Microsoft exec: Apple’s iPhone is no threat to ‘great, exciting’ Windows Mobile phones
Friday, October 24, 2008 - 12:05 AM EDT

"Windows Mobile has nothing to fear from either the iPhone or Google Android, says Microsoft's John Curran," Paul Douglas reports for TechRadar.

"TechRadar asked the Windows business lead for Microsoft UK how he saw Windows Mobile, Android and the iPhone divvying up market share in three years' time," Douglas reports. "'Well I would have to say that number one would be, not surprisingly, Microsoft,' says Curran. 'We've got over 50 partners... from a hardware perspective we're really well positioned.'"

Douglas reports, "Placing Android and Apple in order in the remaining three rivals is 'a tough call,' he continues. 'One's an emerging one, the other is a very limited form factor. One has relatively limited hardware support and limited distribution; the other is just one form factor from one company with limited choices of operators. So they both at this point feel fairly restrictive compared to all the great options consumers would have with a Windows Mobile phone.'"

MacDailyNews Take: Mary Jo Foley has covered the tech industry for 20 years for a variety of publications, including ZDNet, eWeek and Baseline. She has kept close tabs on Microsoft strategy, products and technologies for the past 10 years. She wrote for the "Microsoft Watch" blog for Ziff Davis and currently writes for ZDNet's "All About Microsoft" blog. Foley once wondered if Apple's Mac OS X Leopard would drive some switchers to Windows Vista. We kid you not. Foley also once wrote a whole column about how, to her, Apple’s Mac OS X Leopard looks like Microsoft’s Windows Vista (while totally ignoring that Windows Vista tries (and fails) to look and act like Mac OS X. Any version. Starting with the Mac OS X beta which was released 8 years ago last month. That's over 6 years prior to Vista's glorious debut and even month before the release of Windows XP. In other words, she's a Microsoft sycophant through and through. So, just for kicks, let's see what Mary Jo Foley thinks of Windows Mobile: "I've avoided it like the plague. Every time I get a new cellphone, everyone always warns me not to get Windows Mobile. The thing's awful."

Douglas continues, "If you look at the exciting new phones that are coming out here in the UK, we've got some great consumer phones, whether it's the HTC Diamond, the Samsung Omnia, the Sony Ericsson Experia X1... these are great, exciting phones that have all of the features consumers are looking for, plus they bring in the experiences people would expect with Windows.""

These people are so in denial.

Oct 24, 08 - 12:15 am Comment from: Macintosh

Did John Curran happen to notice that the "one form factor" resembles the same one form factor that computers use? A big screen that can display anything. If you own a tower you probably don't even see the thing 90% of the time... All you see is the software that is displayed on the screen, just like the iPhone.

Peace!

Oct 24, 08 - 12:25 am Comment from: somewhat disappointed iPhone user

Ok... my experience with the iPhone has been mixed. I love the device as a portable computing device... but as a phone, it is lacking!! AT&T;has already replaced the sim-card because of constant dropped calls (yes, I have the latest firmware), and Apple is basically telling me to turn off 3G to avoid the problem. I have a great 3G signal most of the time where I live, but it doesn't seem to matter. I was a Sprint customer for years and almost never had a location where I didn't have a strong signal. Now, I have "No Service" about 10-20% of the time when I'm not near my home... sure it's because I'm driving through more rural areas, but it's not the middle of nowhere. All I want now is a phone that actually let's me talk to people (what a concept).

I think the experience that Microsoft spin master is the kind I have when constipated.

"Windows Mobile has nothing to fear from either the iPhone or Google Android, says Microsoft's John Curran,"

Riiiiiiight… you just go ahead and keep telling yourselves that. wink

From the top down, denial is becoming more and more entrenched at Microsoft, it would seem. And the less able they are to accurately perceive reality, the less they'll be able to react to what's really happening around them. Good for us, not so good for Microsoft or their shareholders.

That's more than enough reason to avoid Windows Mobile.

Oct 24, 08 - 01:07 am Comment from: Noodle-Armed Choir Boy

Curran talks about ‘great, exciting’ Windows Mobile phones.
And to prove with unassailable evidence the superiority of Windows Mobile phones, Curran also stated that Windows Mobile is, 'stirring', 'phlegmatic', and 'not mediocre'!

As Kev said...

May I add: These folks are all wet and denial is not a river in Egypt!

I have no been using the iPhone "officially" since July 11th and unofficially since the 1st Gen came out but not here in Oz... I went to a birthday party (i had to it was mine) and people were asking me about my iPhone and I was demoing it to them. One of the guests had a phone with Windblows Mumble on it and when he tried to show it off... the other guests asked him - will it do what the iPhone will do....

His answer - "Well, kind of"...

Most of the guests at the party are now all using iPhones and the WM guy is converting.

Has anyone else noticed that the "Apple death nails" aren't being hammered as often any more?

@somewhat disappointed iPhone user:

Just because you have good bars on your phone doesn't mean there's not too much traffic on the cell tower near you so your call gets dropped. AT&T;has had problems with rolling out it's 3G network, and it may be that you're affected by AT&T;.

I used to live 15 min. from Sprint's world headquarters, and I had dropped calls all the time with Sprint, and usually the same dead spots. Drove me nuts. Sometimes network coverage doesn't work well for how/where/when we want to use our phones.

Oct 24, 08 - 01:22 am Comment from: mackle

people, what do you expect these people to say? they are basically assuming they are talking to people who have never seen or used an iphone, the next lie will be that they are focusing on the phone functionality and the mobile computing functionality is just a hobby. that explains the current url hit counts. those ms mobile phones are doing a bang up job making the phone calls that people had purchased them for. when someone buys a device for the added functionality of the internet, they will make the right choice.

Oct 24, 08 - 01:35 am Comment from: KingMel

Curran is parroting Uncle Fester. I can almost hear, "I like our strategy. I like it a lot." I'd short MSFT stock if it weren't already low. Besides, it might take that bloated company quite a few painful years to blow it entire stash of coin.

If I were trying to sell phones, I would not boast that "...they bring in the experiences people would expect with Windows." Who wants a phone that takes a couple of minutes to boot up and has a button marked "Start" that shuts it down?

Here in Spain Apple and their partner Telefonica really messed up with the iPhone: too expensive, not enough units available (even now), awfull customer experience, etc. There is plenty of room for all the other handset vendors to continue dominating the market. Apple have done well, but with one expensive and closed handset they are never going to do as well as they could and M$ will continue to rool the roost.

Oct 24, 08 - 03:21 am Comment from: Macaday

Microsoft's partners: shackled and in chains and unable to escape the throttle grip that the hubris ridden MS has over them in making them exclusively use a dated, insecure, spaghetti code nightmare systems...

Now THAT'S partnerships for you...

Oct 24, 08 - 03:48 am Comment from: HolyMackerel

On the iPod and now the iPhone/iTouch Apple decided that a totally new interface was needed since it is not a small PC. MS never learned this lesson or understood clean interface design.

MS' agenda is to protect the 'Windows Everywhere' ideal in the face of superior design choices. Now that Windows interface has lost its appeal, MS risks losing everything. They are so far behind, that you have to wonder if they CAN catch up since Nokia, Google and Apple are all serious innovators.

Oct 24, 08 - 03:50 am Comment from: Falkirk

@Makle said: "people, what do you expect these people to say?"

First, one should never speak ill of a competitor. Apple does this too and while it can be fun at times, it's a poor overall strategy.

When asked about a competitor, one should always be respectful, but use the opportunity to point out the strengths of one's own company/products.

Oct 24, 08 - 06:49 am Comment from: Reality Check

I may be wrong about this, but the last time I made a purchase in our local Apple store, the transaction was conducted on a Windows Mobile (or some derivative) device. If that is true, I hope MS marketing doesn't latch on to that. You can't barcode or RFID with iPhone - yet.

Oct 24, 08 - 07:25 am Comment from: macbones

The next iPhone will have a display port. You will be able to plug it into a 24" monitor. It will have a much faster processor. If these dope-asses are taking a bruising now, just wait for generation-3. Furthermore, Apple is sitting on a $25B cash hoard. How about the other phone manufacturers? Do we think this is going to have any impact at al on innovation the next several years? Hmmm. If I were Windows, I'd be afraid.

Oct 24, 08 - 07:40 am Comment from: bobchr

This too could change, but it's currently the most cost effective solution to Apple in it's stores. I used to work for the company that manufactured those devices that Apple uses in it's stores. The company was bought out by Motorola. Before they were bought out they were making bar-code scanning modules that would be integrated into a Palm Pilot mother board. I'm sure Motorola could use some extra business making a laser scanning module that plugs into the IPhones port. There are also 2D bar-code scan apps in the APP store but they need to improve either the software and or the IPhone camera for those to work reliably well.

Just returned from a multi-city business trip spanning both coasts. The 3G iPhone performed flawlessly.

Though I bought a new MacBook whilst traveling, the iPhone is my fav.

Oct 24, 08 - 08:06 am Comment from: Brilliant Sandwich

Should I ask Microsoft if they would like to pay for my Widows Mobile testimonial? I was promoted 2 months ago to the international division of our company, which means I have been traveling 50% of my time to Asia. The company kindly gave me a phone to take with me. Sadly, they gave me an HTC Slider Tilt phone running Windows Mobile 6. This might have been tolerable if I was switching from my old Moto Razor phone, but I was switching from my iPhone. (1st Gen) I was kind of excited to not have to pay a phone bill anymore... then I actually got down to using Windows Mobile. Wow! All I can say is wow! THE WORST USER EXPERIENCE AND RELIABILITY I HAVE EVER SEEN ON A PHONE! In order to check E-mail, whether in the States or abroad, I would have to soft restart the phone in order to get a signal and if any E-mail was too long for Windows Mobile to download 100% I would have soft restart again in order to sync again and have the remainder of the message download. While in Hong Kong in September on my way to India there was a bombing in India and my trip was cancelled. The travel department at my company could not reach me on my phone... the phone wouldn't work and the E-mail stopped syncing, restart or not. So I got out my trusty Sprint phone card and used a hotel phone. This is just the tip of the iceberg on how much Windows Mobile sucks. And it says something in a company loaded with Microsoft apologists, they all hate the phone and Windows Mobile. Needless to say the second I got back from China last week I went and bought an iPhone 3G. I may not be using it Internationally, but at least 50% of my year, in the States, I can use a real phone. Microsoft needs to wake up and take a reality pill... your mobile software is worse than your OS. And I have used both.

"...exciting phones that have all of the features consumers are looking for, plus they bring in the experiences people would expect with Windows."

Experiences people would expect with Windows... I think that is the point. People expect to have a bad experience with Windows as they have that experience every day using the various MS OS systems. At least people do realize that if using MS mobil they will have problems. Just think if they actually used a platform that worked... A mind is a terrible thing to waste.

Here's a thought... just because a thing is considered the best thing currently available, doesn't mean it's the best thing. RIM's Blackberry was considered the best current thing not very long ago. In a lot of respects Windows Mobile is the current best thing too.

But Apple unlike Microsoft keeps evolving its products, like the iPod. 7 years running and still outselling everything out on the market by many millions. Also Apple has the power of evolving the whole widget, not just part of it which makes it a better product as well.

Oct 24, 08 - 09:36 am Comment from: steve516

I'm sure the iPhone outselling Blackberry has folks nervous.

3G is FAR more sensitive to cell site loading. The real problem has been that AT&T;grossly underestimated how many iPhone 3G's would be sold. If it had been at the same rate as the original version, they might have been able to handle it. As it was, they were overwhelmed.

Oct 24, 08 - 09:40 am Comment from: ralph from berlin

the problem for microsoft is not whether people like windows mobile or not or if wm 7 will be good enough nex year. the problem is now their business model. it all comes down to one question: why should all of their 50 hardware partners go on paying them licencing fees when they can have a better OS for free? why pay redmond instead of using android or soon symbian 60? windows mobile is dead, that's for sure. klar wie klosbrühe - as wie would say in german.

My Story:
I would have been perfectly happy with my Motorola phone - IF
it would download my Address Book, and my iCal. I could not find a phone from my provider that would do both. They told me they could not support the Mac.

Now I have the iPhone and it does both. The previous provider would not support Mac users and as a result has lost my business.
they can afford to burn $1200.00 a year?

On topic, I would point out that as a phone, it does not work quite as well as the Razers I was using. Close, but no Cigar. and battery life sucks.

I'm hoping for better things with the next gen.

That's an AT&T;problem. My parents switched away from them because of the same reason, just before the iPhone came out actually. 800 ft. from their house is a Cell phone tower; however it apparently doesn't have AT&T;.

I use T-Moblie and while I like the service it's no secrete that they have the worst selection in phones. Verizon has LG which makes great looking phones, AT&T;has Apple and T-Mobile hast....Google? That's also the biggest beef I have with the Android phone. It's ugly and big; and what's up with the 'bent' area at the bottom?
