Looking at the distribution of Operating Systems, it would appear that MacOSX is picking up share from Win98 & WinME users, while Win2000 ussers are moving to XP.

Why do I think this? Try to run XP on the same CPU you had ME or 98 on. Also the security on 98 & ME is the pits. Then add into the mix, that these users are buying new CPUs.

As a group, I think they are more likely to choose a Mac, than they would be to upgrade to XP. If this is the premordial ooze from which Mac Switchers come, then the pool is significantly large enough to double MacOSX share in the next 2 years.

Baby steps... smile
go Apple!

Dec 03, 05 - 01:43 am Comment from: Jack A

Wow, for one month that seems like a major gain. How much variation is there in these numbers. If it is usually not much then this could be the sign of a tidal shift.

Dec 03, 05 - 02:16 am Comment from: This is not a tidal shift

You'll know that soon, when you see the REAL tidal shift!

Middle of next year.

Until then, baby steps are good enough!

Dec 03, 05 - 02:59 am Comment from: Willie G

I am astounded that so many people insist on using the most feature- bereft browser in existence

Dec 03, 05 - 03:58 am Comment from: Harry

Well, what a surprice W-98 is above Mac OS X !

Dec 03, 05 - 05:00 am Comment from: Dave H

Hmmm. Looking at that, the Mac could be looking at 7-8% this time next year.

Are these figures global or just for the US & Canada?

Dec 03, 05 - 05:26 am Comment from: Veronica

Well baby it is a jungle out there

Dec 03, 05 - 07:48 am Comment from: Tim Coughlin

Willie G, the answer to that is simple. Most people don't wan or expect a lot from their browsers. All thay want to do is surf and occasionally bookmark something. Thats about it. And for that Safari is excellent, though there are some reliability issues that have crept in since Tiger which need to be addressed.

I would like to see Safari for Windows. It's a great browser and should be made for Windows too.

Dec 03, 05 - 09:01 am Comment from: Tim Coughlin

I agree MacDoctor. Its not costing a great deal to develop plus it would add exposure of windows users to the mac platform. I think the reason they don't do this is because they don't want to piss off Microsoft or compete with Firefox.

Dec 03, 05 - 10:57 am Comment from: nekogami13

How many of the Firefox users are Mac users also?

I use firefox, do not like Safari. Then again, didn't like Konqueror either-Safari's daddy.

Dec 03, 05 - 11:13 am Comment from: MacWrath

There is also the issue of enormous vulnerabilities present in Windows' iterations (especially older verdsions) via the browser in general that Apple would have to address. Possible black eye. I don't think it's worth it. And not much of a selling point to get people to switch as most people won't see much difference and usually stick with what came with their system.

Dec 03, 05 - 11:39 am Comment from: G Spank

this isn't baby steps. You have to remember, this is on a month by month basis. I'd say these are very significant numbers. I'd call this a full on walk.

Dec 03, 05 - 11:41 am Comment from: G Spank

My bet is that this Christmas quarter is gonna be a big one for switchers. I think Apple will break the 5% by the end of January.

Dec 03, 05 - 11:49 am Comment from: T Goulding

I Think a lot of people like myself are waiting for the new intel macs before upgrading. I think 2006 is gonna be a great year for apple.

Dec 03, 05 - 03:51 pm Comment from: Reed Dafyn Prnt

this is so nothing info - statistical error would erase any gleam of hope that you all think apple safari is moving up.

i bet some of you printed this data out and posted on a bulletin board some where...

Reed

This is just "one more thing". We all know the Mac is on a big upswing. All these figures do is further confirm it.

Dec 03, 05 - 05:34 pm Comment from: Really....

Dave H - Most macs bought are bought by mac owners replacing their old macs - number of totally NEW mac users is a tiny fraction.
Just from this info it shows an increase of 0.22% - that´s 1/5 of one percent.
Windows loses more users from PC people dying than to PC people buying a Mac.

Maybe the new mactels will help...but Apple computers don´t offer lots of access to the web and other programs that windows offers...unfortunately.

Dec 03, 05 - 06:03 pm Comment from: Tim Coughlin

"Apple computers don´t offer lots of access to the web"

Eh?

Dec 03, 05 - 06:20 pm Comment from: Shannon

Tim - when you use an Apple you can´t:
Use Skype Video
Plays lots of online games
and to quote a guy from another mdn thread
Google (where's their Earth product?),
Microsoft (no voice/video in MSN),
Yahoo (no voice)

Dec 03, 05 - 06:53 pm Comment from: T Goulding

I switched from windows a little over a year ago, and I was running back and forth from my MAC to my PC. Now I hardly use my PC. I have to agree there is a lot of things you can do on a PC that you can't on a MAC but that is slowly changing too.

As Apples share of the market rises, and it will, Skype, Google, and Yahoo will put more effort into thier MAC software.

Dec 03, 05 - 07:23 pm Comment from: Reginald W

My brother just bought an iMac G5, his first Mac and he has been enjoying it immensely. He was so frustrated with his Win XP box and having to rebuild it frequently.

I've just delivered to my sister an older iMac (400MHz, DVD) that currently has OS9.2.2 but with a bit more RAM would be able to run 10.2 or 10.3 if she wants it. She only surfs a bit, a little email and a few games. Apleworks is fine for the WP/SS stuff she needs. But, that is a couple more Mac users out there now. Still one brother who is a staunch PC guy. Oh well.

Dec 03, 05 - 08:03 pm Comment from: Afro 70's

Shannon has gone I heard, she's drifting out to sea . . .

Dec 04, 05 - 01:44 am Comment from: j

Long live Firefox. (Yay, open source.)

Dec 04, 05 - 06:09 am Comment from: Tom

Reginald W: You must not like your sister - giving her a mac with OS9 on it.
That piece of crap OS. I have a laptop with OS 9.2.2 on it and everyone once in awhile I turn it on and watch it crash, crash, crash, freeze, crash (trying to use Photoshop or other thing than email) just to remind myself that:
a) OSX is great
b) Apple can make crap.

------
To Shannon - I agree. Apple needs to do more. Apple seems to be building more walls with its technology instead of being compatible with others.

Dec 04, 05 - 06:13 am Comment from: iPodder

Shannon et al.: is that all? Boy I was worried. On Windows you can't video iChat in conference, or use Aperture, or GarageBand.

Skype: is Beta on Windows. Will be available on OS X as well.

On Macs there are alternatives. You can't use "this and that *program*", sure, but I can use "those others programs" to support the same feature.

The issue is not with the Mac or its OS. It is with third-party people willing to support it. Give it time and these limited support from some vendors will start to vanish. Only, do not expect to have those Mac-only applications (iDVD, Aperture, iMovie, etc) to come on Windows any time soon.

Concerning new users, Apple stores report as much as 50% in some location of customers stating it is their very first Mac buy.
Nowadays, even hinting at possible FUD about Apple gaining share is silly: out of planet Earth.

Concerning Windows switchers using immediately Safari? Really, are you kidding me? Switchers at first will use those apps that they were using on Windows, ie, in the case of browsers, Explorer, Firefox, or the like. Certainly not Safari. Judging new-users rate on OS X on the raise of Safari is... well, I am speechless. LOL.

Dec 04, 05 - 06:15 am Comment from: iPodder

Skype beta on Windows: of course the video capable version, 2.0

Dec 04, 05 - 06:19 am Comment from: Justfortherecord

Apple latest results on CPUs YoY increased sales:

World-wide increase: 49%
Europe increase: 67%

Indeed: just existing Mac users replacing their Macs. Absolutely. Wall Street must believe that as well|: no gain on market share, just old Mac users replacing their Macs. That is why AAPL is over $70 now.

Dec 04, 05 - 06:25 am Comment from: Really.... GET REAL

What are you smoking buddy? 0.22% gain? Mac owners replacing their old Macs? HUHAHAHAHAOEHAHAHEHAOHEHAHAHEHEHAHEHHA

Thanks for the good laugh. Where do you live Really...? must be far away from planet Earth.

Do yourself a favor: google for Apple financial reports and READ them before sputter nonsense here.

I am encircled by ex-Windows users asking me about their new Macs. Cannot go to places without seeing someone with a Mac. At work is simply phenomenal. Even MUGs, google for that, are seeing an increase of memberships.

0.22% Pfffffft

HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHOHOHHAEHAHHAHHOAHAH
Thanks again. Made my day. Seeing is believing: you must be blind really!

Dec 04, 05 - 06:30 am Comment from: Seahawk

Tom: Apple adopts Open Standards. Repeat after me: O-P-E-N.

Being compatible with Windows does not mean building technology walls around. Means not ENTERING the existing technology walls that Microsoft has built around itself to keep its customers entrapped in.

Break out free buddy: stop considering lack of Microsoft Windows compatibility a lack of openness. It is exactly the opposite.
Apple is compatible with everybody else not using proprietary Microsoft only technology.

Sure, the end result for the user might be the same, but have facts straight. Microsoft is incompatible with everything. You have to adopt their formats and protocols to be compatible. And then, all those NOT using Microsoft protocols and format CAN"T be compatible with you.

Dec 04, 05 - 06:32 am Comment from: Seahawk

Oh well, need more proof reading: "Being compatible with Windows" should read: "NOT being compatible with Windows"

Dec 04, 05 - 06:35 am Comment from: ThanksShannon

Shannon, thanks for your list. I was worried about lacking things when switching to the Mac. Your post is truly reassuring: going to an Apple Store today!

Dec 05, 05 - 10:53 am Comment from: jblovemac

The percentage of OSX users will always be xx% higher than sales, or market studies can show, how many people buy one copy, and use it on multiple computers I wonder?

Apr 03, 06 - 11:39 am Comment from: Chris

These statistics aren't very accurate. Linux has a larger market share then Mac. In the United States these numbers are more true. Mac's market share is largest in this arena. The English and German speaking (Don't ask me why German) crowds tend to visit certain places like goggle in larger numbers then other languages which would explain these numbers as well as other sites, so depending on how market share was determined could explain this. Mac has a very small OS user base outside of the United States. Linux has a larger world-wide user base. Linux on the desktop makes up about 6-7% and 3-4%. Most of the rest being Microsoft Windows line of OS. You can take a look at IDC & Garner reports (technology market researchers).
