Vaughan-Nichols asks, “What else can explain why Microsoft is now leaking news about Windows 7, the next version of Windows?”

I am genuinely touched by how proud Microsoft is of Vista and even more impressed by how they stand by this revolutionary OS in the face of MAC lemming’s astroturfing. Five years hard work completely reworking XP has really paid off. When did Apple ever pour five years into a core product and have the fantastic and groundbreaking results Microsoft has with Vista?
The enterprise can’t wait to get their hands on the awesome security and efficiency features in Vista. I’ve been using it at work and the only complaints come from the morons who can’t wrap their minds around some of the awesome new innovations. Like my boss and his boss. And some of my colleagues and the sales + marketing guys alongside the people who support them. Legal has a few problems with Vista. The warehouse and fulfillment folks complain too, but they bitch about everything. Accounting doesn’t complain because Vista is so cost effective.

If Apple wasn’t stuck on the “X” (10) thing, Mac OS X Leopard would be Mac OS 15. Actually, maybe Mac OS 8 and Mac OS 9 should have been 7.7 and 7.8, so do a minus 2. But I’ll defer the version numbers to Steve Jobs and the marketing folks, who did a very smart thing getting the modern Mac OS to be version 10. I wonder what significant milestone will be required to get it to version 11. Hopefully, it won’t be the fact that we ran out of marketable big cat names.

I fail to understand why some Mac people take such joy in reporting news that undermines MS ? Yes they are the Goliath of the industry but they also have to make software that works with a hell of a lot of third party apps and hardware. Apple of course does not have this problem and Yes NOW OSX is a better system all around then Vista or XP but believe it or not MS will survive and thrive. I prefer Apple to have smaller market share so that I can continue to enjoy world class customer service

Hey, it worked for Apple. Mac OS 8.x and 9.x could be called “service packs” to System 7. OK, they added some nice features to the existing System 7.6, but many of the changes were purely “cosmetic.” It was a stall tactic while Apple acquired NeXT and finished Mac OS X. Microsoft needs to once again copy from Apple’s playbook, while it ponders the future of Windows.

Vista I think is rather nice, elegant looking and nicely integrated with machines if setup right. I do give MS credit for the Ford Sync, a reasonably good first-effort product (something unheard of from MS!), and something Apple currently has no answer for. IIRC it’s also iPod compatible, a rather brazen attempt at “embrace and extinguish”.
However it’s gonna take more than a Ford partnership to keep MS afloat.
It’ll be interesting to see how Windows 7 development fares as Ballmer bankrupts MS. Crazy to think Vista was just the warm up act.
M$ have a lot to do to replace Vista if they want to do it properly. Following Mac OS X’s roadmap wouldn’t be a bad idea but remember that took Apple 3 years to get to the 10.0 and another two before it became mature. I don’t think M$ have that luxury and they cannot afford to piss off businesses with another piece of crap. I really don’t envy them. Probably best to milk what they’ve got, try and fix some of the glaring issues and start a long term replacement in parallel.

This is definitely happening right in the middle of Microsoft’s core small-medium size business market at the moment. It’s not just the unreliability of Vista in a corporate environment, it’s also Microsoft’s ever spiralling license costs. As they sell less units they try and claw back the extra revenue through licensing. Ultimately how times can you repackage a word processor, database or spreadsheet?
We’re currently developing a new version of our in-house system to be web based and therefore easily deployable. We’re trialling a mixed Linux and OSX platform and have been really impressed. It’s been a far more succesful trial that Vista.
I do wish Apple would put a bit more effort into their business platform. Licensing is still expensive even if it is cheaper than M$.
More effort needs to be put into OSX business solutions.
Still our marketing and sales department are looking forward to getting Apple notebooks.

How cool would it be if businesses insisted on XP upgrades for the next 5 years instead of upgrading to Vista? MS doesn’t make money on updates…could really send a message when those quarterly revenue reports come out.
The other day I was at a friend’s place in Queensland and got a chance to play around with Vista. What a pain in the butt. Every time I tried to download etc. I kept getting this bloody dialogue box. It was such a lousy experience.
The funny thing was that every time I mentioned Macs I kept getting a reply of “Oh no macs just aren’t as good” or they’re not compatible.” At least I tried.

Recall that Microsoft initially announced that it was planning to release Win7 around 2009. Now they are planned to do this around 2011. I believe they are making a marketing move to wring more money out of Vista (i.e. not giving up on it). Vista is not selling as well as people thought it should, but 100 Million+ is still good money. If Microsoft would release Win7 in 2009 it would cut into or stall future Vista sales. Corporations are usually slow to change, and a gap of only 2-3 years from Vista SP1 to Win7 might justify waiting for Win7. This would avoid, for a corporation, the disruption (i.e. risk, cost, etc.) of migrating to Vista. However, for Microsoft this 2-3 years would likely result in a larger then planned sales drop in Vista sales (and revenue).
By moving Win7 out four years, it should force the people who would “be fence sitting” about upgrading to Vista, to make the decision to move to it. Recall also to that Microsoft will be dropping support for XP during this time. In addition they will add service packs and features to Vista. These will likely not make Vista perfect but will remove some of the rough edges (i.e. recall history; compare XP to XP SP1 and XP SP2). This should make Vista upgrading appear to be a risk reducing move for corporations in a year or so from now. This should drive more Vista sales.
So my view is by increasing the amount of time before Win7 comes out from the initial announcements of 2009 to 2011, Microsoft will be driving more businesses/corporations to go to Vista before Win7 is released. Considering the investment in Vista, internally at Microsoft this approach would be a good business strategy. Microsoft is actually throwing more support behind Vista, not less by doing this.
That makes one of us!

For Microsoft to make Windows 7 a success, they will have to rebuilt it from the ground up like Apple did OS X.
Trouble is they don’t have anything like NEXT to start with (unless they find a way to buy Be OS or some such) like Apple did.
What ever they wind up doing they will get as close to Mac OS as possible and act as if they invented the whole shebang in the first place, with Apple copying every scrap of code that no matter that it having been written before Windows 7 release.
And it will be a nightmare to support and if anyone is psychotic enough to understand how to support it, they will carry an air of smug self importance.

Summary
I view that Microsoft is getting more aggressive about migrating business users to Vista, they are not pushing them to Win 7 instead of Vista. Also I view waiting for Win 7 would reduce Microsoft revenue (Microsoft reality) and expose their business customers additional cost/risk (the business customer’s future view or perception). I don’t agree with Steve’s article.
Some points (see prior post too):
When Microsoft moved Win 7 release from around 2009 to 2011 (likely will be slightly longer) they have subtly forced businesses to consider upgrading to Vista. Maybe the business’s are not considering it today, but later this year they will.
XP would be around 10 years old in 2011 and it would not be aggressively supported by Microsoft. Based on past upgrade experiences, business’s would wait at least a year before considering Win 7. Reality will set in that if I as a business wait for Win 7 I will be running on a 11-13 year old operating system that is not supported real well. Consequently most business will take the path of least resistance/risk and go with Vista (likely some businesses will trade to/from OSX, Linux, etc. also).
Microsoft is rumored to be releasing SP1 a month earlier. This I believe is the start of the show of getting business to migrate to Vista. I am stopping here, I am getting too long again – have some other points in prior post (not an simple topic) – Regards.
Hey MS, next time around would you please DUMP THE REGISTRY. It doesn’t make programmer’s lives any easier and it certainly doesn’t make the user experience any better. Why don’t you try an open source foundation like um…UNIX?

So if M$ is stumbling a little getting the corporate world onto Vista, what will be the reactions of MS$ itself and others be?
Many companies must be asking whether there will be opportunities in the space that they have previously been locked out of by M$ presence. What secret projects are going on in major companies (HP perhaps) and in start-ups. When a monopoly starts to crumble at the edges, someone out there will be salivating at the prospect, even if it’s only a few crumbs falling off the table to start with.
And what of M$ – protect the cash cow must be a major focus, assuming they don’t become utterly distracted by the Yooha nonsense. So if businesses aren’t keen on Vista:
First try to force them into submission. If that doesn’t work, then the issue becomes one of keeping them on the Windows platform. W7 is way out in the future, and many businesses will be sceptical after Vista and not keen to be early adopters. So a simple upgrade to XP might be a good option for M$. Make it easy to deploy into existing XP environments, make it fix a few of the current niggles and inefficiencies and give it a new name. Keep the project tight and focused and ship early. Bundle in a couple of business app’s to make the deal look attractive. Could be a winner and keep corporations in the M$ camp? As for a name, nothing creative, something obvious and giving no doubt as to its purpose, perhaps Windows Business.
Vista then becomes the superficially glossy product for the Wall Mart shelves.

On second thoughts – yes, go ahead and buy Yahoo, and waste your cash reserves, it’s not as if you will need them anyway when your business closes down in 10 years time.
Even though Microsoft is a massive company, massive companies need constant revenue to survive. The only way you consistent revenue is making products that customers want at the price they are prepared to pay and at the quality that is acceptable.
Microsoft hasn’t done this for 15 years, all its products arent selling in the volumes they used to in the 1980s. They are seeing more and more competition from global enterprises and small new businesses that are more innovative and faster to market with competing better products.
To be honest, If I was a major shareholder in Microsoft I would have jumped ship many years ago and sold all my shares and just bought Apple stock.
So, let Microsoft buy Yahoo – it’s not as if anyone uses Yahoo these days anyway. Yahoo’s search is far inferior to Google search. Yahoo offers nothing compelling or of any real value anymore. In the branding world the Yahoo brand is stagnant and dated and represents old world search.
I’ve already patented the name of the next Microsoft operating system. Due to be released around 2012.

My workmates are still using XP. The IT dept have no plans to go to Vista. If they have to wait for the next version (in another 4 or 5 years i guess) I’ll be a God among insects for a long time. I’m the only guy in the building who’s on a Mac. I’m about to be upgraded to the high end iMac. Is it realy gonna happen? Me, getting the last laugh. I bet I’ll be able to run Vista no worries.
I am getting very very concerned that too many people, journalists included are saying Microsoft buying Yahoo is a bad idea.
This may result in Microsoft listening to this advice and not going ahead with it.
Therefore, we must all make it our responsibility to tell everyone what a GREAT idea it is and how Microhoosoft will beat Google into second place within two years of it happening.

Actually, after scrapping the original planned scope for “Longhorn,” Microsoft re-started development “fresh” with the Windows Server 2003 codebase, in 2004. That’s why it took so long… because MS abandoned the years of work done before that decision in 2004. That’s why Vista is so bad… because MS rushed development to cram in all the development and testing into the last two years of the five-six years total that elapsed since XP. That’s why it has compatibility issues… because it was NOT based on the XP codebase. If Microsoft had just started with XP and added some cosmetic changes and a few new features, it would have actually been a better product.
MS needs to do a straightforward Windows “XP2” now and release it as “Windows 7” during the next three years. That will buy a few years. Concurrently, it needs to decide what to do about the future of Windows and create that fundamentally different OS by about 2015. Instead of buying Yahoo, MS needs to seriously invest in the product that gives it the billions of dollars to waste on buying Yahoo. But it seems like Microsoft doesn’t really want to face its Windows problems, and wants other “distractions.”

The proper name for the Macintosh OS is OS X, which is currently at version 5. Therefore, Windows version 7 will be two generations ahead of OS X.
Windows 7 will have two generations of additional memory leaks and buffer overflows built into the kernel. The HD DVD will come with 20 GB of crapware, crippleware and bloatware. It will be backward compatible with all known viruses and trojans, with minor modification. The built-in virus checker will only take 45 minutes to run after boot, during which time no other functions will be accessible. It will deny any activity other than those on an approved list maintained by Microhoo!

What cracks me up more than ANYTHING on these postings is how much so many are missing the REAL point here, something that is the biggest flaw in this deal and could hurt Microshit in a huge way.
MS has like $22 billion stashed away. The deal to buy Yahoo is a mix of cash and securities. If I was an investor, I’d choose to take the cash. That leaves MS looking for ANOTHER $22 billion. And if you don’t have that on hand, guess what? You BORROW it.
Now most of us are smart people here, so let’s look at the most relevant facts of all. MS is a company that has lost it’s way. It’s latest OS is a failure – forget about sales figures, most of those are from people buying computers with Vista preloaded. Now let’s look at Yahoo. The former king of search engines has also lost it’s way – to Google, of course. Its stock was in the toilet, employees jumping ship, and now layoffs. They cannot compete with Google anymore.
Finally, here comes MS, a company that is foolish and greedy, making an offer to buy a company that is in the shitter for 3x its stock price, thinking they can resurrect it and compete with Google. This has to be one of the most head-up-the-ass business deals I have ever seen, and I hope this spells the end of Ballmer’s tenure. Yahoo compete with the likes of Google? I don’t care who buys them – they lost their chance a long time ago. Their time has passed. And putting MS branding behind it will probably create more ill will than good.
So this could be disasterous for Microshit. Let’s hope and pray it is. No company deserves it more.

I’m a mac user, but I also run Ubuntu on some older machines I use. I was only a windows user until two years ago. I got interested in other operating system by playing around with linux. I became an Ubuntu user and abandoned Windows. I became an OSX user when I tried out osx86, and got a Macbook three months later. There’s no reason to use windows except for playing games and wine will soon take care of that.
There’s nothing good about any windows OS. Ubuntu linux is now as easy to use as Xp. And windows in general is very poorly designed. Can you tell me why it’s 2008, but windows still uses an Fs file system that needs to be defragmented (NTFS) and why the windows registry still present? XP wasn’t a good OS, but it sort of worked. Vista = XP + bloat+DRM+resource hog.
The only thing keeping Windows going is ignorance and momentum. The moment OS X or a Linux distro get a marketshare over ten percent windows is finished.

Or they’ll just scrap Windows altogether. It’s happened in the office where I work; OS X and Linux are more compelling than ever, and the more ubiquitous they become (rest assured they are), the less people will be fooled into thinking they need Windows. This isn’t a bitter retort, just a genuine trend that I see happening more and more in my own experience. I never thought I’d see the day when I wouldn’t be forced to use Windows at work, but that day has arrived.

I think it is getting close to the time that Apple finally guts the Micro$oft home user Market.
My company started a forced migration to VI$TA as of January 1. Worldwide we have about 100,000 employees so it’s a big deal. I really didn’t want to upgrade and now that I have I hate VI$TA even more. So pathetically slow and locks up at the most inopportune times.
It would sound worse if the next code name were three releases ahead of Max OS X.
Windows 13 doesn’t quite have that inspirational sound…

On another note as of the summer months these units increased to a total of 60 million. You bois better start researching your drivel you put out. Keep in mind that Vista is designed for the next gen PC, howver can still be installed on a P4, 512 ram amchine of 2-4 years ago, Can Apple do this?
