Dell, HP Compaq, Gateway, Acer, Sony, Toshiba, et al should be very pleased with this. They have been the engine for Microsoft's dominance by bundling the MS tax with their computers and this is how MS repays them - demos the first major upgrade to their OS in 5 years on competition's hardware!

Still, MS makes more money if people by a Mac and a full retail version of Vista than if they get Vista at the "bundle" price with their Dell.

This really is a win-win situation for Microsoft and Apple.

Of course, we all expect and hope that in the long term people are convinced to move to the better OS--OS X.

Exactly, Windows will be sold at full-retail to run on Macs. And then Office etc.

Yeah, we all know what happens when people actually use Macs and compare it to Windows but let's be real folks... how many average joes are going to see these pictures? This is just for us Mac nerds to enjoy. Now, if we could get someone at a major media outlet then mayber it'll mean something more. Either way, I'm sure Uncle Fester is spitting a vile e-mail to the guys in Belgium for this mistake.

Perhaps Macbook Pro with Core Duo provided the fastest and most stable hardware available for running Vista.

Perhaps some renegade Microsoft employees were flexing their iconoclastic muscle.

Perhaps Microsoft quietly and tacitly acknowledged that differences between OSs cannot be explained by differences in hardware.

Perhaps Microsoft imagines that Vista, devoid of so many promised features and significant attributes, is equivalent to OS X 10.4 in elegance, function, stability, and security.

Exposes more Mac people to Windows.
It sells more copies of Windows.
It shows that Windows runs anywhere!
Plus people buy more Windows software to run on their WindowsMacs.

Oddly, I was at the Columbus Circle CompUSA yesterday and in the Mac section was greeted by a CoreDuo iMac running Windows.... there's something WRONG about that! It's just a damn CREEPY feeling...

Twofer? I vote a Onefer! This shows that there is NOTHING better than Mac OS X, and that Microsoft practically admits it, by loading their rip of OS X onto a Mac! Morons.

That for the time being Mac OS X may be the better eye candy/secure OS, but it won't maintain that for long.

Because quite frankly there isn't much innovation left in computer operating systems, Apple has choked Mac OS x with more features than most everyone will ever use.

So as Windows catches up, like it always has, it will have a major foothold on the Mac hardware.

Over time as less and less developers code natively for Mac OS X and Mac users get more familiar with Windows, the training wheels will come off and Apple will be just another PC vendor.


Apple will survive, Mac OS X will be dead. The cult will live on and we will get used to Windows much like we got used to running inferior Intel processors.

Embrace and extinguish is the Microsoft way and Apple allowed them to do it.

Unforthunately, the "masses" will never see this picture of a Mac being used to demonstrate Windows. Yes, some will buy the Mac hardware just to run WIndows (one of my good friends has already done this). He loves his 15" MBP but is only using OS X for videochatting, etc. He uses Windows via Boot Camp to run his work and other home applications.

If I was Bill Gates, I would want every Windows user to buy a Mac and then purchase a license of Win XP or Vista. That way I would not have to discount the OS to the WinTel vendors. i would sell directly to the user and make more money.

There is no such thing as a Microsoft Windows computer. They are a software company while Apple is a hardware company that wishes they could use their software to sell hardware. (That's been the plan and perfectly logical to anyone who uses a Mac already.)

MicroSloth couldn't care less what computer people use as long as it requires everyone to buy a copy of Windows. As a matter of fact, they probably make more money on a stand-alone copy of Windows sold to a Mac person than they do on whatever they license to the Dell/HP/Whatever maker. Only when it looks as though M$ is selling fewer copies of Windows and losing OS share will they separate themselves from Apple. We all THINK this is what should or will happen, but there is no evidence that is is happening or ever will.

Well I can't but wonder if as things stand Vista runs better on the mac than any present PC laptop.

First, I'll wager that MS is gearing up brutal media campaign to point out how much "better" Vista runs than OS X on Apple's own hardware (whether it's true or not).

And second, I wouldn't put it past MS to have Vista look for an OS X install, then conveniently cripple it with garbageware. It's a given MS will have to install something on the OS X side to make Vista work.

Love MS or not, they've always been a tough fighter on the streets.
Whatever they're doing is aimed towards their benefit.

Apple should release Panther AHEAD of schedule by fully releasing it in August at the WWDC. It would really make Windows users question why they are waiting so long for so little.

A confident Microsoft should run Vista on the best hardware available for demonstration, which is a Macintosh. Shrinking from a direct comparison of Vista and MacOS X would be admitting defeat before the competition even begins.

Microsoft wants Macintosh owners to purchase Vista for their business and technical applications that only run on Windows. And there are numerous examples of applications that only run on Windows.

Windows and the MacOS have been compared for over a decade. You can argue that one is better than the other, but the market share is decidedly in favor of Windows at the moment.

Since cheap hardware has been in Window's favor in the past, in theory with Apple's adoption of Intel processors this effect should be mitigated. However, Apple would have to take 50% of the hardware market to claim 50% of the OS market, since MacOS doesn't run on other vendor's hardware.

Our friend Steve Jobs would have to make the strategic decision to run MacOS X on HP and Dell hardware for MacOS X to ever significantly erode Microsoft's market share. Never say never, but it probably ain't gonna happen...

Cheap hardware has slowly become a liability for Microsoft.

All those owners of cheap Dells, HPs and so on are crying to Microsft because the crap they where tricked into buying will not really run Vista. We all know how the PC side thinks. They believe all the fault is with Microsoft.

The US government could fully control media and Internet like they could, say, fully control every inch of US roadway. They couldn't. The Feds would have to suppress every single vehicle, and post police at every single intersection. It'd be both a nightmare and a joke.

Something important to remember is that to drooling Apple fanatics Microsoft is the evil Empire, while to Microsoft each Apple machine sold is likely a copy of Microsoft Office sold (which Microsoft makes a lot more money on per unit than they do Windows.) You hate them, they want to sell you software.

This is particularly true for intel macs--there has been article after article discussing how little interest there is in the business community for switching over to the upcoming version of Office--something like single digit percentages of large corporations are even using Office 2003 at this point. Many, many intel mac users, on the other hand, will be buying the next Office to have an intel-native version.

Microsoft is going to selling lots of copies of Office to mac users, and not a few full-priced copies of Vista. Why the hell NOT demo them on macs?

Microsoft doesn't care what hardware you run your computer on. This is actually the other way around:

Running Windows Vista on a Mac shows WINDOWS CUSTOMERS that they can still USE WINDOWS if they want to buy X piece of hardware. (In this case, X is a Mac.)

This has been Microsoft's mentality from day number one. You don't think Apple knows this? They'll have something up their leeve like they always do.

Having in account that Boot Camp, Parallel, the whole Mac on Intel phenomenon has just demonstrated HOW DESPERATE we were to be able to run Windows on our Macs, even if only to be able to play most recent games, I wouldn't get that smug.

People have the choice to use Windows on a Mac. Don't want it, don't use it. What's the big deal and why are people making it a big deal. If you don't want Windows, just buy a Mac and use MacOSX. This only benefits Apple and Microsoft. The end user has a choice.
