Mac use explodes at University of Virginia; 37.5% of first-year students are Mac users
Tuesday, May 26, 2009 - 12:16 PM EDT

The University of Virgina collects and compiles information about students' computer use. The information has been collected over the past decade by student employees of ITC, known as Student Consultants (SCs) and formerly, Computing Advisors (CAs), a group of first-year students hired to advise and assist their peers with computing. The data is based on SC and CA surveys of first-year residence halls each fall.

One graph in particular caught our eye:

Wasn't this reported on at the beginning of the school year?

May 26, 09 - 12:39 pm Comment from: Jubei

@Cubert

Maybe, but it doesn't hurt to repeat the message. Just in case that Microsoft brainwashing over the airwaves might possibly work. grin

So next year it's all cheap netbooks.

Wait, these are U of V students.

So next year it's all cheap Dell netbooks.

"We can't wait for next year's graph."

Presumably, it will arrive in September.

More fascinating graphs there. Some 82% of first-year students have an iPod or an iPhone (18% iPhone, 64% iPod). In other words, four out of five freshmen on campus can be seen wearing white earbuds!

The trends seem unstoppable, and there is no reason to believe they aren't the same at other major universities.

Looks like 50/50 by 2010...

It's gonna look like the Ichthys very soon.

May 26, 09 - 01:52 pm Comment from: Dallas

Hey! What about the 8 "other" OS users? Why aren't they listed on the graph. Sheesh. This site is so biased.

May 26, 09 - 01:57 pm Comment from: Sir Gill Bates

"This site is so biased."

This site has never claimed to be unbiased as far as I know.

As a UVa Student, I gotta say, they are everywhere. I'll be in my 4th year this upcoming year and the one thing that's interesting to see is how many students' PCs crapped out on them before they graduated and students like myself persuaded them into getting Macs. Now they love it and will never go back.

A real surprising trend is how many students in the Commerce School now have them. Especially after the unibodies came out, even my fellow business students are happy mac converts now.

May 26, 09 - 02:59 pm Comment from: Hm...

@ Dallas,

The graph was made by UVA, so the bias isn't from MDN (this time).

The real story is how many Windows users are still using Microsoft Windows after 4 or 5 years of disappointment. When this years graduates leave, how many switched to Mac and that is the percentage that will request Macs at work.

In 5 years, there will be more Mac users graduating than Windows users. How long can you keep saying that the Windows computer eat your homework before the professor tell you to just get a Mac or fail the class!

Long gone are the days where I had a hard time buying a Mac at McGill University. That was back in 1994, when I bought my first Powerbook (180c). That beast cost me over 3400$ (and that's *before* taxes) with the extras, and that was the educational price.

Back then, the Macs were relegated to the back corner of the university's computer store, and were special ordered since they didn't keep any in stock.. I haven't been back since I graduated in '98, but I'd be willing to bet they're now front and centre!

Don't forget about my college! Virginia Commonwealth University. Not too far away from UVA. Mac love everywhere!

Whew! When I first glanced at that headline, I thought a Mac had exploded at the University of Virginia.

May 26, 09 - 05:04 pm Comment from: Sir Gill Bates

"Whew! When I first glanced at that headline, I thought a Mac had exploded at the University of Virginia."

That's nothing! When I first saw it I thought it said that a guy named Mac had exploded in the University Vagina! Damn
this dyslexia!

But I gotta admit, I was pretty excited for a few seconds.

May 26, 09 - 05:12 pm Comment from: Missy Pants

Hmmm, so this year, 62.5 percent of the first-year students at the University of Virginia are "not cool enough".

May 26, 09 - 05:14 pm Comment from: Missy Pants

Wow, just re-read the first sentence in the story, and found out there's a "University of Virgina"! smile

May 26, 09 - 05:34 pm Comment from: Sir Gill Bates

"University of Virgina"!

Good catch. And funny too.

I strictly recommend not to wait until you get big sum of cash to buy different goods! You should take the mortgage loans or just credit loan and feel yourself comfortable

To compose the masters thesis about this topic wasn’t simple but you deal with that. If every single writer was as good as you are, all scholars will ne'er have got any problems with the dissertation writing service.
