Whoever created that virus was a genius. How did he know the anti-virus companies would double the effect of his virus? Or triple, in this case.

A good article but I lament the fact the stat that there are over 70,000 Windoze and 0 (zero) Mac OS X viruses to date. This is a stat that every Windoze user should be made aware of. It speaks volumes about how crappily the windoze OS was written (the most recent security hole is due to what is being called a "pathetic" error in coding) and totally deflates any attempt to use the security through obscurity myth.

Even if it WERE true that Macs were only enjoying security due to obscurity, there still should be at least a few measly viruses out there for it. In fact there should be 3 percent or so of 70,000 at least; so around 2000 Mac OS X viruses should be out there if you look at it statistically. ZERO is just too few (CAN you call a "non" number too few?) for the obscurity myth to hold water.

The way all this works with the Windows drones is simple:

If you can't debate with the facts, marginalize the superior platform to minimize the glaring reality that OS X is a far more sophisticated OS than Windows will ever be, and as such, was designed to be more secure from day one.

As was said, if this ridiculous "Security Through Obscurity" myth had any basis in fact there would be at least a handful of virus infections attempted on the OS by this time.

Taking down entire newspaper, magazine and multi-media design houses would make a significant impact on the economy. Considering that over 80% of these businesses uses Mac exclusively, one would think someone would have at least tried by now.

How come no one has? I bet many have tried, but given up when they realized it would be too difficult to bother. Especially when you have that Swiss Cheese of a product called Windows sitting there right next to it with all of its ports open and waiting for your worm. ;o)

Microsoft is a virus and it must be stopped.

Well, the classic Mac OS was single-user as well, and it wasn't very prone to viruses either. The problem isn't that Windows comes from DOS (a single-user OS), the problem is that MS doesn't know the first thing about security. All MS operating systems should be banned from the internet!

Finland guy: This is a Mac site. Disney and Comcast have little to do with Apple. I'll admit there is a little interest, but perhaps not enough to accuse MDN of sleeping. It wouldn't surprise me if they passed it over.

I think Microsoft Windows should be subject to massive governement ordered recall from all countries where it is sold. It is clearly a defective product that is causing massive economic waste and is a danger to the international economy.

Make love to a Mac and never worry about VD or viruses of any kind.

"Massive economic waste" should be the least of our worries. When idiots at the DHS (Departement of Home Security) are actually spending millions of our tax dollars buying some virus ridden wintel crap for protecting this country against terrorism, it is our national security that is seriously at risk.

As I said before repeatedly, Microsoft OS IS a very serious and real threat to our national security. Far bigger and more real than Bin Ladden will ever be. God help us.

It's called Virtual PC for Mac 6.1.1

Easy clean up for the OS X found virus. Follow these easy instructions:

1. Locate de folder where Virtual PC is installed
2. drag it and drop it in the Trash
3. Empty Trash

Voila! you're safe now

Windows IS a virus, and Microsoft knows everything you're doing with your PC. That's why there's so many holes, so MS can spy on their users (for marketing purposes). Want to bet against back doors being turned over to the DoJ in return for a slap on the wrist? I'll take that action.

It's intersting that M$ talked up how much they were going to "rewrite" from the ground up when they were working on Win2000. Then again when they were working on WinXP, and now they are "really" going to rewrite when it comes to their next gen OS Blackthorn/Blackmarter/Blackadder.

So why are there so many of the same issues and problems after all of these rewrites? Hmmm?

yes i am a windows user and well i can see the prob with viruses, but its not only mac that doesnt have viruses on, because of the UNIX shell ANY OS with it on is in fact virus free. The linux OS(s) also have no viruses built because it also is running on the UNIX system.
One more point, well 2, if viruses were ever to be made for the interent servers it can mean it doesnt matter if your computer itself has the virus it can use your emails sent to move arround, this is an unlikely event anyway and ALL servers run on the linux OS(s). So I fell that the next gerneration of viruses will be an exsternal 1 rather than in your own computer.
One last point, for all you out there that dont no, if your computer doesnt work or it crashes, half the time its NOT a virus at all; the word 'virus' thesedays are used in the wrong sence.

MS, yes it has to much power and still with the new version of windows are trying to make it even harder for us (i speack for my people) proggrammers to program at all, sugestions of a blocker to stop viruses from ever running, in turn it can only run the proggrams windows says ok to, this wont be long till it is cracked but it means if we ever want to proggram we have to go somewere else. Im not sure but i thinks thats why almost all media creating people chose to use mac more than any OS.

Anitvirus software is a $9 BILLION a year industry! Now we all know that once a corporation is in business it is important to keep growing to make their shareholder happy, so is the incentive there to REALLY end the threat of viruses, spyware, trojans or adware? Not likely.

macs have no viruses. RIGHT. I was infected just today.

I have never in my 18 years of computing used an anitvirus product any longer than it takes to uninstall it.

And the very first week I audition on my new leopard 10.5.1 system I get a trojan (OK -- not a virus, but still an infection I'd never have fallen for on windows.).

Seems that Quicktime has some missing codecs while I'm surfing around looking for sound+video files for a project. Install the recommended "missing" codec -- and wham! Social engineering got me right in the Leopard's kisser.

Plenty of vulnerabilities out there even for expert users treading into new territory. Was able to kill the cronjob and delete the trojan before any major damage.

Fools who say Macs are more secure are just gambling on Mac's relative obscurity... for the moment. Security through obfuscation is no security at all.
