Microsoft executives’ internal emails highlight Windows Vista discontent
Monday, March 10, 2008 - 10:09 AM EST

"Here’s one story of a Vista upgrade early last year that did not go well. Jon, let’s call him, (bear with me — I’ll reveal his full identity later) upgrades two XP machines to Vista. Then he discovers that his printer, regular scanner and film scanner lack Vista drivers. He has to stick with XP on one machine just so he can continue to use the peripherals," Randall Stross reports for The New York Times.

"Did Jon simply have bad luck? Apparently not. When another person, Steven, hears about Jon’s woes, he says drivers are missing in every category — 'this is the same across the whole ecosystem,'" Stross reports. "Then there’s Mike, who buys a laptop that has a reassuring 'Windows Vista Capable' logo affixed. He thinks that he will be able to run Vista in all of its glory, as well as favorite Microsoft programs like Movie Maker. His report: 'I personally got burned.' His new laptop — logo or no logo — lacks the necessary graphics chip and can run neither his favorite video-editing software nor anything but a hobbled version of Vista. 'I now have a $2,100 e-mail machine,' he says."

Stross reports, "It turns out that Mike is clearly not a naïf. He’s Mike Nash, a Microsoft vice president who oversees Windows product management. And Jon, who is dismayed to learn that the drivers he needs don’t exist? That’s Jon A. Shirley, a Microsoft board member and former president and chief operating officer. And Steven, who reports that missing drivers are anything but exceptional, is in a good position to know: he’s Steven Sinofsky, the company’s senior vice president responsible for Windows."

Stross reports, "Their remarks come from a stream of internal communications at Microsoft in February 2007, after Vista had been released as a supposedly finished product and customers were paying full retail price."

I've installed Leopard on 3 machines and everything has worked flawlessly (a Mac Pro, a quad G5, and a PowerBook G4).

Mar 10, 08 - 09:12 am Comment from: January 24, 1984

I know two IT department heads who have retro-upgraded to XP.

Is there a precedent for this?

Mar 10, 08 - 09:36 am Comment from: Keith

Although it holds no comparison to Vista, I have a little bitch about Leopard... Installing it rendered by HP LaserJet 3055's scanner useless. I have to scan into an old Tiger Powerbook, upload to the company's fileserver and retrieve the scanned image with my Leopard MacBook Pro. C'Mon, HP and Apple - fix the f-ing drivers already!

This article is like deja vu all over again.

Mar 10, 08 - 09:45 am Comment from: Switched

Over to you Zune Tang....lol.

Vista is shit and is an embarrassment even to the poor sucks that developed it. A very sorry excuse for an operating system.

Mar 10, 08 - 10:01 am Comment from: Steve516

@ Keith...

I had similar troubles with an HP scanner on a friend's machine, and HP did update the drivers. I was able to get it to work 3 weeks after Leopard was released or so. Vuescan did not work either at the time...

Mar 10, 08 - 10:03 am Comment from: Jim

Yup, upgraded every Mac under my command to Leopard, without a hitch.

they are also all backing up hourly using Time Machine, to a 3TB RAID setup attached to my Mac Pro (the beast of the office)

All works fine, fast, and very very slick!

Vista? What a joke.

@Keith - Just get VueScan, it will solve ALL your problems.

Leopard is close to perfect and a million times less trouble than Vista (for me/my employer). But "close" doesn't cut it. Leopard is not COMPLETELY perfect. For every hundred issues that stop Vista in its tracks, there IS one issue with Leopard.

Which doesn't sound like much... unless YOU are the unlucky one going online asking for Leopard help.

Vista may not be all that, but Microsoft is a proven leader. Don't give up on Microsoft just to get "fewer" problems. In the end, Vista's problems will be worth it--to most people. Because I sure would be sleeping sound with Microsoft backing me up. Call be crazy, but I want a big friend at my back more than I want my machine to "just work." THAT is why Macs are best for schools and small business--and not for home or big business. This could change--but will Microsoft let it? They ain't that stupid.

Mar 10, 08 - 10:22 am Comment from: Jay-Z

@ Get Real:

I certainly hope your post was sarcasm. If not, you have poor taste in friends.

Microsoft is not, nor will it ever be, your friend. Microsoft has abused customers, partners, and competitors for decades. Two groups of people use Microsoft products: those who have no choice and those who don't know any better.

Macs are far better than PCs in most settings. Period.

When it comes to drivers I had an issue with my Canon LiDE 30. That being no drivers for 10.5 Leopard from Canon.

This is not an Apple issue, but Canon's and unfortunately according to Canon there won't be any 10.5 drivers for my LiDE 30.

The solution, I'll have to go buy a new scanner! I have my eyes on the LiDE 90 and that does have drivers for 10.5 Leopard.

Despite Vista's troubles at least Vista users have a dedicated section on the Canon website to find out what works and what doesn't. I had make a phone call to some techie to find out.

As someone who uses Windows ( I still use a Mac), I know better to never perform an UPGRADE from one Windows version to another. Many compatibility problems arise from third-party software to existing Windows settings.

It is better to save off any data and then perform a CLEAN install when dealing with Windows. However, Vista is the 80,000 pound monster reeking havoc with computers and customers' patience.

I've never had a problem with ANY version of OS X (except for 10.0). Everything bloody WORKS.

To America and the rest of the world, buy a FRAKKING Mac already (or 2 or 3).

My Lexmark 510 printer doesn't work with Leopard. It isn't any drivers for Leopard. Before you say, It isn't a Lexmark C 510 printer. So no need to tell me them drivers are included, as my printer isn't Lexmark C 510.

Mar 10, 08 - 10:59 am Comment from: Marc

@JAYGEE:
I'm not saying this to cause problems or tease you or anything but, would you please restate what it is you are trying to say? I realize it has something to do with lexmark printer drivers but am having trouble getting beyond that. I completely understand if English is not your first language (though I have no idea if it is or not), but it would be easier to offer help if I understood what you were saying. Again, no offense is meant.

Just upgraded 3 older iMacs at work to Leopard. The little bit of testing I did encountered no problems. With the exception of the motion Video Effects on iChat not working too well, the big L rocks. Have been able to transfer files from computer to computer over the network, set up thru Time Capsule, and even over iChat. Even the thought of switching to a PC makes muscles in my body involuntarily tighten. Every time I need advice about what to do on the Macs, I call Tech Support. They have been terrific.

Ouch! I love that jab!

Mar 10, 08 - 11:59 am Comment from: Bill McCloskey

Hi, Jaygee.

I helped convince my friend to switch to Mac. When it came to getting his Lexmark printer to work, there were no drivers for it. He ended up buying a new printer. Ugh. So embarrassing. Alas, I believe this is the exception rather than the rule, but I believe if he didn't upgrade from Tiger (the shipped OS) to Leopard, he'd be able to use his Lexmark. Oh well. That's the way things go.

Bill

Mar 10, 08 - 12:02 pm Comment from: Bill McCloskey

Oh, Marc. I think what Jaygee is saying, there is a similar driver for a Lexmark color, but he doesn't have that printer. When I was troubleshooting my friends Lexmark, we had a similar deal - a similar driver existed, but didn't work with his printer. We called both Apple and Lexmark. Apple said it's up to Lexmark for the driver, and Lexmark said - "not there yet."

@macjammer

Why give Canon more money if they do not provide drivers for legacy equipment? Unless you really like their technology I would try out another vendor.

Is it possible to install the old Tiger driver into Leopard. It may work.

Also Vuescan does have a good reputation for bringing scanners and printers back on line with MacOSX.

Mar 10, 08 - 03:29 pm Comment from: ZuneTang

Okay, I told all you MAC lemmings that you just do not get it. My Vista® experience has been flawless. I am happily running every peripheral device with no problems - printers, scanners, et. al.

Go ahead, install your lovely Leopard (whew, what a name!) and suffer with the rest of the MAC loving and I-Phone lovers who cannot run a REAL® computer. Actually, I like working on my sweet Vista® running machines - doing various kinds of maintenance and things like that. You MAC users just do not understand or know how to use a Real® working-class computer.

@get real,
You're joking right?
Macs are totally perfect for home use. I've been using Macs for years & wouldn't dream of using anything else.

As for business use - all of the places I've worked have had Macs as well as pc's. The Macs have always worked great w/ the networks & have far fewer problems & downtime than the pc's.

Jay-Z is correct: "Two groups of people use Microsoft products: those who have no choice and those who don't know any better."

Mar 10, 08 - 06:35 pm Comment from: Scanning

Until you get a new scanner or the vendor produces a new driver, just scan using Windows/Parallels/Fusion in Leopard.

That's what Parallels/Fusion is for. Legacy OS (like Vista).

Once HP gets its act together and releases an all-in-one update (I can't believe it is not already doing that) then we should be better off. Or maybe HP is not releasing updated drivers so that they can goad everyone into buying new equipment.

Your potential, our passion, huh, Poon Tang? The potential for a monumental screw-up of the global variety.

Hey Zune Thang, if you bothered to read the article you will find that it is not the Mac and iPhone lovers that are suffering here, rather Mike Nash and Jon A. Shirley, both from the high level management of Microsoft. I don't know what computer they are using, might be a Mac, might be a Delldo.

So maybe, you could go talk to them and share how they can have a flawless experience on Vista just like you are having. Maybe Mike and Jon just do not understand or know how to use a RealToy® operating system (as opposed to a computer since MS doesn't make desktop/portable computers).

Hey Keith, I had the same problem. I couldn't scan with my HP 3055 using my new MacBook running 10.5.2. VueScan doesn't work with the 3055 on the Mac -- it detects the scanner but announces that the Mac version of VueScan can't interface with it.

I finally found a work around -- to the best of my knowledge HP *still* hasn't updated their drivers. (Although I've heard rumors that the problem is a change in Bonjour networking with the intro of Leopard.)

1. Uninstall all the printers & faxes associated with the 3055 in the System Preferences: Printers panel.
2. Download the latest driver for 10.4 from HP -- it weighs in at about 125 MB.
3. Install the drivers, and let it restart your computer (actually, I had to restart it myself, but whatever:)
4. While the computer is rebooting, wander over to the HP 3055 and use the arrow & ok buttons to print out Reports: Network. You'll find the printer's IP address on the piece of paper it spits out smile
5. On restart, the HP Assistant will appear and help you choose your printer. Rather than picking your printer from the list, click the "create" button to type in the 3055's IP address (that you found on the report).
6. Do a spotlight search for HP Scan and get info on the HP Scan app (you can just type command-I while it's highlighted in the spotlight menu). Check the box that says "Open using Rosetta". (Otherwise it doesn't seem to launch properly).
7. Bada bing! Scanning should now work in HP's Scan software. For me, at least, the create button + Rosetta was the magic bullet.
