Microsoft has no problem granting Windows license to Apple
Friday, March 10, 2006 - 10:14 AM EST

"Microsoft... said it would have no problem granting a Windows licence to Apple, in exactly the same way it currently provides licences to Dell and HP. 'Just like all Microsoft's OEMs, Apple can build industry-standard hardware that's compatible with Windows; Microsoft has an open specification and a process for certifying the hardware,' said a Microsoft spokesman. 'Microsoft would support Apple the same way it supports every other PC manufacturer,'" Stewart Mitchell writes for PC Pro. "However, running Mac OS X on a significantly cheaper PC remains an elusive dream, because Apple 'will not allow Mac OS X to be run on anything other than an Apple Mac', said the company's senior vice president Phil Schiller."

"Nevertheless, it seems certain that hackers will work out a way of doing exactly this, although it won't be easy since Apple's Intel-based Macs use extensible firmware interface (EFI), whereas Microsoft's Windows XP relies on BIOS, and the two aren't natively interoperable," Mitchell writes. "In reality, however, the biggest news for Windows developers is legally porting their software to Apple. CodeWeavers, for example, has expanded its software porting capabilities to include support for Windows-to-Mac - in theory, significantly reducing the time and cost of developing Mac versions of Windows software. 'The shift to Intel chips is good news for Windows developers who, for reasons of time and expense, have never created Mac versions of their key applications,' said CodeWeavers chief executive Jeremy White. 'It's a new opportunity for them.'"

Mitchell writes, "Apple's move to Intel has hardly turned the world of Windows on its head. But it has thrown up new hope for cross-platform development, which in the long term may bring great benefits to PC professionals."

and Apple has no problem declining the offer.

Mar 10, 06 - 10:21 am Comment from: Super Tim

I don't want windows. I have an Apple so that I don't have to use that crap. Best part about Apple isn't the computers, it's the macintosh.

Mar 10, 06 - 10:22 am Comment from: ppc

This is great!
Now we can have all the crappy Windows software in crappy Mac versions. Excelent move to x86!

Mar 10, 06 - 10:26 am Comment from: Rob

I'd rather have the best of both worlds. The best OS (Mac OS X) and the best processors (Intel x86). So I'll keep my iMac Core Duo just as it is now thank you. I don't want or need to install Windows XP or Vista on it.

Mar 10, 06 - 10:26 am Comment from: Emil

hehe licensing win to apple... that would be like licensing a windmill to someone who has learned to manage fusion smile

Mar 10, 06 - 10:27 am Comment from: Petey

LOL!

M$ always amazes me with their bloody check.

WHY THE HELL WOULD APPLE WANT TO LICENCE M$'s OS???

'cough' HERES SOME NEWS FOR YOU M$ - APPLE MAKE THEIR ON OS!
AND IT MAKES YOURS LOOK LIKE A POS.

Mar 10, 06 - 10:28 am Comment from: Noraa Haras

Will Microsoft sell Windows for VMWare users? What about their own VirtualPC. How long is this going to take?

Mar 10, 06 - 10:28 am Comment from: www.switchedtomac.com

Well of course Microsoft doesn't have a problem licensing Windows to Apple. MS wouldn't have a problem licensing Windows to Satan himself.

Why don't these people get it? Apple doesn't care about Windows. They are not trying to be another Dell, Gateway, or run of the mill box builder. Apple is charting their own course!

Besides, why would Apple want to run a cheap knockoff of their own ideas?

Forget Windows people! You don't need it.

And I think I just heard four horsemen thundering over the horizon.

Mar 10, 06 - 10:38 am Comment from: Mr. Peabody

2+ decades in and we still haven't figured out that cheap hardware equals higher operating costs. I know many people who use $299 Dells - I don't know a single person running a $299 Del who hasn't put $1000 worth of hardware upgrades, software upgrades, hardware fixes, and more often than not simply repurchasing completely new hardware, etc., inside of the first 18-24 months.

In my Mac collection exists a Beige G3 and a Strawberry iMac: The Beige G3 gets used almost on a daily basis and was purchased in 1997, I've put $500 into it over the years upgrading the RAM and hard drive. The Stawberry iMac gets used everyday and was purchased in 1998, over the years I've put $150 into it upgrading RAM and recently replacing a fried power supply that got zapped by a major power surge at a summer camp 2 years ago.

Mar 10, 06 - 10:40 am Comment from: Mr. Peabody

I absolutely love the analogy Emil!

Mar 10, 06 - 10:40 am Comment from: DudeMac

Why would anyone buy a Mac to run Windows?! Sounds counter productive if you ask me!!

"However, running Mac OS X on a significantly cheaper PC remains an elusive dream, because Apple 'will not allow Mac OS X to be run on anything other than an Apple Mac', said the company's senior vice president Phil Schiller."

Exactly who's "elusive dream" is this?

Mar 10, 06 - 10:49 am Comment from: JEG

switchedtomac & MacDude

Yes. Apple does need to support Windows if it ever want to be a corporate player. Some software apps and customized internal applications specially those in MS Access are never going to be ported to OSX.

Then again the Steve J. may not care about that market.

Mar 10, 06 - 10:51 am Comment from: macromancer

Sounds like the seeds of desperation to me.

Once a viable Windows app environment becomes available for the Mac, one that doesn't require Windows to run apps, Windows will become irrelevent for a lot of people.

Mar 10, 06 - 10:52 am Comment from: iSteve

I hope this CodeWeavers company will do great business helping software developers weave their code right into OSX. All this attention to Macs running Windows, OSX on standard x86 hardware and such is a good thing. Hopefully these windows-only developers are hearing the buzz and realizing their customers are seeking something different.

Everyone that uses AutoCad, for example, should email the company and tell them they are considering switching to the new Intel Macs and will be looking at alternative CAD software. If they start getting enough calls they might realize they need to port AutoCad to Mac.

G Spank. Will you never learn? Games are for little people. Macs create and do productive things. Games--Phwaaw.

MW--making, as in - making things.

Mar 10, 06 - 11:11 am Comment from: the other Mark

1) This is a great political move by Microsoft. Recent articles have been saying that dual-booting a Mac would help marketshare. From Microsoft's perspective, rather than having access to 95% of the PC market, they could potential capture the other 5% as well. (I know Linux has a % but all Linux machines could run Windows.)

Rant time:
2) Why does everybody say the we need to find ways to increase Apple's marketshare when Apple can't even meet current demand? I can see it now, everybody wants a Mac. Nobody can get one because of limited manufacturing capability. A blackmarket is formed with people standing on the corner with laptops in their overcoats and EBay prices go ballistic. (Psst, hey you, I got a clamshell iBook, runs OS10.4 OK, only $900!!)

3) Why do people insist on playing games on their computers when PS2, Xbox etc. do such a better job? Use your computer for.......work!!!

Mar 10, 06 - 11:23 am Comment from: <3 4 mac

I don't see what the big deal is about going to the corporate market? Apple makes computers for designers, movie makers, creative thinkers. Why bother?????? I think it would just be a big headache for apple. just my thought

Mar 10, 06 - 11:25 am Comment from: Macaday

Simple really:

I want to live in a world of QUALITY. Not in a world of VOLUME.

Try searching for simple WinBox software and you have a million choices - and a million minus ten chances of getting something completely rubbish.

Mar 10, 06 - 11:25 am Comment from: Mr. Peabody

Final thought:

I'm always interested in less expensive hardware and software, but you can keep your "cheaper PC". In fact, in my next message I'll tell you exactly what you can do with it.

Mar 10, 06 - 11:27 am Comment from: davida

Isn't this where Apple says, "Thanks, but no thanks."

a scary thought, perhaps illegal as well, windows with 100% marketshare, makes me nauseous.

Mar 10, 06 - 11:47 am Comment from: ndelc

Well of course MS would license Windows to Apple. Why wouldn't they? A sale is a sale.

Back before Apple bought NeXT, when they were shopping for a new OS to rework into their own, one of the possibilities that they gave consideration to was Windows. Bill Gates pushed very hard for this because the deal he put forth had it that Apple would redesign the GUI to make it more Mac-like, but they would have to also create the GUI for the next version of Windows as well. Perhaps what MS should do is license OS X from Apple, and have them design the next version of Windows. Then it might be worth using! tongue wink

To be fair, Apple does not make Microsoft's OS like like a POS... Microsoft does that.

Still though, it would be nice to be able to use the Windows-only software that I have to use at work, natively on my Mac.

And don't kid yourselves, the dark side also has all the good games.

Sorry, but I am a realist.

I'd rather have Apple put the finishing touches on Copland than use the NT kernel in the underbelly of Mac OS! Besides, Unix (especially BSD flavored) is the best thing going for Mac OS and its future.

DudeMac,

Read it again, I was suggesting (tongue-in-cheek) that Microsoft license the Mac OS, not the other way around.

Mar 10, 06 - 01:21 pm Comment from: Moth Maiden

Emil, a windmill is clean and elegant. Fusion spits out a neutron that makes everything it touches radioactive, not to mention the lovely x-rays and gamma rays and what they can do for your health.

So why would Apple, which has an OS that is clean and elegant, want to license an OS that is so radiologically smelly as to bring the wrath of Godzilla down on one's head (see "Godzilla vs. Megaguirus")?

I wonder how many CEO's play computer games.

Not too many I'll wager, but I'll bet a lot of janitors and big mac flippers do.

I already have Vista and it's not even out yet.

It's called OSX.

MS is just trying to avoid lawsuits when Vista comes out when people see the only thing not copied will be the name.

windoze-blows sucks!!
i would never use windoze ANYWAY even if it was pr-installed on new macs.

some IT drone said 'Pirates of silicon valley' makes jobs seem like a god.

what? who cares?

"Microsoft... said it would have no problem granting a Windows licence to Apple"

OIOW, "Take our software...please!"

NEVER take MS up on a business offer. It'll only help them and will probably kill you.

MS having "no problem" makes the strongest case yet to keep Windows off Apple hardware. If anything let us run Windows apps, but please keep Windows itself away.

Mar 10, 06 - 07:10 pm Comment from: MacRaven

I've met more CAD users that hate PC and wish the could run CAD on a Mac. Just makes more sense anyway.
