Mark Cuban: ‘Apple’s iPad going to be huge hit; Will change how kids grow up’
Wednesday, February 03, 2010 - 05:03 PM EDT

"I can’t wait to get my hands on the iPad. It’s going to be a huge hit," Mark Cuban writes for MSNBC.

"You can book it right now that it will be the product that kids of this generation grow up with and look back on with affection just like we did with the first video games. Video games changed how we grew up," Cuban writes. "The iPad will change how kids today grow up."

"Apple was brilliant in how they cultivated apps for the iPhone and iPod Touch. With so many apps for kids, any parent with young kids and either of these two devices will tell you that their kids use and love them," Cuban writes. "The iPad will take this to the next level. I recognize that it’s very expensive for most families right now. Hopefully that will change over time. If it does, you can bet every home with kids will have an iPad."

Cuban writes, "On the flipside, the minute these devices hit critical mass in families, the DVD market for kids, who watch the same movie over and over will end as we know it. Download Scooby-Doo one time and the need to hassle with all those DVDs for the kids at home or on trips becomes a distant memory. A relic of an older generation. That’s big."

More and more to come when Apple release the little beast!

Feb 03, 10 - 06:08 pm Comment from: Let's See

So iPad will produce a generation who grow up playing even more video games and watching Scooby-Doo. I'm not sure if that's the world Steve intended to change with this.

For a family with one desktop computer In their house an iPad will be a nice addition.

EVERYONE IN THE HOUSEHOLD WILL HAVE THEIR OWN iPad !!

Sorry about that

Feb 03, 10 - 06:24 pm Comment from: iMaki

This will be a product that will be dropped a lot! At 1.5 lbs, expect lots of news of breakage! U heard it hear first folks cuz no one has mentioned it!

Feb 03, 10 - 06:25 pm Comment from: TheConfuzed1

I must admit that I'm intrigued by the possibilities, but I'm not convinced that I want one.

I didn't see the big deal with the iPod when it came out either though.

However, my houshold has had six iPods and two iPhones, with two more iPhone purchases waiting for the next model.

Apple makes products that you never knew you had to have.

And once you get a taste, you want more.

Feb 03, 10 - 06:26 pm Comment from: krquet

More I look at the images of iPad, with that inch of bezel, I can't help but wonder whether it was inspired more by function over form, slightly unlike Apple on the surface at least, and therefore threw a lot of folks off.

Feb 03, 10 - 06:26 pm Comment from: R2

Yeah, it should make them even fatter and more sedentary than they are now. Just what we needed.

The future of this country is doomed. If I had half of what these kids get today when I was a youngin, I'd probably never have left the house. Thank God I'm apart of the last generation who actually ventured outside to play with my buddies and chase girls.

America is on track to become a nation that no longer produces men. We'll have to import them from other parts of the world like we do everything else.

Feb 03, 10 - 06:33 pm Comment from: krquet

On an unrelated note:

“Google is a vampire, and you run scared,” Mark Cuban said. “There is no reason to be indexed in Google.”

He said readers who find headlines via Google rarely convert to traffic, and publishers have a hard time monetizing that traffic.

“You haven’t gotten anything back except that you’ve turned into zombies,” Cuban said.

Feb 03, 10 - 06:41 pm Comment from: @krquet

The bezel was necessary for function. Look at the picture above, can you image what it'd look like if the hands cover the left and right hands of the screen?? The iPod touch and iPhone are both small enough where they can be cradled in the palm, so you can put the screen from side to side w/o a bezel.

I think that's what I said, 'function over form.'

Consuming brainless Maoists - just the change he wants, long as they consume Apples.

Feb 03, 10 - 07:03 pm Comment from: Road Warrior nli

R2, did you not have TV and the phone when you were growing up? That device certainly has kept a lot of kids from going outside to play and chase girls.

You said that "America is on track to become a nation that no longer produces men." and I certainly have to agree with you there, especially after watching the way the American people rolled over and took it where the sun don't shine during the Bush administration.

Now I know that many people will be wondering who would be willing to import real men to the United States? After all it looks like China is the only ones willing to do any business with you these days, and heck they are communists.

My goodness, there really are no more real men in the United States.

But I am sure there will be. Just look for the military uniforms. Oh, they won't be US military uniforms, most of those will be in Iraq, no wait Afghanistan, no wait possibly Iran, no wait, wasn't Bin Ladin in Pakistan, no wait, they are mulltitasking while listening to Pandora. Oh well whatever, the real men have left your country or their spines have dissolved. Take your pick.

Feb 03, 10 - 07:11 pm Comment from: Sir Gill Bates

Speaking of uniforms, Hitler is really pissed about the iPads specs.

Feb 03, 10 - 07:16 pm Comment from: Ting

A book was published a few years back on how children of the new generation are growing up ‘wired differently’ through exposure to virtual tools and in particular, games.

As a Dad, I like the notion of one iPad per child in the family... Provided something is done to protect the little ones from certain websites and nasty predators who go phishing.

Any indication of what protection there may be for this device?

Feb 03, 10 - 07:26 pm Comment from: breeze

Ting:

Check out the Parental Controls Apple already provides in the System Preferences of your Mac. Since iPad is running OSX, there is all likelihood that these or better will be available for iPad parents. A Call to Apple or a visit to any Apple Store will get you the answers.

Feb 03, 10 - 07:29 pm Comment from: @ Sir Gill Bates

Huh?

Speaking of uniforms, Hitler is really pissed about the iPads specs.

I don't get it -- I ran thru the comments, they all seemed to misunderstand the video?? IMO Hitler represented ipad naysayers

@R2
if you are a parent with a spine, you can buy the iBox and lock up the iPad and get your kids some exercise.

Feb 03, 10 - 08:52 pm Comment from: Think

@ Ting

Yes, look in your iPhone or iPod Touch running 3.x or higher. You have all kinds of varying limits and outright blocks.

Feb 03, 10 - 08:53 pm Comment from: Jubei

R2 brags that he can be outside chasing girls while streaming PANDORA.

Feb 03, 10 - 09:08 pm Comment from: Buster

@R2....don't tell me...you walked to school uphill both ways in subzero weather while fighting off wolves with your bare hands.

"America is on track to become a nation that no longer produces men."

Well if you like, we can send some Canadian men down. We produce lots...just look at all the hockey players in the NHL!!!

Feb 03, 10 - 09:29 pm Comment from: Dualie's Ghost

R2 played with his buddies cause he couldn't catch the girls, so is it any wonder he wants to import manly men?

@R2: "Thank God I'm apart of the last generation who actually ventured outside to play with my buddies and chase girls. America is on track to become a nation that no longer produces men"

So what is your excuse for being a whiny b*tch? Obviously, going outside and chasing girls did nothing help you become a man. My only guess is that you never actually caught a girl and prefer take out all that frustration online?

Feb 03, 10 - 11:25 pm Comment from: Macerroneous

@R2
Most of what you have to say is obnoxious, but one thing rings true: fat kids with their iPads. It's the same thing that struck me in Wall-E. Humans were so fat they were confined to their lounges and transfixed by their screens. It seemed like Pixar's (ie Steve's) view of the human race.

Feb 03, 10 - 11:31 pm Comment from: Quad Core

Cuban then went on to say......"NBA officials $!CK!"

Scooby doo? That says it all-- a big fat electronic colouring book running OS X lite.
How many of you thought of this being the perfect airplane device for the kids? Not a serious machine. The lack of Flash support is beginning to p*ss me off. Did you hear the chuckles during Steve's presentation when he was on the "real" internet and the blue lego block scrolled by? I'll take a MBP any day. Thank you.

Feb 03, 10 - 11:39 pm Comment from: Ampar

"America is on track to become a nation that no longer produces men."

Screw you and your idiotic sexism, R2 the perennial cerebral failure.

Go hump ron.

Feb 03, 10 - 11:46 pm Comment from: Ampar

"a big fat electronic colouring book"

Fat? No.

Colouring book? Yeah, major fail for Marvel. And piss on imagination in as many layers as you can piss.

Flash? It's a battle of the past vs. future. I'll bet on future.

"I'll take a MBP." Wow. Thanks for admitting you're a fucking clueless, jack of the moment.

Is the iPad perfect? Hell no. But at least I understand WTF Apple is doing.

Feb 04, 10 - 12:05 am Comment from: Ampar

"but one thing rings true: fat kids with their iPads."

Lazy, fat parent = lazy, fat next generation. Duh, idiot.

Rob Halford came out as gay publicly (though fans already knew for quite some time} on an interview with MTV in 1998. This event was the subject of the song "Hats Off To Halford" by Atom And His Package.
