“Microsoft Corp. co-founder Bill Gates said on Friday he expected the new version of Windows operating software, code-named Windows 7, to be released ‘sometime in the next year or so,'” Michael Christie reports for Reuters.
“Gates’ comments suggested that a successor to the Vista program might be released sooner than was generally expected,” Christie reports.
“Microsoft has said it expected to release a new version of Windows approximately 3 years after the introduction of Vista in January 2007. A company spokeswoman said Gates’ comments are in line with a development cycle that usually releases a test version of the software before its official introduction,” Christie reports.
“‘I’m superenthused about what it will do in lots of ways,’ Gates said,” Christie reports. “‘That’ll be sometime in the next year or so that we’ll have a new version,’ Gates said in response to a question from the audience.”
“He said new versions of Windows would help revolutionize mobile phones and run the desk of the future, which would have a touch surface display allowing users to call up items using their hands,” Christie reports.

I know some folks on the receiving end of Bill’s charity. Some suspect that Melinda has had a great influence; seems he made a good choice in marriage. However, more than anything they compliment Bill for making it fashionable for the rich to give away their wealth. Perhaps we could credit that as innovation without being scornful. But whatever the motivation, people are doing good with Bill’s money and are thankful for it.
The tone against Gates is unnecessarily biased and nasty. The dracula line is good, but the other stuff just sounds small and dopey, and undermines the good-spiritedness of the site.

As to Big Brother Bill’s philanthropic ACTIVE-ities, I tend to think of him as a modern Andrew Carnegie. He was the huge, incredibly wealthy steel magnate of the 19th and early 20th century. Today he is remembered for his charity work that resulted in some terrific institutions and buildings. But in real life he was a ruthless basturd. He wrote books about how the wealthy should enrich society. He slipped out of the country while he directed his company to cut worker’s pay, lockout union members and bring in scabs to replace them, resulting in deaths during the riot that followed. In short he was a happy, smiling, beneficent man who screwed everyone he didn’t need to impress. To quote his page at Wikipedia:

Subtract Carnegie’s innovative flare and add in a pinch of Nostradamus psychosis and you have Bill Gates.

That is exactly the point I was going to make. We have seen this game before. There is only two years between Windows 98 and Windows 2000. Most people (gladly) forget that Windows ME was between those. 2000 was the upgrade to NT while ME was the upgrade to 98. But ME was so horrible – earning the nickname Mistake Edition – that 2000 was the adopted OS. Which of course lead to the demise of the 95->98->ME line of products and left only theNT->2000->XP line. Having ME was like having to take your nerdy sister to the school dance. Once you got there you ditched her to find a real date. I just wish that during that time period more people would have ditched to ugly sister ME for that future super-model Mac OS intead of that cheap tramp Windows 2000.

Windows NT was actually basically a good OS for its time. (What really ruined it was making it backwards-compatible with Microsoft’s existing trash, eventually merging it with the Windows 95/98 line, and heaping spaghetti code on top. But the original design was good.)
Moreover, the filesystem that was written for NT — NTFS — is solider than HFS+ … but what isn’t?).
But NT was down to Dave Cutler not to Microsoft’s “Chief Software Architect” Bill Gates:

Cutler, of course, came from DEC and NT bears more than a passing resemblance to DEC’s operating system VMS …

The internet-wide overreaction to anything even remotely related to the phrase “Windows 7” seems to be proof of this. (The smarter ones, of course, have been switching to Macs to have their “someday” today.)

I agree with Gabriel’s POV, but certainly he is writing in ‘Computer Warz’ mode, which is to say he sounds like he is blasting trolls to smithereens. Considering the never-ending-stream of FUD and hate from certain infamous Windows PC using types, it is all too easy to stay on the offensive. In the past I have certainly been guilty. Rational Windows PC users see the Computer Warz mode and think the ‘soldier’ is nuts, when that is actually not the case.
The perfect solution of course is to be calm and factual. That nearly always proves the point. Personally I like taking on a snarky persona for the sake of humor, which helps keep me cheerful in the midst of helping free people from bad technology. I need a laugh and hope others enjoy a laugh as well.
