Wednesday, April 15, 2009 - 08:55 AM EDT

Microsoft has released Office 2008 for Mac 12.1.7 update which, according to Microsoft, "contains changes that improve security and performance."

"This update also includes fixes for vulnerabilities that an attacker can use to overwrite the contents of a computer's memory by using malicious code," Microsoft claims.

This patch applies to:
• Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac
• Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Home and Student Edition
• Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Special Media Edition
• Microsoft Entourage 2008 for Mac
• Microsoft Excel 2008 for Mac
• Microsoft PowerPoint 2008 for Mac
• Microsoft Word 2008 for Mac

MacDailyNews Take: Many users think they need Office on their Macs. Most don't. After being called vain, stupid, and wasteful by Microsoft, no one should.

We dumped Microsoft Office years ago for iWork which just keeps getting better and better (instead of dropping features like Office) and we couldn't be happier. We advise our millions of unique monthly visitors to do the same.

Don't just take our word for it, give Apple's free 30-day iWork '09 trial a try and see for yourself.

The irony being below your detailed rant about the lack of need for Office 2008, there's an advertisement right below it detailing how it's NOW ONLY 99.99!
Freakin' Adverts.
O, and first.

I gave Numbers a serious go about a year ago. As much as I wanted it to, Numbers is not ready for prime time.

I'd use iWork except that I got MS Office through the Home Use Program for $20. Okay, I'm cheap. I admit it. I shop at Goodwill stores and garage sales. And...my wife and I don't eat out unless we have a coupon.

Though, I have been disappointed in the Office for Mac.

OpenOffice is free, not as beautifull as iWorks, but it does the job (I have both, iWork and OpenOffice)

Yesterday on 4/14/2009 Microsoft also released their 11.5.4 Update for Office 2004 for Mac.

Peace.

Go to OpenOffice.org to get a free copy of Office (this isn't a trial.. this is a fullblown Office application). You won't have to pay Microsoft nor Apple a dime for it.

Can you see?

Macs are as insecure as Windows...

... thanks to Microsoft!

We can see right through Windows. Sabotage!

Another office suite worth a look: NeoOffice. Version 3.0 was recently released.

Apr 15, 09 - 09:48 am Comment from: shawn

Just uninstalled Office 08 last night...gonna give it a go for a while without it. I tried to reinstall just Word but that ended up being a 500 MB installation...seriously? I work in a Winblows shop so that may present some problems, but, I have Office 07 on Win if need be. Personal life doesn't dictate it I don't think.

Apr 15, 09 - 10:16 am Comment from: MacFhearghaile

It's only critical for those who use it, I use NeoOffice and it works just fine, doing my part to expedite the fall of Microsoft. No microsuck on any of my computers, screw Bill and the boys.

Apr 15, 09 - 10:22 am Comment from: eMax

I might give iWork a try, however Entourage is needed at this point to connect to Exchange environment.

I have been using Neo Office recently and even upgraded to 3.0. Overall its decent, however I have been having issues with formatting when sending docs to people and when uploading to resume sites that accept Microsoft word docs, even if its saved as one. Like one work is tabbed over for no reason, or there is an extra return somewhere. for a resume this is a big deal.

Needless to say, I just went back to using Office 2008 full time.

*word* is tabbed over

Who even uses MS Office if they have a choice?

OpenOffice is the superior Office Application on Windows and Linux.

NeoOffice is better atlernative to MS Office for OSX, and it's free.

Apr 15, 09 - 10:41 am Comment from: Omegalink

MS Word is still the industry standard, whether you like it or not. Many programs (like I'm using Endnote for academic papers) interface with it, something the others are not able to do. Furthermore, while iWorks is relatively easy to use, there are still kinks and bugs in the software. Pages is awfully SLOW (I tried), and we hear the same problem goes for Numbers as well. Someone has said it right that they are not ready for prime time.

Apr 15, 09 - 11:23 am Comment from: Jamie

I hope Mail in Snow Leopard can connect to Exchange clients...

Apr 15, 09 - 11:30 am Comment from: JAYGEE

I have both iWorks and Microsoft Office for Mac 2008. I use word, as I need to send uni work via the internet, so I use Word for compatibility reasons. Saying that, I prefer Word anyway.

Apr 15, 09 - 01:26 pm Comment from: I CAN HAZ OFFIZ?

Much as I want to love iWork the Numbers spreadsheet isn't ready for real work; moreover, the Mac version of Excel isn't either. I have to maintain Boot Camp simply to run the Windows multi-threaded and fully featured version of Excel.

Apr 15, 09 - 01:35 pm Comment from: Anonymous©

@Bruno, if you are seeing a MS Office ad, then you must have recently visited shopped for something related to it, as these are CONTEXTUAL ads! Noone else is seeing MS Office ads.

Apr 15, 09 - 02:04 pm Comment from: DFG

I'd love to dump Office but I need compatibility with a world that uses Word and Excel documents. If only Pages and Numbers would open/edit/close those documents seamlessly in a proper compatibility mode then I could dump Office. Also I have macros, which I'd be fairly happy to rewrite in AppleScript, which IS supported by Office for Mac but probably not by the open software.

Apr 15, 09 - 02:07 pm Comment from: DFG

VERY scarey mention of Office being able to create security problems. This is how I imagine the first vulnerabilities would creep into the Mac world. I'm more concerned that OSX allows this to happen than I am about MS's inevitable incompetence.

@Anonymous
I'm seeing that M$ Office add "NOW ONLY $99.99" right above "Add Your Feedback," and I have not shopped for M$ products in quite some time.

according to Microsoft... Microsoft claims...

Every once in awhile "OfficeMac" has some sort of security issue that demands a update.

It's really a disguise for taking a market share account of the installed base. Notice all versions are affected.

Also to find out how many pirated copies of OfficeMac there are out there.

I don't trust Microsoft since they lied about Vista being the most secure OS in the world.

What explains the worm called Conficker then?

Greetings and Salutations

Some folks have mentioned that they have not been able to install the Office 12.1.8 update. I would like to remind folks of some of the caveats that apply to installing an Office update.

NAME
-----
The Apple Installer technology that we are using requires that the application and the folder they reside in maintain their original names. If you have renamed the applications or the folder they reside in, you'll need to revert it to the original names.

LOCATION
------------
While you drag Office anywhere after an install, the Apple Installer technology will not find a copy of Office that is not on a bootable partition. So if you have Office on a spare partition with no OS on it, you'll need to move it to a partition that has an OS on it.

LANGUAGE
-----------
The updater only works on the language it was intended for; therefore, if you installed Italian Office, the German updater will not work for it. Because we use Apple's Installer the UI will match the UI of your OS so judging which updater you got by the UI of the Installer will not work.

MULTIPLE VERSIONS OF DIFFERENT LANGUAGES
------------------------------------
If you have multiple language versions of Office on your machine, then you'll want to put the one you wish to update in your Application folder; update it; then either rename it or move it out and put the next language in the Application folder.

The Installer will search for Office, and if the first one it finds is a different language than the updater it will not keep searching for copies with the matching language.

RESTARTING YOUR MACHINE
------------------------------------
In some instances, the temporary folder used to install the last update does not get deleted. In these instances, the next Office update cannot install – you can rectify this by restarting your machine.

I hope this covers most everyone's issues, and if not we are watching this forum, so please describe your situation and we will do our best to help you with INSTALLATION issues.
