MacBook Air, Apple TV, iTunes Movies Rentals, Time Capsule could have long-range effects on tech
Saturday, January 19, 2008 - 10:38 AM EDT

Apple CEO Steve Jobs' announcements this week "set off some tremors that could have long-range effects on the technology landscape," Ellen Lee reports for The San Francisco Chronicle.

"Over the years, Jobs has developed a reputation for identifying trends and jumping on them at just the right time. The iPod and iTunes Music Store weren't the first to tackle the digital music industry, but they managed to turn the market on its ear. Similarly, the iPhone wasn't the first smart phone, but it is ushering in an era of Internet-enabled mobile devices," Lee reports.

"That begs the question for Apple's newest products, the super-slim, lightweight MacBook Air, its revamped Apple TV and online movie-rental service, and the Time Capsule, a backup device," Lee reports. "Could they have a larger influence than initially thought?"

"Jobs announced a new Apple TV, which no longer requires a computer, and introduced the iTunes movie-rental service, teaming with not just some but all the key film studios, and offering high-definition films for the first time," Lee reports. "Pundits believe that this go-around may have the desired effect, shifting the movie industry the same way Apple did the music industry, and enabling people to access films through the Internet instead of relying on DVDs or cable or satellite television... Its deal with Twentieth Century Fox also could raise awareness and build a steppingstone toward digital film copies. New DVDs released by Fox will allow customers to make one digital copy to their iTunes library."

"Time Capsule, which costs between $299 and $499 and stores up to 1 terabyte, fills a critical hole by supplying a place to back up growing collections of digital data automatically and wirelessly," Lee reports. "Once turned on, users don't have to remember to connect the Time Capsule to the computer to update it because the backup is done automatically."

Apple's new ultra-thin MacBook Air "could make over the notebook industry in other ways as well. Just as few computers come with floppy disk drives today, the MacBook Air does not come with an optical disc drive for CDs or DVDs," Lee reports. "Instead, consumers are backing up their data wirelessly, downloading movies and music from the Internet and transferring them to their cars using their iPod, Apple CEO Steve Jobs said. And to install software, the MacBook Air's Remote Disc feature can wirelessly connect to another computer with an optical drive and borrow from it."

I'm wondering if this will eventually mean that Apple will attempt to make or integrate a digital software store? I've been reading and reading, but I can't find anyone talking about this. Is it just me?

Jan 19, 08 - 12:00 pm Comment from: auren

Never, ever, ever, ever underestimate Steve Jobs, period, full stop.

Jan 19, 08 - 12:15 pm Comment from: Jamie

Well I'm pretty pissed that Time Machine still doesn't work with USB HD's attached to AEBS.

I've got a very expensive setup that Apple advised me to get "in preparation for Leopard" which now doesn't work.

@ @ Questioning

I think the 1st post means a store within iTunes that allows you to download the software for installation.

-rather than order the physical, shiny, plastic disc from the Apple store.

The other side of the coin is also on today's MDN page...

"Time Warner tests multi-tiered pricing structure based on broadband usage"

If the ISP's start charging big-bucks for big-bandwidth, it could take a big-bite out of Apple's plans for a wireless download utopia.

well maybe itunes will after the iphone sdk

Jan 19, 08 - 12:59 pm Comment from: john

A lawsuit is pending on this bandwidth limits. Hopefully the law will prevail for us consumers for a change and stop this tiered crap before it becomes standard.

Hey Jamie,

I use TM to back up my desktop and powerbook to the same back up drive. The drive is connected to the desktop and sharing is on. The desktop is not set to sleep.

All I did was mount the back up drive on the PB, choose it as the backup drive for TM and that's it.

It works perfectly. Backs up wirelessly when the PB is awake.

I'm sure you can do something similar with your set up.

Movie Rentals is a rip off. 24 hours to want a movie !@##@. I assume you can't rewind or watch it twice in the 24 hours. Steve Jobs is becoming worst than Bill Gates.

Jan 19, 08 - 01:26 pm Comment from: standardmess

I wonder if there will be an OS update before the Time Capsule ships. Perhaps this update will re-enable wireless back ups in general?

Jan 19, 08 - 01:30 pm Comment from: @idon't

You can watch the movie rental as many times as you like, within that 24 hour window.

Jan 19, 08 - 01:31 pm Comment from: tmsruge

iDon't. you can watch it as many times as you want within that 24 hour period. Try it before going and spouting shit you don't know anything about. And assuming just made an ass out of you...

>Well I'm pretty pissed that Time Machine still doesn't work with USB HD's attached to AEBS.

I think there's an easy fix for this. I don't know the specifics, but my IT guy searched via Google and found a couple lines of UNIX code that instruct Leopard to connect with a NAS for our TM backups. Granted, this was with OS-X Server, but I *think* it's the same for all.

There's also this which might work for you: iTimeMachine. http://www.xiotios.com/itimemachine.html

You can watch the movie as many times as you want within the 24 hour window. How is this different from Video on Demand from the cable company?

Jan 19, 08 - 01:35 pm Comment from: @ IDon't

You can watch the movie as many times as you want within that 24 hour period. Why don't you do some research before you make yourself look like a high-maintenance a$$-hole.

Jan 19, 08 - 01:35 pm Comment from: Cubert

The MacBook Air is Apple's testing ground for their tablet - the size and form factor, the redesigned processor, the slow incremental multitouch implementation, the wireless theme.

It's all coming together. Excellent!

Jan 19, 08 - 01:58 pm Comment from: Your Mom

Jobs said they went through 100 designs in over two years to arrive at the current MacBook Air. I bet some of those castaway designs were great, but maybe too thick for the "world's thinest notebook". In other words, expect the new MacBook, and MacBook Pro by mid-Summer with the new Roswell look.

Rock on Steve!

Jan 19, 08 - 02:10 pm Comment from: eon

I think Apple should look into the over-the-air data concept that iBurst was attempting. if there are going to be locks placed on American broadband which is a fraction of the speed that some Asian countries enjoy, then there will be consequences to the greedy ISP's that are trying to squelch it's usage. This will probably be a boost to Verizon and their FIOS system as people move away from Time Warner's limitations. I see a big backlash coming to TW if they do as they are planning.

Jan 19, 08 - 02:15 pm Comment from: Zune Tang®

We all know Apple has never created a product that had long-range effects on tech. Name one, and if you can, name one they didn't steal or buy and repackage as their own. For revolutionary innovations in technology you need to go no further than Dell and Microsoft. From Windows Vista to the Ditty MP3 player we've witnessed a reshaping of technology that has changed our lives forever. A grateful planet awaits the next exciting, game-changing wizardry from both Dell and Microsoft. Buh-bye, Apple.

Your potential. Our passion.™

I second the above, you would think Jobs would fix what we have bought from him before moving on to something new, Firmware update please Steve.....Are you listening ?????

@ Zune Tang

"revolutionary innovations in technology...Microsoft...Windows Vista"

Oh, so it does not have to work very well, sell very well or gain in market share to achieve your definition of revolutionary innovation.

Heck, even Apple has had some pretty cool flops over the years that would outshine Visterd!

It is the studios not Apple that is limiting you to 24 hours of viewing.

Don't blame Apple. Blame the studios.

(you stupid idiot)

ok, I shouldn't of said that, but I am tired of people throwing mud at apple. The RIAA is the devil and the movie studios want to grow up and be just like them.

Jan 19, 08 - 03:30 pm Comment from: nekogami13

Got an interesting idea from BOL-
The Game industry continues to have record profits, all the while being pirated like crazy. They attempt to fight piracy without suing their customers or a lot of the craziness being thrown around by the RIAA.

Ubiquitous wireless internet access needs to present before devices like the air book(shuddering as I type that dorky name) make perfect sense.
Maybe Jobs knows WiMax is coming?

Enter: Google, and the analog spectrum. I really hope they win.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Why make a statement when you haven't even checked out any of the info regarding a product. This is the definition of an asshole. Actually you can watch the movie as many times as you want within a 24 hour period. How many times do you actually watch a movie from a rental store before you have to drive it back to the store by the deadline...do you have a job? Apple doesn't own the content. Do you live in a vacuum? I'm pretty sure they had to negotiate those terms with the movie studios.

Jan 19, 08 - 06:30 pm Comment from: Mr. Reeee

Why is a movie rental download any more of a ripoff than Pay-Per-View? The prices are about the same, right?

There's really a niche for everything. Download Rental. Physical (Netflix) Rental. Pay-Per-View. A home media disk library.

Pick and choose what works best.

Apple seems to be covering a certain segment and preparing for future moves as well.

So, what's to complain about?

Jan 19, 08 - 06:42 pm Comment from: Falkirk

The purpose of the article is to point out how Apple (Steve Jobs) starts trends by matching technology with market desires. The trends that Apple "forecast" in this years key note were:

1) Apple TV will allow direct to set top box digital downloads for one's TV;
2) The combination of Time Machine and Time Capsule will allow for seamless, hands-off automatic backups of computer data;
3) The MacBook Air forecasts the end of reliance upon optical disks for data transfer.

Looking at it that way instead of focusing on each product individually, I think that Apple will be right on all three fronts. Digital downloads are the wave of the future in music and will now become the wave of the future in video. Hands-off backups are what we thought we should have had all along. And in a couple of years, disk drives will be gone, replaced by all wireless transfer devices.

@tmsruge

You idiot if you could read you would not make such a stupid comment to me. I bet if Steve dropped his pants you'd be the first in line to give him a BJ.

Jan 19, 08 - 06:49 pm Comment from: iDon't

iDO,
Thanks for the info. But what has 30 days got to do with it? I quickly read the iTunes on movie rentals and it confused me. Could be the vodka. I thought Apple was supposed to be simple.

Jan 19, 08 - 07:21 pm Comment from: silverhawk

Who can help me! I upgraded my Touch and got everything working. The Apple site for the Touch shows the game "Bejeweled" on the home screen. Yet it is not available at the iTunes store, at least for the Touch. Any ideas oh Mac brethren and sistren?

Jan 19, 08 - 07:57 pm Comment from: PG

Just search for Bejeweled iphone to find the link for the version that will work with your Touch. It is a web app for Safari and it works pretty well!!

Jan 20, 08 - 01:36 am Comment from: You're Nuts

And so is Ellen Lee.

The irrational fawning over Steve Jobs is an epidemic. Everything he said, introduced, announced, displayed, highlighted, hyped, and over-hyped is all - that means all of it - already being done, on the market now, and absolutely nothing about it is either new or a breakthrough, or even the slightest bit novel.

But, I admit, he is truly amazing that he can walk out there and suspend reality the way he does. Truly. Amazing.

I just talked to an apple wireless tech guy, and he said that usb/airport extreme backup is almost figured out...

steps...
1. Format HD on mac (Disk Utilities) using the partition tab instead of the erase tab
2. Choose 1 Partition and click options below, choose GUID Partition Table
3. Hook Hard Drive up to Airport Extreme and choose Hard Drive as Time Machine Backup
