Microsoft Corp. today announced record first-quarter revenue of $16.20 billion for the quarter ended Sept. 30, 2010, a 25% increase from the same period of the prior year.
Net income and diluted earnings per share for the quarter were $5.41 billion and $0.62 per share, which represented increases of 51% and 55%, respectively, when compared with the prior year period.
On October 18, 2010, Apple Inc. posted record revenue of $20.34 billion with net quarterly income of $4.31 billion for the company’s fiscal 2010 fourth quarter ended September 25, 2010.
Of course, Apple sells mainly stunning physical products while Microsoft mainly sells licenses for bloatware and obviously cheaply-made game consoles.
MacDailyNews Take: So, how soon until Microsoft can’t match Apple’s quarterly net profit, either? Maybe this one? After all, MS can’t release a new Office every quarter.
Only temporarily increased revenue with the last surge of Windows 7 sales. Apple will continue to climb as Microsoft sinks into the tar pit of it’s own making. A new day is dawning.

Tick, tock, tick, tock.
Tick, tock, tick, tock.
Q1 2011 should see Apple sail past Microsoft’s earnings as Q1 sales are normally up 40% from the previous quarter.

This is excellent! As long as Microsoft’s WIndows and Office products are able to pull them through and give them numbers that look this good, their board of directors will remain asleep, and their CEO will continue to believe they are the greatest.
No reason to rock the boat in Redmond. Keep doing exactly what you’re doing, Microsoft! May Ballmer stay for as long as it takes!

Took the words right out of my mouth.
Although Windows 7 isn’t all that bad really, lots of people are very happy with it. My advice is to install a virtual machine software on your Mac and give it a twirl. Run a copy of Windows 7, keeping a pristine “only updated” version as fall back version just in case.
Microsoft Essentials is free anti-malware. OpenOffice and Firefox is free too. So no extra money is needed. Yet you can run pretty much all of Windows software, except 3D games. For 3D games, your going to need to go the Bootcamp route and expose your whole machine to malware.

You do realize that MS profit margin (and that is really what counts) is WAY better than Apples? Talk about misleading topics …

Microsoft’s bread and butter is software, with low manufacturing costs (packaging and DVDs, if not downloaded outright).
Well OF COURSE their margins are higher than a company whose main product is hardware!

Yes, profits are what count, not margin. However, it’s not just any old profit, it’s FUTURE profit expectations. That’s what a market cap represents, and the market expects Apple’s future profit stream to be more valuable than Microsoft’s. As MDN’s take points out, how long before Apple’s profit exceeds Microsoft’s?

Indeed, they beat Apple by about a billion in terms of profit. How long can this last though? It’s entirely based on Office and Windows.

A rounding error.

M$ are raking it in at the moment because Win7 is now the default install on all new PCs. You can’t get XP licenses anymore. Also if you need office you now have to get the new version. That means businesses have to get new licenses for Office too. They can’t recycle the old license.
