Microsoft figurehead Bill Gates sees next version of Windows ‘sometime in the next year or so’
Friday, April 04, 2008 - 04:26 PM EST

"Microsoft Corp. co-founder Bill Gates said on Friday he expected the new version of Windows operating software, code-named Windows 7, to be released 'sometime in the next year or so,'" Michael Christie reports for Reuters.

"Gates' comments suggested that a successor to the Vista program might be released sooner than was generally expected," Christie reports.

"Microsoft has said it expected to release a new version of Windows approximately 3 years after the introduction of Vista in January 2007. A company spokeswoman said Gates' comments are in line with a development cycle that usually releases a test version of the software before its official introduction," Christie reports.

"'I'm superenthused about what it will do in lots of ways,' Gates said," Christie reports. "'That'll be sometime in the next year or so that we'll have a new version,' Gates said in response to a question from the audience."

"He said new versions of Windows would help revolutionize mobile phones and run the desk of the future, which would have a touch surface display allowing users to call up items using their hands," Christie reports.

MacDailyNews Take: Superenthused? Gee, oh, golly, oh, wow, Buddy, neato!

Bill Gates is to cool as Dracula is to dead.

Plus, he's a functionally derivative liar who's currently trying to buy his way into heaven with ill-gotten gains, thinks it's still 1995, and who really ought to get busy checking into that darkened Vegas hotel room to start growing his fingernails to absurd lengths, thereby sparing us all the torture of having to listen to any more of his doddering nonsense.

"Microsoft figurehead Bill Gates sees next version of Windows ‘sometime in the next year or so’"

He saw a vision floating in his cereal this morning as he gently rocked himself into a trance with his eyes rolled back, a crooked grin and a warm, steady string of drool flowing into his lap.

Apr 04, 08 - 03:33 pm Comment from: anthony007

In Microsoft speak, 'or so' translates into 2-6 years.

Apr 04, 08 - 03:35 pm Comment from: Ampar

To anthony007:

Oops. Take the dash out between your 2 and 6.

wink

What's with the picture. Seriously, a little professionalism, SteveJack.

Apr 04, 08 - 03:38 pm Comment from: ericdano

So then, why upgrade to Vista then? Why not just keep XP alive a while longer?

Apr 04, 08 - 03:38 pm Comment from: Wade

He's three days late with this joke.

Apr 04, 08 - 03:39 pm Comment from: drhufufur

if that timeframe is to be believed, then there is NO point in migrating to Vista; just hang on that little bit longer.

What does that say about MS's confidence in its own products?

Apr 04, 08 - 03:40 pm Comment from: Kev

Why don't they just give it up already? By the time this Windows 7 mess comes out there won't be a single Windows user around to even care. Flattering picture of Gates btw.

Apr 04, 08 - 03:40 pm Comment from: Mr. Reeee

We'll all be loading Mac OS X 10.7 on our Macs by that point.

MDN's Take contains two absolute gems that will be quoted by others for years to come:

"Bill Gates is to cool as Dracula is to dead."

-and-

The new term "functionally derivative."

Still laughing, MDN!

Hey now, I'm sure that picture was taken professionally. Besides, that picture is about as good as he deserves.

Apr 04, 08 - 03:56 pm Comment from: Ampar

To clyde:

LMFAO ! ! But he"s probably bought a few hundred by now for laboratory analysis.

grin

(I'm picturing Bill hiding on the floor of a closet in his mansion with a MacBook Air and Leopard whispering, "Holy crap, this is cool. We gotta copy this.")

I love that picture! The guy is a dirt ball!!!!!

Apr 04, 08 - 04:05 pm Comment from: Mac-nugget

I hate Microsoft, but MDN take is harsh. Buying his way in to heaven though ill-gotten gains?!

I have a feeling that Jobs, how is actually quite wealthy has much less of an altruistic mind set. MDN, criticize what can be criticized. You simply do not have a point here.

Carlos Slim has surpassed Gates as far as wealth, he helps no one but him self, and the same can be said of the majority of the worlds billionaires. Sure Gates is a slime-ball boring, untalented nerd, but he is a lot more generous with his wealth then Steve Jobs in any case.

"Bill Gates is to cool as Dracula is to dead."

Mac-nugget.

How the fsck do you know what Jobs does or does not do for charity?

Answer: You don't. So, shut the fsck up, you pontificating asshole.

@Mac that Roared:
Think you may have missed ApplePi's sarcasm-any pic of Gates is bad smile

Wondering if MS moving to Win 7 so soon may be a tacit admission that Vista is a monumental flop. If so then Id ask for a damn refund.

Apr 04, 08 - 04:11 pm Comment from: qka

I knew I had a good reason to hold off on that Vista upgrade!

What a visionary. A big ass table in every dinning room. Just as good as an iPhone and it comes with legs!

Apr 04, 08 - 04:19 pm Comment from: Andy

As an aside, who cares if Steve gives a dime, or not, to some nebulous 'charity'? Altruism isn't all it's cracked up to be, I'll tell you what...

As for Windows 7 being released 'next year' - talk about panic over Vista's unmitigated disaster. What a marketing gimmick Microsoft has these days,

"Yeah, our execs don't like/use Vista either - give a year to bring out a 'new' OS!"

Apr 04, 08 - 04:19 pm Comment from: oh no my shorts

I am THO-O-O-O glad that Bill ith THOOOPER enthused about it in THO-O-O many wayth!

Apr 04, 08 - 04:20 pm Comment from: January 24, 1984

Even MSFT is anxious for the Vista pain to end.....

Apr 04, 08 - 04:21 pm Comment from: Tired of Retards

Bill Gates makes me extra tired.

For the Windows 'tards who've stumbled here all excited about their next fake Mac, I'll help you out:

"Bill Gates is to cool as Dracula is to dead."

Dracula is undead.

Get it, yet? Or do you 'tards need even more help?

Apr 04, 08 - 04:25 pm Comment from: All you can eat

That's got to be making the group that paid $400.00 to $500.00 bucks for Vista junk unhappy. Is MS going to pop out a brand new OS every year now? MS will probably happily charge them another $500.00. for more crap.

That in itself will turn a huge crowed away.

What's the saying - "Fool me once shame on me, Fool me ... uh ... we won't get fooled again."

... then there are those others who love pain.

Apr 04, 08 - 05:08 pm Comment from: shen

Apr 04, 08 - 05:09 pm Comment from: Ampar

"the undead talking to the uncool"

NICE ! ! Great line!

"Altruism isn't all it's cracked up to be, I'll tell you what..."

Ain't it the truth:

"The [Bill and Melinda Gates] foundation invests the assets that it has not yet distributed, with the exclusive goal of maximizing its return on investment. As a result, its investments include companies that have been criticized for worsening poverty in the same developing countries where the Foundation is attempting to relieve poverty. These include companies that pollute heavily and pharmaceutical companies that do not sell into the developing world."

Bill and Melinda personally make all of the investment decisions.

Bill is still waiting for his virus scan to finish.

It's like deja vu all over again.

Apr 04, 08 - 05:18 pm Comment from: Macaday

Microsoft thinks it will solve it's problems by rushing to the magic Windows X, er I mean 10.

Can't see anyone at all being enthused by anything MS promises from here on...

Apr 04, 08 - 05:26 pm Comment from: Zeke

"'A company spokeswoman said Gates' comments are in line with a development cycle that usually releases a test version of the software before its official introduction,' Christie reports."

That would be a BETA version then in 1-3 years, wouldn't it. Can you say "VAPORWARE"? I knew you could!

Apr 04, 08 - 05:28 pm Comment from: Jubei

I bet Zune Tongued got a Woody whenever his lord the beastmaster utters that superenthused word. wink

Apr 04, 08 - 05:30 pm Comment from: Steve - How This is TRULY Happening

Bill and Steve got Steve Jobs to pony up and License them Panther - when they saw it they flipped out and can't wait to re-brand and deploy.

Okay, now for the actual way they can launch a new OS above and beyond Vista:

Vista had features stripped and stripped from day one. M$ is working to finish those up and add a touch ability to the OS, thereby calling it "new."

What this really is:
Vista, 85% complete under a new label - oh, with touch, so it's really cool...

Pathetic.

Apr 04, 08 - 05:34 pm Comment from: AppleMacMan

If Bill Gates is already talking about a new OS in a year from now which we know is definitely not going to happen, what more proof does one need, to realize that Vista is an abysmal failure? Only the M$ fanboys actually like Vista. Everyone else is avoiding it like the bubonic plague.

Meanwhile, Mac OS X has brought the "WOW" in computing that Vista was suppose to with an explosion in market share. I was shocked to see that one Apple analyst already has the Mac market share at 10% with world wide market share at 21% Perhaps these numbers are liberal but they do reflect the tremendous growth of the Mac. 

Apr 04, 08 - 05:41 pm Comment from: Keith the Vegetable Protein Man from Brazil

Altruism is underrated.

But to understand that you'd have to do it yourself.

Apr 04, 08 - 05:53 pm Comment from: Anonymous©

Well, the next year or so, is 2009 or later. Didn't they originally say in 3 years they'd have their next release? So, that puts it about 2010, which is kind of what Bill said, I mean they have to put the public beta out in 2009, right? Right?

Apr 04, 08 - 05:54 pm Comment from: ➨ ☝ ♬♬☟ ⬅

I wonder just how much more crappy code they can pile atop DOS / Vista before it completely crumbles ...

Apr 04, 08 - 05:55 pm Comment from: The Dude

The Dude abides.
