Microsoft flip-flops: allows Vista Home Basic, Vista Home Premium virtualization
Tuesday, January 22, 2008 - 10:20 AM EDT

"Most people expect some flip-flopping in an election year, but not usually from their software vendor," Ina Fried reports for CNET.

"Nonetheless, Microsoft on Monday changed its mind again, saying it will allow users to run Vista Home Basic and Vista Home Premium as guest operating systems on a virtual machine. The news is especially welcome for Mac users who want to run the latest Windows version without having to pay an arm and a leg. Until now, Mac users and others wanting to run Vista virtually have had to fork over for the most expensive Business and Ultimate versions," Fried reports.

"Microsoft group product manager Patrick O'Rourke said in a telephone interview Monday: 'Now is the right time, we believe, to make it easier for technical enthusiasts...to experience and see if virtualization is right for them,'" Fried reports.

MSFT abandons HP, and Dell, seeing APPL as the soon-to-be leading PC manufacturer.

Especially in the race for the lap(top).

Its bad enough I have XP Pro running on my MacBook Pro, why the hell would someone want to put Vista on there Mac. Most of the people I speak to don't even want it running on their PCs.

Jan 22, 08 - 11:29 am Comment from: DLMeyer

Microsoft doesn't care where they get their cash from ... cash is cash. So, if Mac users are buying XP for their Macs instead of Vista, why not plump up your Vista sales figures - and profits? - by giving them a more affordable Vista option? They have to sell those remaindered boxes somewhere!
wink

So the home users can make their laptop suck for less??

Jan 22, 08 - 11:38 am Comment from: Rob

I realize that Microsoft is making this move due to lagging sales of Vista, but I'm definitely still not interested. I'll just continue to use the copy of XP Pro that I purchased back in 2001 for the few times I actually need to run Windows in Parallels.

@DL Meyer

"They have to sell those remaindered boxes somewhere!"

Or not. Microsoft has the money to outdo EMI, according the this article, EMI spends 25 million UK pounds (about $US 50 million) per year destroying unsold merchandise.

I think MS might get the idea that this way it will sell one copy to some poor Mac user sucker.

Microsoft Vista Homo Erectus Edition. For all the cavemen that are still stuck in the world of shit we call Microsoft.

The only reason that I would want to run Vista on my 24" iMac is to play Halo 2.

…And to say on my resume that I have Vista experience.

Jan 22, 08 - 12:56 pm Comment from: Jim

Woo hoo. Now I can install Basic manure in my ferrari.

Jan 22, 08 - 01:02 pm Comment from: Bill Gates's Best Friend

The fact is Vista is a pile of trash. The public knows it, and consequently no one wants it.

This is another desperate move to encourage take-up. The Beast's employees have virtually admitted as much themselves:

Microsoft execs admitted today that its decision to open its Windows Vista Home Basic and Home Premium editions up to virtualisation was a "get-out-of-jail" card for the unloved platforms.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/01/22/microsoft_virtualisation_vista/

But the moral is obvious: nobody wants this overpriced and underperforming OS from this disgusting and legally shady monopolist for very good reasons. So unless you need it to run some specific piece of software, you shouldn't waste your money on it. Use something better--or at least cheaper, like Ubuntu.

Jan 22, 08 - 01:22 pm Comment from: Ampar

"The fact is Vista is a pile of trash."

That's an insult to decent, practical landfills worldwide!

wink

Jan 22, 08 - 01:24 pm Comment from: Old Mac Man

Stick it to Microsoft!!!

Use OpenOffice on Windows and NeoOfficeJ on OS X.

It's free!!! Cross platform and compatible with Office files.

Can you beat it? No!

Jan 22, 08 - 01:35 pm Comment from: Gabriel

Microsoft flip-flops?

Do they make you crash when you try to walk in them?

At the very least, they'll make you run slower.

Jan 22, 08 - 01:37 pm Comment from: Tommy Boy

That version of XP with WGA disabled that I downloaded from the torrents works great on my Macbook. That XP license that I got with Office 2004 with Virtual PC was more than enough money to fork over to the evil empire.

Jan 22, 08 - 01:39 pm Comment from: Maconymous

Is this effective immediately with current versions of Home Basic on sale or must we wait for a future SP that will ship on later discs?

Jan 22, 08 - 01:57 pm Comment from: Grigori

No way in hell am I installing Vista of any persuasion.

Desperation,
They've finally come to their senses...

Jan 22, 08 - 01:59 pm Comment from: Zune Tang®

Apple should simply cancel development of the miniscule market share OS X and license the best OS on the planet today: Windows Vista. Then consumers would have the choice of any of the 7 Vista flavors, instead of just 4 with virtualization.

Apple is a hardware company so why should they handicap themselves with OS X? Go with a winner. Go with Vista.

Your potential. Our passion.™

Jan 22, 08 - 02:08 pm Comment from: Ampar

Some funny quotes:

"Vista will be out next year. Vista has never been delayed. I mean, we had earlier conceptualizations, but the thing that is Vista is on its track. "

"Our people, our shareholders, me, Bill Gates, we expect to change the world in every way, to succeed wildly at everything we touch, to have the broadest impact of any company in the world."

"I have never, honestly, thrown a chair in my life."

- Steve Ballmer

Jan 22, 08 - 02:20 pm Comment from: John C. Randolph

Guess they figured out that they need to sell all the vista licenses they can..

-jcr

Jan 22, 08 - 02:25 pm Comment from: Ampar

"to have the broadest impact"

I think Ballmer was referring to the shock wave and impact crater he will make when he eventually falls out of his bell tower.

Jan 22, 08 - 02:43 pm Comment from: some loser

It looks like they're desperate for any sort of shelter. Come on, won't somebody take in a poor, helpless Microsoft Vista Home Less Edition today?

Help your communities by keeping dangerous OS's off the street.

Jan 22, 08 - 03:29 pm Comment from: Darth Avenus

Hmmm, wonder if a certain pending class action lawsuit regarding an issue of what is meant by "Vista capable" and the mucking up of testimony by an MS PR guy has anything to do with this.

Jan 22, 08 - 03:55 pm Comment from: ApplePi

love this video. Bill Gates. I can't imagine Steve ever having a sense of humour like this:
http://on10.net/blogs/larry/Bills-Last-Day-CES-2008-Keynote-Video/Default.aspx

Actually, this is one of the things that I like about Microsoft, as opposed to apple. Apple products work well... but some of the people who use them have such an almighty air about them... not all, you understand... but some take a computer choice as an almost religious decision.

Jan 22, 08 - 04:26 pm Comment from: 84 Mac Guy

The reason for this move by MS is obvious: it opens another market (Mac users) to the wonders of Vista at a reasonable price.

Unfortunately, only two classes of Mac users are likely to buy Vista at any price:
1) Small time software developers using Macs who want to make sure their software runs on Mac, Linux, XP, and Vista.
2) Dolts

Since most dolts are already using Vista on their Dell's, I don't expect an upswing in Microsoft earnings due to this ingenious move.
