Mac OS X Snow Leopard goes to number one on Amazon.com pre-order
Monday, August 03, 2009 - 10:40 AM EDT

"Apple has released its next operating system for pre-order in the States, just a couple of weeks after Microsoft did the same for its forthcoming OS," Amy-Mae Elliott reports for Pocket-lint.

"On Amazon.com, Snow Leopard is currently the number one best seller in the software category taking up both the first slot, for the $29 single, upgrade version of the OS and the second slot, for the $49, five-user, 'family pack,'" Elliott reports. "Windows 7 does not feature in the top ten."

Amazing the upswing now that we got that spy out of our board of directors' midst!

Aug 03, 09 - 10:44 am Comment from: anypats

Nice! Does Windows 7 even rank? People probably don't know what version they need till they spin the Vista Service Pack wheel. Big Vista! Big Vista!

Aug 03, 09 - 10:46 am Comment from: MidWest Mac

I could be wrong, but I'll bet that the Apple board of directors has to read the same sites we all frequent to learn about upcoming products.

Intimate details about OS X are probably not part of the discussions. We all saw Apple minus Steve during the 80's and most of the 90's. He and a handful of others are the only ones who have a full picture of product development at Apple.

According to Amazon's UK site if you look at Snow Leopard

What Do Customers Ultimately Buy After Viewing This Item?
51% buy Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium
21% buy Microsoft Windows 7 Professional

Here's a better deal, directly from Apple, if you bought a new Mac after June 8, 2009. $9.95.

Glad to see Apple still playing the Anticipation Game.

Windows 7 doesn't rank as there is no reason to pre-order it since M$ is currently giving it away for free until next year.

That is due to the search input. Most people put in the search area "Operating System or OS" which puts Apple's OSX at the top of the search. You have to put in "Microsoft Windows" to have it come up correctly. So, it isn't any news here other than the Brits are having a difficult time remembering what Microsoft calls its OS.

Same seem to happen on the .com site as well so it's not just Brits then

What about all us G5 users?

Sniffle :-(

Aug 03, 09 - 11:42 am Comment from: HughB

I just checked Amazon and it says that 80% buy Win 7 Premium and 20% buy Win 7 Ultimate after viewing Snow Leopard. That is 100%. So nobody is buying Snow Leopard? How does that make it the number one seller then? WTF?

I have 10.5 Leopard on my Core 2 Duo iMac but I'm still using iLife 06. So I do qualify for the $29 upgrade but apple hasn't talked about any bundle prices of iLife & iWork for those who qualify for the $29 upgrade as I do. And I want to update to the New iLife 09.

Do I have to by the Full Box Set or What??

Aug 03, 09 - 11:50 am Comment from: Geo B

@Eddy -

Buy a new Mac in October and get Snow Leopard free wink

Apple moves on. If the G5 you have works, it works with Leopard. We are giving one of ours to the in-laws - it will be a big improvement over their G3/G4 systems.

@Mike Cain:

Those Amazon numbers are the result of curious Windows drones staring longingly at the OS X option before knuckling under and buying more Windows crap like good little sheep.

Aug 03, 09 - 12:16 pm Comment from: alansky

Here's a question:

How much will Snow Leopard cost users who are upgrading from Tiger?

Aug 03, 09 - 12:23 pm Comment from: solid

@alansky: You can't get to snow leopard without going through leopard first. So it will cost you whatever the going rate for leopard is plus $29 USD.

Aug 03, 09 - 12:38 pm Comment from: Lilochris

Another thing, what about this $29 upgrade?? Is this just going to be an upgrade CD that just installs a series of extensive updates to the existing 10.5 Leopard installed on your Mac or Can one do a clean install by Whipping out your Mac and doing a clean install Straight from that Upgrade CD without installing 10.5 Leopard First.????????

It sounds to me you need to have Leopard installed in order to use the Upgrade CD. I don't know but I think I may end up getting the Box Set which gets me a full version, iLife, & iWork. I just hope I can still install iMovie 06 HD as I just Read iMovie 09 which may have many new features, still doesn't compare to the power of iMovie 06 HD.

Aug 03, 09 - 12:41 pm Comment from: GRANDxADMIRAL

Does snow leopard come with the most recent iLife?

Aug 03, 09 - 12:42 pm Comment from: silverhawk

I never upgraded my MBP to Leopard. 10.4 is rock solid, stable and everything is good with it. Thinking of upgrading to Snow Leopard.

Aug 03, 09 - 01:34 pm Comment from: John B

The way the upgrades are packaged is not good for me. I have two computers with Leopard and a laptop with Tiger. So it looks like my only option is the most expensive of the packages. That kinda sucks.

Aug 03, 09 - 01:50 pm Comment from: Sarasota

Lilochris - Snow Leopard will be Intel only, so it will be an all new version, not just an update.

Aug 03, 09 - 02:16 pm Comment from: What about us?!?!

@ What about all us G5 users?

Really! I tried to get airbags but in my Model T Ford and the Ford dealers I took it too just laughed at me!

@Sarasota

I'm not a novice when it comes to Macs. I've been aware since Leopard came out that it may be the Last OS for PPC Mac which I have 2 of. I have a Late 06 iMac Core 2 Duo which has Leopard 10.5.7 on it. My Question is not about compatibility, But whether if it will be an Upgrade CD or a Full OS Install.

Apple did this with Tiger back then. When I got my 1st Mac Mini in Early 05, it had Panther 10.3.7 but since apple shipped it in April because it was backordered since Feb 05, it qualified for the Up-To-Date program which gave qualified users an Upgrade CD of Tiger 10.4 for like $9.95 or $19.95. But that Upgrade CD would only work if you had Panther Installed on the Machine. It Would not work if you wiped out your Mac to Make a Clean Install.

That is what I'm Asking. If Apple will be doing the Same thing with this $29 Snow Leopard Update.

Aug 03, 09 - 02:41 pm Comment from: ken1w

I don't understand this particular "pre-order" offer. $29 is the regular price. It's not like Apple (or Amazon) is going to have a shortage of Snow Leopard packages at launch time.

With previous releases, when the regular price was $129 and Amazon's pre-order price was $109, that made sense. You saved money, plus free shipping and no sales tax for most people.

I'm going to get in line at the local Apple Store and enjoy the festivities on launch day. Last time, I got a Leopard T-shirt.

Aug 03, 09 - 05:53 pm Comment from: db

Jeez are we backward up here... Snow Leopard isn't even *listed* on Amazon.ca. :(

And when I go to Amazon.com, I get Snow Leopard featured on the Software page, while here it's still Vista, Vista, Vista!

Although, when you look at Amazon.ca compared to its US counterpart, we find it rather pitiful and embarrassing. We barely have *anything* to buy compared to you guys. <sighs>

Aug 03, 09 - 06:24 pm Comment from: Another IT Guy...

"Windows 7 doesn't rank as there is no reason to pre-order it since M$ is currently giving it away for free until next year."

Well, there's that, and the fact that M$ was already selling pre-order copies of W7 for a limited time at half price, and they were number one (and two...Pro version) at places like Amazon, and doing well at Newegg, BestBuy, et al.

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13860_3-10274976-56.html

Still, I expect Apple to have a lot more traction with SL since M$'s special pricing was only good until 11 July and lots of places sold out of the upgrade packs before the end of the promotion. Not the tack I would have taken, but that's me.

Plus, when you go into the Software section of Amazon, the SL ad just about falls out of your monitor onto your keyboard. That's good placement.
