.Mac upgrade coming tomorrow?
Monday, August 06, 2007 - 02:19 PM EST

Apple's .Mac website currently states:

Due to scheduled maintenance, .Mac members might be intermittently unable to access some .Mac services from 10am to 12pm PDT on 08/07/2007. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Apple's media event is scheduled to begin at 10am PDT on 08/07/2007.

.Mac's message to users here.

[Thanks to MacDailyNews Readers "Geoff" and "Phil" for the heads up.]

As MacRumors mentions, Steve Jobs had hinted that .Mac would see a refresh in the near future during a recent interview with Walt Mossberg at D:All Things Digital:

Walt: .Mac... you guys didn't really develop it.
Steve: I couldn't agree more, and we'll make up for lost time in the near future.

bought a 3ghz mac pro. Apple tried to upsell me dot mac. I said no way. There is nothing compelling about it yet. It desperately needs an overhaul to justify purchasing such a service.

Aug 06, 07 - 01:33 pm Comment from: sam

wow. that pretty much explains everything

Aug 06, 07 - 01:33 pm Comment from: Sunlokyee

I could use more online storage with .mac

Aug 06, 07 - 01:36 pm Comment from: Georgy Porgy

What if it were free and with a major overhaul? Just a thought!

Aug 06, 07 - 01:39 pm Comment from: R

I use it constantly and love iot, but it should be free to Mac users-- another added value.

Aug 06, 07 - 01:42 pm Comment from: macca

they'd better do something, or i'm ditching .mac when my subscription expires. $100/pa is too much for email and a few other services nobody uses.

Aug 06, 07 - 01:42 pm Comment from: Rob

the only thing that bothers me is price, I think $29.95/yr is reasonable, $99 is not

Aug 06, 07 - 01:42 pm Comment from: Jim - TIV

This is going to help me decide if I will renew at the end of the month.

Aug 06, 07 - 01:45 pm Comment from: iJavaJoe

One feature I'd like to see: If a .Mac user could make a database (FMP? or a new product) that could be linked to your web site. It would make dynamic web pages available to .Mac users.

Aug 06, 07 - 01:45 pm Comment from: Wrong Again

Guess me and other people that don't blink at the iPhone price don't mind $99 for convenience.

Show me one service ONE service, not an amalgam of different PC compatible crud, that offers the ease of .Mac.

Aug 06, 07 - 01:46 pm Comment from: vincas

maybe more integrated with an also to be announced new iLife suite.... ?

Aug 06, 07 - 01:46 pm Comment from: Rob

God knows it needs an upgrade. I finally let my subscription lapse after 4 years back in May because it just isn't a good value any more. If it gets a significant upgrade tomorrow I'll seriously reconsider re-subscribing again though.

Aug 06, 07 - 01:59 pm Comment from: Skabeetle

iLife Update? Please?? Is it possible that Leopard will arrive without an update to iLife? I never thought it would happen.

$99/yr COULD be reasonable if they gave us something... say, domain hosting. I'd be happy to pay $99 if they'd host my domain, boost storage and give us a few extra perks.

Aug 06, 07 - 02:39 pm Comment from: michael

It does have web hosting, if you want to use homepage.mac.com or if you use iWeb. It does actually also allow straight HTML, although it's not as elegant about it. And yes, it could use more space.

MW: should. My sentiments exactly.

apologies for misposting this in the next article thread...

Actually, a new price point (say, free) on dotmac could be the thing that was referenced as a potential revenue hit by the CFO...he said "product transition" I think...

says the person who probably pays $4.50 a day for lattes at Starbucks.

I'd be happy if the download speed was up to par with other sites.. it's very SLOW.

iSync is still not perfect, and causes problems at times.

Bring on Mobile Me™ with over-the-air iPhone integration!

Aug 06, 07 - 04:54 pm Comment from: Anthony

It's time for .Mac to add some things that are quite compelling.

It started as an innovative service and has significantly stalled. I like it because of it's great iWeb integration. For someone like me who is not fully aware of HTML/developing/hosting websites.

I think it's a gret product, but should develop off of it's platform. And add MUCH more storage. The fact that AOL & gmail give more away for FREE is appalling.

No doubt... Wah, wah, wah, $8.25/month is too much.

Aug 06, 07 - 08:53 pm Comment from: JD

The money isn't too much, the value proposition just isn't good enough. Which is a shame because I liked the service, it's just overpriced for what it is.

Aug 07, 07 - 12:16 am Comment from: b

I hope they up grade the speed of the servers. My page loads so slow!

Aug 07, 07 - 01:50 am Comment from: Brau

For me, .Mac is well worth the price simply because of the synching features that allows me to have all my mail, addresses, bookmarks and iCal events updated on all my Macs. If Apple adds more features it will only become more appealing.

Aug 07, 07 - 07:03 am Comment from: vtguy

I ditched it last May because I could do everything it offered far cheaper elsewhere. In addition, the lack of domain hosting was the final breaking point. The only thing I couldn't do elsewhere was the syncing but even when I considered that, it was only of value to me once in a while. I simply could no longer justify the expense.

Aug 07, 07 - 12:57 pm Comment from: Wrong Again

People keep saying it's not a value for what you get, but can't spell out where you can get something similar that's as integrated with the OSX experience as .Mac is for less.

There are free services out there, but you get what you pay for.

MDN Magic Word - Bring

I'd love for someone to "bring" some serious competition against .Mac, but it just ain't happening.

Aug 08, 07 - 10:29 pm Comment from: Mike from Canmore

I think that it is retarded that the Canadian .Mac is $139CAD and in the US it is $99. The exchange is about 1.05CAD to 1USD so really it shouldnt be more than $110CAD.
