This is of interest to non-Americans as well.

Net neutrality is a HUGE issue. Looks like the Republicans want the internet to get owned by big businesses.

Jan 08, 08 - 11:02 am Comment from: Fred Mertz

G Spank,

The illusion of 'net neutrality'

When talking about an Internet future, it is good to remember the wisdom of Shakespeare's phrase, "what is past is prologue."

The astonishing growth of the Internet has been due to a "hands off" policy, with the marketplace and existing laws creating the parameters rather than rigid regulatory edicts whose adverse side-effects could well be severe. Let's hope lawmakers and policymakers keep that in mind.

The Republicans want everything owned by big business. Screw the middle class.

Jan 08, 08 - 11:03 am Comment from: Farlo

That was a waste of space. Six politicians spouting what they think is most politically expedient. They don't know enough about this stuff to know what they believe.

Jan 08, 08 - 11:03 am Comment from: TowerTone

No, G, the Democrats just want you to believe that. I guess you are going on the fact that McCain is against it? Since when did he speak for the majority of Republicans?

Jan 08, 08 - 11:16 am Comment from: Cubert

Avoiding this thread at all costs!!!

Jan 08, 08 - 11:18 am Comment from: TowerTone

LOL! Nice try, Cubert.

"Net neutrality is a HUGE issue. Looks like the Republicans want the internet to get owned by big businesses."

ummm, this is new?

how is this stand different from what the neo-cons what for everything?

and yes, to answer the McCain question, old school conservatives may see things differently, but lets deal with the reality that the GOP is now almost completely controlled by a mix of neo-cons and religious nut jobs. and they, as the man said, want big companies in charge telling you what to do.

reality sucks sometimes, but ignoring it won't change it.

Jan 08, 08 - 11:34 am Comment from: Conservative

Yes, of course. I hope Hilary get in and steals everything off of those rich people and hands it out to us bums, drug addicts, and minimum wage workers. And we will get FREE health Care, and FREE Housing, and FREE Food Stamps, and FREE This and FREE that......

Rich people owe us..... Make them PAY!!!

Jan 08, 08 - 11:35 am Comment from: Marian

Since when Giuliani is a major contender, to be placed in that analysis?

Jan 08, 08 - 11:42 am Comment from: k_shaw

I will vote for whoever bases their campaign on a nationwide shift from Windows to Mac.

Jobs for Prez.

Jan 08, 08 - 11:42 am Comment from: TowerTone

Uhhm, shen....oh never mind.

Jan 08, 08 - 11:44 am Comment from: Bob

...and lets not forget the DMCA..

"...the DMCA bill was brought to Congress by the Clinton Administration, not all Republicans voted for it, but most Democrats did vote for it because they took campaign contributions from the RIAA and MPAA like Clinton did."

Jan 08, 08 - 11:47 am Comment from: Tommy Boy

The GOoPers still have 6 viable candidates. I can't take the list seriously if it doesn't include Mike Huckleberry, Arthur Branch, and netroots champ Ron Paul.

Conservative: because it's my God(tm)-given RIGHT to earn a gazillion dollars per year instead of ONLY a bazillion dollars while millions of citizens are without basic healthcare!!! Boo hoo waa waa!!!

Liberal: because it's my randomly mutated right to swing by the lips from one government tit or another, basing the limits of my existence on how much I can convince the gub'ment to steal for me from those who work and produce.

Al Gore created the internet and global warming. I'm writing him in for President.

I think this reveals a lot about you that you associate minimum wage workers with bums and drug addicts.

And I imagine it must be so tough for you, to despise so many people you don't even know.

It's so cute when children think they can argue like adults but can't realize that they are using tired old cliches.

Jan 08, 08 - 02:47 pm Comment from: The Dude

Stop saying all republicans want big business to rule. You need to look at Ron Paul before you say that again... and I mean look for more than 10 seconds... actually listen to some of the debates on youtube of him. Like him, hate him... whatever... just get to know the candidate before you lump him in with the other Republicans... you may find a candidate that you like in the process too.

The Dude abides.

Jan 08, 08 - 03:06 pm Comment from: Mr. Peabody

@k-shaw,

You know, that's actually a good one, and when you stop and think about it, a serious one. MS has a desktop monopoly within the Fed, and security issues aside (not that that is easily done in the real world), the U.S. government becomes one of the largest customers of a single company. I'm not at all comfortable with my tax dollars being spent to uphold a singular manufacturer.

Jan 08, 08 - 03:40 pm Comment from: Babysitter

Thanks, Dude, for the clarification.

RON PAUL is awesome. Go to http://www.ronpaul2008.com, click on the Issues link and see what he says about your most important positions. RP is a REAL choice for president, not just more BS.

Jan 08, 08 - 03:40 pm Comment from: Chris

@The Dude,
Sorry, but Ron Paul is one man, not the Party. The Republican Party is as much to blame for where we are now as Bush is, and there is no way I'm voting for a member of that party.

Jan 08, 08 - 03:41 pm Comment from: Perry Fjellman

I'm pissed off that they didn't have Ron Paul on there. He's the guy who's going to win the election. I promise you that. And if he doesn't, there will be an American revolution of VIOLENT proportion, of which I'll be leading.

Jan 08, 08 - 03:44 pm Comment from: @Perry

I can't wait to kick your ass.

"I hope Hilary get in (sic) and steals everything off of those rich people and hands it out to us bums, drug addicts, and minimum wage workers." ~effwerd

If, by some miracle, she bests Obama, wins the primaries and goes on to become president and all you hope for here comes true, the money she "re-distributes" will naturally gravitate back into the hands of the motivated in very short order.

And by the way, Hillary is one of "those rich people".

Jan 08, 08 - 07:03 pm Comment from: OBill-Wan Kenobi

People get the government they deserve. The unfortunate part is that while the well-intentioned liberals are redistributing wealth they fail to recognize that they are enslaving their fellow Americans as tax payers. Why they can't reconcile the fact that voluntary philanthropy is far more charitable than forced philanthropy (i.e. taxation) is beyond me. But then again, maybe they're convinced that they will be beneficiaries of these entitlement programs some day and they're sure their neighbor hates them.

There's an oxymoron for you: "entitlement program". As if the recipients are actually entitled to it. No wonder our country is doomed.

Kiss our Federal Republic goodbye folks. We hardly knew ye...

Jan 08, 08 - 07:05 pm Comment from: kaboom

And by the way, Hillary is one of "those rich people".

Everyone in this forum who holds stock (esp. AAPL) are also among "those rich people".

the money she "re-distributes" will naturally gravitate back into the hands of the motivated in very short order.

Bring that up again when everyone's nice stock gains are being forcibly taken, er "redistributed". After all, it'll naturally gravitate back in very short order, right?

Wouldn't it just be redistributed all over again?

Jan 08, 08 - 10:21 pm Comment from: Guess Poser

People get the government that the corporates select, with $200 million requirement to launch a presidential candidate what else do you expect. The only exception is when politicians are so in touch with real people that they can generate support with mere hard work (thus avoiding bribes), Ron Paul is the sole example mentioned above. If he got close to being president he would be mysteriously assassinated or have a severe illness or have kiddie porn found on his computer.

And Ron Paul is republican? - not really, he's libertarian - not that many people these days know what that means. The spread in reality isn't defined by the usual left/right parameters portrayed by the right wing media it is better described by a circle. Libertarianism at the bottom, fascism (corporatism) at the top, socialism left, capitalism right. Draw it out for yourself. Either socialism or capitalism can lead to corporatism. Think Hitler's Germany, it is 'known as' socialist but was in fact corporatist.

BTW the neo-cons were all socialists/communists until they saw that the way to power was easier by taking business taking control of government rather than taking government taking control of business. Skeptical, I would be too but I researched the evidence, start with a search for 'rumsfeld strauss', follow the leads and make your own mind up.

You know how they say people who say "honestly" often are actually dishonest? - What do you think of people who say "freedom and democracy" all of the time?

Who do you trust to defend your freedom, politicians? - aren't they the lowest rated speakers of truth, even lower than journalists? Do it yourself, allow a few hours per week to do so. The price of freedom is eternal vigilance.

USA - fiefdom and demonery in the land of the fee and home of the knave.

Jan 09, 08 - 12:43 pm Comment from: ronpaul2008.com

I liken the Republican party to the greed and low-standards of a company like Microsoft.

However, a guy like Ron Paul is different.

Google Ron Paul. He's all over YouTube too.
