Massive demand affects Apple’s iTunes Store, iPhone and iPod touch 2.0 updates, MobileMe service
Friday, July 11, 2008 - 10:35 AM EST

Massive demand on Apple's servers today are causing MobileMe to act slowly/intermittently, iPhone/iPod touch 2.0 software to be available one moment and not the next, while the iTunes Store seems to be overloaded.

Our sources confirm that Apple is working on the issues and that huge ("unprecedented") server demand is most likely the cause.

Are you experiencing difficulties with any or all of the above, too?

Steve"s not going to be happy. Maybe should have allocated a few more servers and some more bandwidth for todays rollout.

Jul 11, 08 - 09:39 am Comment from: McIntosh

I'm still waiting for the 2.0 software to be officially available (or for the Applications tab to show up when I try to sync my first-gen iPhone). I hope it won't be long, since I have plenty of apps waiting to be tried out!

Jul 11, 08 - 09:40 am Comment from: MacSmiley

I don't think Ballmer's laughing any more about the iPhone, "the most expensive smartphone in the world".

no me!

Jul 11, 08 - 09:43 am Comment from: Bill

I just signed up for a "me" trail membership and it is SLOWWWW to the point of not responding at all.

Jul 11, 08 - 09:45 am Comment from: chrisj

I am having problems. I got the download, but can not get the itune store to come up (it comes up via the store button, but not when using the iphone button.

No phone-->I can't call my mother-->apple is anti family

Jul 11, 08 - 09:45 am Comment from: GizmoDan

I was able to play with my mobile.me calendar, then waiting for the email, I quit until later. Too slow.

This is great. This means the tsunami has started! My Zune-carrying buddy is going to buy an iPhone after work today (if they have any left).

Jul 11, 08 - 09:46 am Comment from: Free-America.com

I updated to 2.0, but I've been waiting for over an hour for iTunes to connect me to the store to actually activate 2.0 on my iPhone, so it's brick'd while I wait. :/

Jul 11, 08 - 09:46 am Comment from: Dan Beach

2.0 software downloaded fine from , but we're now getting "Error in iTunes Store (-98380) which results in the phone not being able to be "authorized". Completely unable to access iTunes store at all.

Jul 11, 08 - 09:46 am Comment from: zippy

took me an hour to update the software on my first gen iphone. Anytime in the process that it had to "access itunes store" it would hang up forever.... it eventually kicked in and finished the install. the upgrade is awesome!

Jul 11, 08 - 09:46 am Comment from: Huck

Hard to see how this could genuinely be unprecedented. They've had some pretty big server days in the past, if memory serves. And never anything like this sort of complete, multiple-day, multiple-product screwup.

Jul 11, 08 - 09:49 am Comment from: marko

I just updated my iPhone gen 1 over iTunes ... the process worked beautifully, until the activation process... I found my self waiting for 1/2 hour with an "Accessing iTunes Store" progress bar at the top of iTunes...

I disconnected the iPhone and reconnected it... only to find myself now receiving an error message...

I waited... reconnected the iPhone... I now have an "Accessing iTunes Store" progress bar at the top of iTunes...

I guess this is better than an error message...

My iPhone is presently waiting to be activated...

Sheesh confused

Jul 11, 08 - 09:50 am Comment from: JB

UNBRICKED ... after 2 1/2 hours finally.

Apple screwed the pooch in this one!

Jul 11, 08 - 09:52 am Comment from: DLMeyer

It's been close to two hours getting from "no service" to "slow service". Sure, it's an improvement, but it still leaves a LOT to be desired.
Bill, this is not - NOT - the service level I've come to expect over the past several years of .Mac use. I do hope they are installing new servers as fast as they can get them in the door.

Jul 11, 08 - 09:52 am Comment from: Mac User since 1984

I uploaded the OS 2.0 software last night using the "hidden" link that other Mac sites talked about. I was able to update the firmware, set up "Mobile Me" (I'm a .mac subscriber), sync to Mobile Me, set up push on the iPhone and even set up my Exchange email (which works perfectly as a "pull" service even though my company doesn't support ActiveSync.)

Everything worked just fine. I guess "jumping the line" was the right strategy.

Jul 11, 08 - 09:53 am Comment from: Crabapple

Ask not why Apple's servers are slow, but "How amazing that unlike servers operating M$haft's OS, Apple's servers are not crashing under the weight of demand!"

Can you imagine if it was the opposite? Just look what happened when a certain Countries emergency system crashed after it went online under the shafter's system!!!!!!!!

So can you all be gratefull for small mercy's?

Jul 11, 08 - 09:54 am Comment from: chrisj

...new error message:

-4 from the -98380

getting close!!!!

Jul 11, 08 - 09:54 am Comment from: Spark

Glad I downloaded and installed the 2.0 software yesterday. I got to play in the App Store and download some fun stuff. Very cool.

Jul 11, 08 - 09:55 am Comment from: Romeodawg

iTunes says "Accessing iTunes Store" but the iPhone shows an icon that says to connect the USB cable to the iTunes store... which makes me feel like it wants me to unplug and then replug my cable. But I don't want to lose my place in the queue for the store, so I'm just gonna let it ride. It's been stuck on "Accessing iTunes Store" for about a half hour so far.

Jul 11, 08 - 09:55 am Comment from: chrisj

From the apple support (posted by me):
==
...listen to you people!

I am without a phone also.

I knew that being a 2.0 first thing in the morning (east coast) was going to be a problem.
If I was jumping on a plane, had to go to work, etc and NEEDED my phone, then I would have waited.

I wish I did, but it was my CHOICE.

This is not a required upgrade.

There are worse things out there boys and girls. Go visit a hospital and walk the halls.
Go for a walk.
Eat something.
Have sex.
Do your work.
And say to yourself "Note to self: wait until a later time to upgrade my software"

Some of you sound like a parachutist falling from the sky thinking "should I have used this new parachute, or waited to see if it worked from someone else....."

geez.

(and go get a calling card if you need to make a call, or use that other guy's phone... the one that waited to upgrade and the one that smirked at you yesterday when you said "you're crazy, I'm going right home and download 2.0 ASAP!!!!!!"

Jul 11, 08 - 09:55 am Comment from: Step

Had those errors for awhile, lots of patient waiting and I finally got 2.0 installed, restored, activated, restored .... now I have no media on my phone, the apps crash everytime I try and run them....but I do have 2.0, and the phone part works again. *grumble grumble*

Yup, been trying to get onto the iTunes Store for over an hour. keep getting the "We could not complete your iTunes Store request. An unknown error occurred (-4). There was an error in the iTunes Store. Please try again later.

I now own a nice shiny brick once again!

Jul 11, 08 - 09:57 am Comment from: Al

Let's see. 6 million iPhone 1.0 users all trying to upgrade to 2.0 software.

1 million or so iPod touch users all trying to buy the 2.0 software.

30 million Mac users checking out the iPhone App store.

Several hundred cell phone manufacturer's executives checking out Apple's iPhone 2.0 stats and apps just before they fine tune their resumes.

Why are those servers overloaded again?

Jul 11, 08 - 09:59 am Comment from: Mr Bill

Got myself a version 1.0 phone, that's now an iBrick....it keeps trying and failing to connect to iTunes Store - I suppose to authorize itself or something - gets error:

We could not complete your iTunes Store request. The netowk connection was rest. Make sure your network connection is active and try again.

Jul 11, 08 - 09:59 am Comment from: sportav

I got an error message -1426 . the result - not able to fully restore my B1 iPhone after the firmware upgrade. Tried it twice before work this morning, same result. Phone works, App store works, but no restored photos, videos. Anyone know what a -1426 error is and what to do to resolve it>

error -9838 here

Jul 11, 08 - 10:04 am Comment from: Jon Mark Hancock

Tried to get the 2.0 update at 3 AM, not available.

At 6 AM, it was a god, but like others, stopped partway through with the iTunes store not available problem. After about a half dozen re-tries over a 15 minute period, "got in", and re-syncing was proceeding as I left home.

Forget trying to get on iTunes for the iPod touch update today! ;^)

But looking forward to it this evening or weekend.

Like others have mentioned, it's amazing that the servers haven't crashed; they're struggling with the load, but staying up.
Got on MobileMe web apps briefly last night, performance was pretty slow. It has only been intermittently available. Think I'm going to like it a lot once things settle down and the system is tuned.

Jul 11, 08 - 10:04 am Comment from: moiety5

Big problems updating to 2.0. Slow use of mail, not to mention yesterday's horrible issues.

Jul 11, 08 - 10:04 am Comment from: Mr Bill

Apple can count too. I disagree problems should be encountered, Apple should have expected them and planned accordingly. This is uncharacteristically Apple.

Jul 11, 08 - 10:06 am Comment from: Bill H.

Downloaded, installed, verified, firmware OK and.....

bricked.

Can't connect to iTunes to complete the process.

My error code is -9838, Please try again later.

(increase. as in increase the server capacity!)

Jul 11, 08 - 10:06 am Comment from: Leif

Yep. Me too.
I have a nice, shiny iBrick. I'm being patient, though. Grrr.

I updated mine at home, then got the itunes store problem, and I had to go to work. So yeah. Grrr.

Jul 11, 08 - 10:06 am Comment from: antmeeks

I'm glad I downloaded the 2.0 update yesterday;) The App Store intermittently displays items as "not available" when I click to view their info.

Jul 11, 08 - 10:06 am Comment from: Braddy

woohooo I got me an iBrick as well ... damn this is great!!! I do not have to answer to anyone!! woot woot

iPhone 2.0 update just crapped out after 45 minutes of downloading and backing up my data. Just received the "Error in iTunes Store (-98380" notice

Jul 11, 08 - 10:07 am Comment from: Mr Bill

OK...now I don't even get connecting iTunes Store....it just pops up with network connection reset...drat.

Jul 11, 08 - 10:08 am Comment from: JadisOne

Haven't been able to log into me.com since about 8:35 a.m. EDT.

Jul 11, 08 - 10:08 am Comment from: Eric

eek! The install went perfectly fine, but then I get an error message: "We could not complete your iTunes Store request. An unknown error occured (-9838) There was an error in the iTunes Store. please try again later."

And now the iPhone is not authorized... wahhhhh

Certainly seems like iTunes Store is overloaded... I was a little concerned this would happen. I strongly felt they should have rolled out the update to phones in waves over the course of a few days. Just experience with similar sorts of things, updating software on thousands of computers at once across a network."

Oh well... I am not too worried... I know Apple will make good on things, and did not mind making my iPhone the test case. My wife's is another story. She needs it critically at the moment, so once all is fine with mine, and a few days have passed, I'll update hers.

Jul 11, 08 - 10:08 am Comment from: Tommy Boy

Good thing I updated and downloaded my apps yesterday.

Jul 11, 08 - 10:10 am Comment from: ron

@Bill, " I just signed up for a "me" trail membership and it is SLOWWWW to the point of not responding at all."

You might try a "trial" membership. You're on the wrong trail.

Jul 11, 08 - 10:10 am Comment from: Plouf1er

From France :
- Intermitent access to me.com
- Incredibly long sync process for the iPhone (backups everything at each sync) --> To cancel just this step, i clic the cross, it jumps this step, much more comfortable.

--> Sync over the air is FANTASTIC (but slow actually on my 1st gen iPhone)

--> The remote app is worth the full year wait, just for it, try it !!
(tested on both Apple TV / iTunes)

I know what migrating millions users from one web app to another is.

I encourage all APple technicians, ant beg Steeve to be indulgent with them. This is soooooooo dificult...

I personaly am patient, ant thank al the cupertino (and other) teams for that wonderful upgrade, that will certainly become a new key to success for Apple.

To all entrepreneurs / IT managers : test it in a few days, and roll it out for your company, that rocks furiously !!!

Jul 11, 08 - 10:12 am Comment from: Eric

THIS IS SOOOOOOOOO CLICHE MICROSOFT!!!! WTF, APPLE!!!! DO YOU LIKE BEING COMPLETE IDIOTS ABOUT THIS!?

Jul 11, 08 - 10:13 am Comment from: Glor

Had no problem. Was 9th in line htis morning at my local AT&T;. Got my white iPhone and was activated and gone from the store by 8:20 am grin

Jul 11, 08 - 10:14 am Comment from: Mike

I have an emergency calls only iBrick, too. Can't connect to the iTunes store, try again later.

My feeling is that Apple knew there would be "unprecedented demand," they knew exactly how many phones they would have delivered and didn't prepare well enough. Not that this is inexcusable, but it certainly is inconvenient.

Hopefully I'll have a phone again soon. Wish there was a way to try to get it to reconnect without pulling out the cable and reinserting it. Hate to do that a thousand times in one day.

Mike

Jul 11, 08 - 10:15 am Comment from: Tom

Yep, I too am an owner of a version 1.1 iBrick. Thank You to everyone who posted so I know I'm not the only one. Hoping my phone will come back sometime today....

"We could not complete your iTunes Store request. An unknown error occurred - 9838"

DAMN YOU 9838!!!!

Jul 11, 08 - 10:15 am Comment from: bizlaw

Guys, chill out. Apple's having not only 1st Gen iPhones and iPod Touches downloading updates, but converting .Mac to MobileMe, launching the App store and registering a HUGE number of new 3G iPhones.

Things are bound to get bogged down. Al Gore didn't make the internet big enough for millions of new impatient iPhone users to be downloading, upgrading, and surfing the web at once.

Patience grasshopper. All will be well once the initial wave has passed.

Jul 11, 08 - 10:16 am Comment from: Islandgirl

Haven't been able to log in to my formerly .Mac account, now MobileMe account, since yesterday. Just tried again and it's still not up. Good thing I don't depend on it for work.

Jul 11, 08 - 10:17 am Comment from: terry

Mobileme is VERY, VERY slow.
I tried downloading and installing the iPhone 2.0 software.
It started installing and then hung.
Now I can't sync at all.
iTunes gives me error message
I tried calling Apple's tech support but it just disconnects me.
As of right now I have no phone.

Jul 11, 08 - 10:18 am Comment from: aking

@Dan Beach -
Same issues here. Old iPhone now bricked because unable to access iTunes store with the same error.

I wanted to update old iPhone before buying a new one - now I am not sure. Roll out of App Store, MobileMe and now the iPhone 2.0 update is terribly shaky. Appears to be server issue. I wonder if they are under a 'denial of service' attack. Sure makes Apple look bad... hmm

Jul 11, 08 - 10:20 am Comment from: Bill H.

@Mike:

No need to unplug and plug back in.

Just choose something else in your source list and then choose the iPhone again. It will do another check.

Jul 11, 08 - 10:20 am Comment from: Piot

Here in London.

Just get:

"We could not complete your iTunes Store request. An unknown error occurred (-9838)."

after updating to 2.0.
Can only make emergency calls .....
Guess I will have to be patient.
