Report: Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.7 due ‘within a matter of days’

“An update to Apple Computer’s Mac OS X Tiger operating system due within a matter of days will deliver audio enhancements for several of the company’s applications,” Prince McLean reports for AppleInsider.

“Specifically, people who claim to have tested the latest pre-release builds of Mac OS X 10.4.7 say the update will offer fixes for audio playback in iTunes, Final Cut Pro, Soundtrack and QuickTime. It will also improve Bluetooth file transfers, mobile phone synching and mouse pairings, these people have said,” McLean reports.

“According to testers, the company recently completed the documentation for Mac OS X 10.4.7, suggesting a release within days,” McLean reports.

  1. hopely it will fix macbook heating problem. it should be included firmware inside mac os x 10.4.7. it also needs to improve itunes volume issue on macbook. if you want to hear music with macbook, you should crank volume up. but it’s still not enough.

  2. And then we will find out what “other” security issues are wrong with Mac OS X.

So far the MetaData file exploit has not been fixed.

You can test to see if your machine is vunerable by visiting this site.

    http://secunia.com/advisories/18963/

The best thing to do is prevent this from happening is to turn off “open safe files” in Safari and take your Terminal application and place it in a new folder and set the permissions to “no access”.

Also you should install Little Snitch and delete all the default settings to find out all the attempts to contact the internet. Then carefully allow only certain processes and apps to do so on a “ask first” basis.

As always always keep a couple of clones of your boot drive on external drives, visit Carbon Copy Cloner forums for details how to clone correctly before! applying the new OS X update!!!

You dont’ know what this update will break, so it’s best to clone first!!

  3. Mobile phones?! Good deal: my Treo 650 can’t seem to find my laptop to synch with it, which is _really_ annoying. I have a friend with the same phone and laptop, but she never installed 10.4.6 and can synch properly. Hopefully this update will solve my troubles!

  4. Also, you should never operate your computer with the shades up.

If your wife or child enters the room without authorization while you are on the computer, beat or verbally chastise them, and make them wear sackcloth for several days as penance.

When not in use, keep your computer lock within a vault in a subterranean concrete bunker.

In truth, people who are serious about security never actually turn their computers on at all. Abstinence is the best policy.

  5. mudflapper, Carlo seems to have made five errors in that short post – none would be solved by a dictionary! Three were capitalization errors – maybe he’s emulating ee cummings? Not a terrible choice, if you can support that eccentricity. The other two were contractions improperly made – have you ANY idea how many people can’t figure the difference between your and you’re, much less its and it’s?

    Get over it, OK?

I totally agree that it sucks that they haven’t fixed the MetaData file exploit, but you would have to be a retard to get a “virus” that way. Most of the time (like in the test case) it says that its a .mov file, but when u download it in safari it says that it might contain a application. Then you actually have to double-click to open it. If you have it set up right it will ask you for your admin name and password. You would have to be a retard to think you have to enter your user name and password just to view a JPEG or a MOV or something like that.

And the test file wasn’t done very well because they should have made the icon of the file different to better show that it can be exploited rather than have it the Terminal file icon. You would have to be a rather dumb programmer to create the first ever real Mac OS X virus, using MetaData file exploits, and then not change the icon from a terminal icon to say a real .mov icon in this case.

    Just my 2 cents

Not quite accurate — using the 417.9.3 version of Safari, running under 10.4.6 on a G3 iBook, running as an Administrator account (but NOT root), upon left/straight-clicking upon test URL (do not right-click or control-click), Safari flashes up the following dialog box:

“Secunia.mov may contain an application. The safety of this file cannot be determined. Are you sure you want to download “Secunia.mov?”” — two button choices — “Cancel” and “Download”

Selecting the “Download” button downloads the Secunia.mov file to the Mac hard disk. Double-clicking on this file causes the Terminal application to launch, which runs the “Secunia.mov” shell script, which then launches the Calculator. At NO time are you offered the opportunity to enter the Admin password.

    Niffy

  8. Niff, running as an admin account in itself is a security risk. Running your day to day operations as a standard user will prevent you or others from causing serious harm to your computer.

in my case i could say it’s a matter of style when in actuality it’s just sheer laziness. i’m just too damn lazy to move my pinkie fingers over.

and ee cummings used both upper and lower case letters in his stories and poetry.
    just not in his name.

  10. “I was hoping ‘audio fixes’ meant fixes for the random sound balance skewing…” Me too! Presuming that this issue remains unresolved in 10.4.7, there is an applescript that sort of fixes the problem. It can be found at the following url:

Also, I hope that Apple re-enables midi batch conversion capabilities in iTunes. I have some really cool sounding midis that I want to make into MP3s. And before some of you trounce on me by saying that midis are just data files making it impossible to convert them to MP3 etc., previous versions of iTunes have converted midis to MP3s for me without fail.
