reclaimer

"Bakla"? Is that supposed to be a dig? I don't get it....

Jan 22, 08 - 01:43 pm Comment from: Ampar

Bakla is a derogatory Filipino word for gay. So, now you know just how incredibly clever that was.

From their home page:
"Thanks for visiting BabyGotMac.com - we are currently experiencing higher than average traffic, so please bear with us!"

That's a nice way of saying that their server imploded, collapsed into itself and tore a small hole in the fabric of space and time. Don't worry though. I'm sure they'll get screenshots. Somehow. As soon as the light stops bending.

Jan 22, 08 - 01:53 pm Comment from: Micro Me

I wonder if "List" view ("Stacks" option) will allow hierarchical menus? Hope so.

"Thanks for visiting BabyGotMac.com - we are currently experiencing higher than average traffic, so please bear with us!" lol.. behold the power of MDN

Jan 22, 08 - 01:54 pm Comment from: Jay-Z

Apple should add DVD sharing to Apple TV so you could use it both as a DVD player and as a movie downloader to get rid of one of the boxes we have hooked up to our TVs. Being compatible with our old libraries (DVDs) while introducing a new paradigm would probably help it be adopted more quickly.

ATTN: MDN & Other Blind Defenders of all things Steve Jobs:

Please admit that OS10.5 was released prematurely - based on historic Mac OS releases and Apple's usual practice.

Second, that Steve's obsession with his phone was the cause of the premature release of OS10.5.

And, finally, that Steve masterminded the largest public beta testing in all of personal comupting history with the premature release of OS10.5 much to the frustration of Mac faithful across the world.

Thank you.

Jan 22, 08 - 01:59 pm Comment from: FraterF93

What about "autohide" for the menu, just like my dock in Tiger?

Jan 22, 08 - 02:04 pm Comment from: makemineamac

@ Admission Due - If this was beta testing, it sure took it to a whole new quality level. Apart from a few things that need to be straightened out - like Time Machine options and so on I've had no issues with Leopard.

No release is perfect from the get-go...

Jan 22, 08 - 02:04 pm Comment from: Mac-nugget

I would speculate that Apple is planning something more with this DVD sharing thing. Wouldn't it be cool to plug a USB Blue-Ray drive to your Time Capsule or Airport Extreme. That way you could even backup from any Mac on your WiFi to burn a 50GB disk, and also access it though your AppleTV to watch a movie. Then having built in Blue-Ray players is not longer required.

Jan 22, 08 - 02:08 pm Comment from: not admission due

That is total nonsense. I and my company have been using Leopard since the day it came out, and we have been entirely pleased. No problems that I know of.

Jan 22, 08 - 02:13 pm Comment from: MacConvert

I'd never use a DVD sharing option for the AppleTV since my Blu-Ray player up-converts DVDs to 1080p. Although I realize that Blu-Ray hasn't caught on and the vast majority haven't found a reason to buy one, I don't think that Apple thinks that the AppleTV's use is for optical media (be it installing a Blu-Ray drive or DVD sharing). The purpose of the AppleTV is to get media to your TV without the need for DVDs or next generation discs.

Oy, the site is already slashdotted... I mean, MDN'ed!

@Admission Due
Aren't those Vista beta testers still waiting for their first update?

Jan 22, 08 - 02:47 pm Comment from: Geo B

Actually OS X 10.0 was an extended beta test - about until 10.2.x came out wink Yes 10.5.0 has rough spots - any x.0 release of just about anything has rough spots. Glad to see that 10.5.2 is shaping up as a real hammer to many issues.

Jan 22, 08 - 02:51 pm Comment from: Old Mac Man

Does the update eliminate the asinine glossy screen?

Still won't buy. Love my matte screen.

Jan 22, 08 - 02:55 pm Comment from: Wrong Again

"largest public beta testing in all of personal comupting history"
That would be Vista....

and "computing"

AND it's not done yet. 10.4 wasn't "done" until 10.4.11 (and there may still be a 12 so Leopard's shipping and they're still in "beta" with 10.4!!!) 10.4 probably should have been kept in testing until, say, two months from now. Then, they wouldn't have had to have so many updates. What was the rush? It's not like Microsoft was in a hurry...

Jan 22, 08 - 03:01 pm Comment from: Yours Smugly

Up and down, up and down... Wow, you might actually be able to plug an external hard drive to AirPort Express! The icon bothers me a little though, it clearly shows an AirPort Extreme, not Express. On my MacBook Leopard has a proper icon to AE in the AirPort Utility. We'll see.

The option to switch off the menu bar's translucency will probably also make lots of people happy.

Jan 22, 08 - 03:21 pm Comment from: Ampar

"Does the update eliminate the asinine glossy screen?"

Yes, it does. But there are a few extra steps. After downloading the update burn it to a CD or DVD. Then, prep the surface of the disc with rough grade sandpaper until it has a visible texture. Then, carefully rub the disc over the entire surface of your glossy monitor. This will get rid of the glossiness.

Jan 22, 08 - 03:30 pm Comment from: Jamie

I'm quite happy with my Leopard.

But the ability to backup wirelessly will be most welcome... and it'll mean I haven't wasted my money buying an AEBS and external HD.

LOL LO L nice idea if anybody want to get rid of their glossy screen LOL

Jan 22, 08 - 03:51 pm Comment from: neomonkey

Old Mac Man, you must be new to computing. What did you do before LCDs?

If you don't like glossy, get a can of dulling spray from your local art supply store. Duh.

Jan 22, 08 - 04:02 pm Comment from: Ampar

Welcome fixes:
• List view in Stacks
• Transparency in the menu bar is now optional and can be set in Desktop Preferences

Thank you, Apple Engineers!

And to : grin

Jan 22, 08 - 04:03 pm Comment from: Fred Went to Bed, formally known as Non Ampar

Yes Frater, auto hide for the menubar would be delightful.

But... if the top of a window hits the top of the screen you'd mouse up there, bump against the top and activate the menubar every time.

That's probably the reason they don't do a menubar auto hide.

Old Mac Man:
I have a new iMac, you really do get used to the screen. In the Apple Store it looks horrible, I admit. Here in my office it is simply breathtakingly sharp and clear.

Ampar:
I personally like 'NObama' I mean, even if you like the guy the ads are just at saturation point. If you don't like him it's like seeing ads for Carrot Top everywhere.

Jan 22, 08 - 04:06 pm Comment from: Wrong Again

"What did you do before LCDs?"
They computed on WOODEN screens.... and they were HAPPY darnit! They LIKED it. Oh how they LOVED it.

Jan 22, 08 - 04:21 pm Comment from: Jimithy

@Yours Smugly:

It's the name that's wrong, not the icon. It's an Airport Extreme that was accidentally named 'airport_express' out of habit.

Jan 22, 08 - 04:23 pm Comment from: Ampar

"What did you do before LCDs?"

Stare at a fire until the mastodon meat was done.

Jan 22, 08 - 05:16 pm Comment from: Brau

Y'know, if Apple had in mind fixing Remote Backup all along, why the hell didn't they just say so? They could have saved a lot of disappointed customers a fair bit of grief. That said, I am very happy to see the feature being restored as I already bought an Extreme for that advertised feature alone. Still, I'll cross my fingers hoping they don't axe the feature *again* sometime before the release date.

Jan 22, 08 - 06:28 pm Comment from: Jerry T

Ampar,

Why not just use a "fine" grade of sandpaper applied directly to the screen and save a step?

Jan 22, 08 - 07:10 pm Comment from: Ampar

Jerry T,

Because that would take the update out of the solution and subsequently destroy the sarcastic reply to "Does the update eliminate the asinine glossy screen?" Hopefully, that makes as much sense as necessary. Thanks.

Ampar, you keep me chuckling, even on a suck-ass day like today.

Thanks grin

My iPod touch screen is too glossy

Jan 22, 08 - 07:26 pm Comment from: DLMeyer

1 ... Yes, Leopard was released before it was "ready". Not quite a "Windows" level disaster, but not to Apple's usual standards.
2 ... Yes, you can blame the a) late release and b) premature status of the release on the iPhone. And that has been patched, too.
3 ... kidding, right? This may be Apple's worst case of releasing Beta-ware as ready-ware, but it can't come close to either XP or Vista - and Vista has yet to be patched!

Jan 22, 08 - 07:34 pm Comment from: LorD1776

Old Mac Man,

"Does the update eliminate the asinine glossy screen?"

Don't worry, go ahead and buy the glossy screen. I'm sure that in no time it will have a nice matte finish caused from you spewing spittle and wheezing phlegm from your sputum filled lungs. Just watch that chewing tobacco.

Jan 22, 08 - 07:47 pm Comment from: *sign*

Oh fantastic, I will now have an option to make my menu bar translucent or not... except my iMac G5 apparently doesn't have the graphics to make it translucent in the first place!!! oh well...

Jan 22, 08 - 08:55 pm Comment from: me

Stop lying Leopard is perfect!! These updates just make it more perfect.

Jan 22, 08 - 09:10 pm Comment from: Hm...

@ Wrong Again

Wooden screens! Wooden screens! You were so lucky! We just had broken Etch-a-Sketch screens. And were proud of them, too.

And we walked to school. 10 miles, uphill, both ways. Put baked potatoes in our boots to stay warm — had mashed potatoes for lunch.

The kids nowadays just don't appreciate how good they have it.

Jan 22, 08 - 10:21 pm Comment from: Joe

Ugh, these obama ads really suck... I can't for the life of me figure out why a Mac-oriented site feels the need to pimp Obama all over the sides and top. Can't MDN find better advertising and stop pushing their political agenda down people's throats?

Jan 22, 08 - 10:47 pm Comment from: BabyGotMac.com

Thanks to everyone for stopping by the site. It was MDN, Digg, MacRumors, Ars and several large German sites all in the past day...overall the server kept up pretty well for some 50k+ unique visitors.

Again, thanks for the link and the comments.

@ Admission Due

No OS is perfect, especially when newly released (Leopard included). But if you call Leopard a beta, what's Vista/XP/95/etc? Alpha? At best.

Jan 23, 08 - 08:36 am Comment from: Sixvodkas

@Old Mac Man

If the iHaTorZ teh glossy screen crowd wouldn't resort to out in out lying, they'd have a better chance of not coming across as whiny little beyatch's.
Not gonna admit my age here, but after working for TWENTY YEARS on glossy screens, all I can say is "You people are coming across as lunatics"
