MacBookAir domain names registered by Apple (1 Infinite Loop, Cupertino, CA)
Monday, January 14, 2008 - 11:56 AM EST

After reading "Apple to debut ‘MacBook Air’ on Tuesday?" MacDailyNews reader "mango" did a little research on "MacBook Air" and found that it's an Apple owned domain name.

The Whois domain name lookup won't list any info using macbookair.com or .net, but macbookair.org shows the address:

Admin Street1: 303 Second Street
Admin Street2: Suite 800N
Admin City: San Francisco
Admin State/Province: CA

And macbookair.us, macbookair.biz, and macbookair.info show the same address, but with additional information:

Billing Street1: 1 Infinite Loop
Billing Street2: Mail Stop 3-TM
Billing City: Cupertino
Billing State/Province: CA
Domain Registration Date: Fri Jan 11 22:49:59 GMT 2008

[Thanks to MacDailyNews Reader "mango" for the heads up.]

Not much to read into this, except perhaps Apple protecting some names against cybersquatters (or vandals).

Besides, by around this time tomorrow, we'll know everything.

Jan 14, 08 - 12:03 pm Comment from: Tempus Fugit

hmmmm.... time will tell.

Jan 14, 08 - 12:03 pm Comment from: deepdish

not sure about the name.

I bet Steve hates it when this stuff leaks out.

Or I wonder if he has mellowed a little?

Jan 14, 08 - 12:09 pm Comment from: Caesar

Stop this! When I'm trying to decide on the type of wash for tomorrow's Levis, I can't be distracted by these leaks.

Damn it. I decide. No one else. No one.

MDN: you are about to suffer an unexplainable outage. One more of these and you're toast.

Besides, the majority of my sheep in the queue on the street so they can't see what you are posting anyhow. Oh, that's wrong, they all have my phone and ARE reading the stuff from these leakers.

I'll get 'em all, though. Boom! There goes the AT&T;signal at Moscone and it won't be back until I'm ready and I'm not ready until I decide on which wash.

Jan 14, 08 - 12:09 pm Comment from: Ampar

It worked for Nike. I wonder if Michael Jordan will join Steve onstage?

Jan 14, 08 - 12:10 pm Comment from: Steve Jobs

You are all fired.

Jan 14, 08 - 12:10 pm Comment from: coolfactor

I'm surprised people have been getting so worked up the name of the product. I think it's fresh and clean.

Just think, they could name it the MacBook XC6754 like more competitor products.

Jan 14, 08 - 12:12 pm Comment from: namecheap.com

9.95 buys Apple a stupid name.

MacBook Air

Jan 14, 08 - 12:14 pm Comment from: G Spank

I like the name. Usually when a rumor leaks and various Mac fanboys can't stand the notion of it, it's true.

Jan 14, 08 - 12:16 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

"I bet Steve hates it when this stuff leaks out."

"isn't it funny how sometimes ships leak from the top?" -Steve Jobs

Jan 14, 08 - 12:16 pm Comment from: @coolfactor

why not (logo)AirBook and (logo)AirBookPro.

Curiosity is in the Air.

Jan 14, 08 - 12:18 pm Comment from: Hmmmm

Why did Apple buy the domain after the rumors of the macbook air started?

Fifty dollars to keep the hounds off the real scent?

We'll find out tomorrow.

Jan 14, 08 - 12:19 pm Comment from: theloniousMac

I was in a meeting once, with my boss at the time and some people who were creating this thing called a DVR. They were trying to settle on a name. The name they finally settled on (with urging from my boss) was TiVO. I thought, "Gee that's a dumb name." Doesn't even mean anything.

Jan 14, 08 - 12:20 pm Comment from: Dev Singh

Apples way of toying with us... Or maybe not ?

On another note; I´m off to make lasagna..

Jan 14, 08 - 12:25 pm Comment from: Thunk Different.

Way to go MacDailyNews, it readers, and ma' man Mango!

Apple Air has arrived...

Mmmmm, lasagna.

Jan 14, 08 - 12:28 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

Were any of you posting on Mac forums back when the iPod was introduced? Not only was the iPod itself panned as a useless toy, but the name was, if you read what fans were saying, the dumbest thing even devised using roman letters.
Whenever I saw stuff like that, I bought more stock.

Jan 14, 08 - 12:28 pm Comment from: TheConfuzed1

This doesn't necessarily mean anything, because Apple has purchased domain names in the past, without releasing a corresponding product.

For example, iPhone.com was owned by apple for something like ten years before they announced the iPhone, and I'm still waiting for Apple to announce their improvement on mammals! (hint--http://mammals.org)

Jan 14, 08 - 12:31 pm Comment from: RONALD MCDONALD

I want to see what Steve has to tell us.
If this is the big news. Lets hope there is more to all this.

Jan 14, 08 - 12:36 pm Comment from: madgunde

It's a new line of fragrances. You can give any old laptop that "new MacBook smell" with a couple squirts from a bottle of MacBook Air by Apple.

Jan 14, 08 - 12:37 pm Comment from: w8nc

Tomorrow - never comes until the next day.

Jan 14, 08 - 12:38 pm Comment from: Steve516

$9.95 also allows someone to buy it and register it with the Apple address... just to keep the rumors spinning LOL.

Jan 14, 08 - 12:46 pm Comment from: S Woz

Apple IS toying with US all. Letting all these RUMORS fly around in the AIR. Apple has PLANTED this and on the NET to teach us not to mess with the MEDIA. A lesson we refuse to learn.

Jan 14, 08 - 12:56 pm Comment from: theloniousMac

ChrissyOne is right.

It will work. It will grab the imaginations of the public and a year from now we won't remember when there wasn't a MacBook Air.

Could be worse. Could be the new Apple Zune with AirSquirt or something.

Jan 14, 08 - 12:58 pm Comment from: Jubei

LOL.. Isn't Mango a character played by Katen?? on Saturday Night Live?

Jan 14, 08 - 01:03 pm Comment from: Yeah C1 is right

But there still is danger in all this like a bunch of Mac Faithfuls loosing their imagination and following all this like Lemmings do.

Jan 14, 08 - 01:06 pm Comment from: ron

This won't be announced tomorrow in SF.

For you Intel iMac users out there. I put 4 rubber/plastic buttons under the corners of the base of my iMac. The cable from my keyboard now threads under the center of the base and tidies the whole set-up. No loss of stability. Cost, $1.98 plus tax.

Jan 14, 08 - 01:07 pm Comment from: Say Again

@Yeah C1 is right

Lemmings? Did you say lemmings? Get ready to be trashed and don't think compliments to C1 will make you immune.

Lemmings don't like to be called lemmings. Just watch.

Jan 14, 08 - 01:21 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

Never underestimate the power of the unimaginative.

Jan 14, 08 - 01:23 pm Comment from: Macaday

Here we go again... remember how everyone loved 'Powerbook'?

And remember how everyone thought the name 'MacBook' was doomed to failure?

wink

Jan 14, 08 - 01:32 pm Comment from: Ampar

"Never underestimate the power of the unimaginative."

Huh?

Jan 14, 08 - 01:34 pm Comment from: Careful, Ampar

You're playing with fire.

Jan 14, 08 - 01:35 pm Comment from: TheConfuzed1

I still think 'Powerbook' is a better name, but I also understand the reasoning behind the new name/image.

Also, I'm used to the new names now, so they don't sound as foreign.

Jan 14, 08 - 01:35 pm Comment from: Rob

This is so intense I will get drunk right now and wake up tomorrow @ 9am PST

Jan 14, 08 - 01:47 pm Comment from: mAc-warrior

This could just as easily be a diversion than the real thing. Even if Apple themselves bought the domain.

"Were any of you posting on Mac forums back when the iPod was introduced? Not only was the iPod itself panned as a useless toy, but the name was, if you read what fans were saying, the dumbest thing even devised using roman letters."

and OS X was a stupid name, and iMac, and all the other iApps, and it was stupid to change to intel, and to change to unix from system 9, and, and, and....

and meanwhile Apple is being viewed as a company to envy.

i agree C1, i bought more stock too!

Jan 14, 08 - 01:59 pm Comment from: CamilloMiller

The name and the address of the domain owner are protected by WhoIsGuard, You can't find infos like that with a simple lookup. Would be nice to understand how this guy found out that the domain is Apple's. Don't think that WhoIs Guard is gonna let people penetrate the security that easily, it's a very bad return for that company.

In fact this MacBook Air thing is just meant to polarize people's attention and emotivity. because Steve will mainly anounce that he's doing as Bill... Jive will be introduced as "Commander"...

Jan 14, 08 - 02:08 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

@ almux

I want you to stay after class and write that 50 times.

Jan 14, 08 - 02:51 pm Comment from: Dragnet

@Yeah C1 is right

Think this person means, MAC-FAN-BOYS would become Lemmings BY FOLLOWING all these silly rumors.

Jan 14, 08 - 03:05 pm Comment from: Ampar

Ironically, the story of lemming suicide is a Disney documentary myth.

"Claim: During the filming of the 1958 Disney nature documentary White Wilderness, the film crew induced lemmings into jumping off a cliff and into the sea in order to document their supposedly suicidal behavior.

Status: True.

Origins: Lemming suicide is fiction. Contrary to popular belief, lemmings do not periodically hurl themselves off of cliffs and into the sea."

Jan 14, 08 - 03:25 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

I've read that lemmings are in fact rather sensible creatures.

And what's more, they're irresistibly adorable.
