.Mac upgrade coming tomorrow?

Apple’s .Mac website currently states:

Due to scheduled maintenance, .Mac members might be intermittently unable to access some .Mac services from 10am to 12pm PDT on 08/07/2007. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Apple’s media event is scheduled to begin at 10am PDT on 08/07/2007.

.Mac’s message to users here.

[Thanks to MacDailyNews Readers “Geoff” and “Phil” for the heads up.]

As MacRumors mentions, Steve Jobs had hinted that .Mac would see a refresh in the near future during a recent interview with Walt Mossberg at D:All Things Digital:

Walt: .Mac… you guys didn’t really develop it.
Steve: I couldn’t agree more, and we’ll make up for lost time in the near future.

  1. bought a 3ghz mac pro. Apple tried to upsell me dot mac. I said no way. There is nothing compelling about it yet. It desperately needs an overhaul to justify purchasing such a service.

  2. Guess me and other people that don’t blink at the iPhone price don’t mind $99 for convenience.

Show me one service ONE service, not an amalgam of different PC compatible crud, that offers the ease of .Mac.

  3. God knows it needs an upgrade. I finally let my subscription lapse after 4 years back in May because it just isn’t a good value any more. If it gets a significant upgrade tomorrow I’ll seriously reconsider re-subscribing again though.

  4. Time to start Apple-Bingo

    My three columns:

    B:
    iMac (brushed Al)
    iPhone SDK
    New MacMini Design

    I:
    Leopard Released early (or late)
    New .Mac service
    ?TV Upgrade

    N:
    iWork Upgrade
    Free Webhoasting
    iLife Upgrade

  5. $99/yr COULD be reasonable if they gave us something… say, domain hosting. I’d be happy to pay $99 if they’d host my domain, boost storage and give us a few extra perks.

  6. It does have web hosting, if you want to use homepage.mac.com or if you use iWeb. It does actually also allow straight HTML, although it’s not as elegant about it. And yes, it could use more space.

    MW: should. My sentiments exactly.

  7. apologies for misposting this in the next article thread…

Actually, a new price point (say, free) on dotmac could be the thing that was referenced as a potential revenue hit by the CFO…he said “product transition” I think…

  8. “they’d better do something, or i’m ditching .mac when my subscription expires. $100/pa is too much for email and a few other services nobody uses.”

says the person who probably pays $4.50 a day for lattes at Starbucks.

  9. It’s time for .Mac to add some things that are quite compelling.

It started as an innovative service and has significantly stalled. I like it because of it’s great iWeb integration. For someone like me who is not fully aware of HTML/developing/hosting websites.

I think it’s a gret product, but should develop off of it’s platform. And add MUCH more storage. The fact that AOL & gmail give more away for FREE is appalling.

  10. For me, .Mac is well worth the price simply because of the synching features that allows me to have all my mail, addresses, bookmarks and iCal events updated on all my Macs. If Apple adds more features it will only become more appealing.
