One of the first I did when I got my new alum iMac was to uninstal Office. I understand that the MacBU is passionate about the Mac, but does anybody really need it now that we have iWork? The only thing I would really want from them is a version of messenger that is equal to the windows version.

Office works just fine for me and it is paid for. I'll switch to iWork when it grows up. It's a great start to a program that is eventually going to blow away Office but it is still lacking some important functionality. Looking forward to switching. Maybe iWork 09 will be the one that is ready for prime time.

Nah, iWork '08 is plenty ready for Home/SOHO use now. Unless you're in a large corporate environment, you don't need Office.

Wow, they have finally gotten around to fixing a bug that has existed since at least 1988! Love that Microsoft.

Since I still use a Pismo 400 MHz, I cannot use iWork; but, hey, I am using OS X 10.4.10 on this 8 year old Mac! Works great, nary a problem, except for a couple of hard drives that died.

I also own Office for Mac, and until iWork (Pages) is TOTALLY compatible in every way with Word for academic work, it seems to me that people in universities will have to stick with Word. iWork must work seamlessly in APA style with Word, or it will not be accepted among universities. I have already been through this with Nisus Writer, Mariner Write, Mellel, etc. for the Mac.

MDN Magic word: "wrong", as it is wrong for Pages not to open/save in Word format without losing ANY of the formatting... I do mean any formatting.

MDN: You need to stop suggesting that iwork is all people need. I agree that the interface is nice and pretty and it does all of the things you need it to.

The bottom line problem is that you have to export everytime you wish to save anything other than a pages doc. Great for on my mac but horrible for sending to clients and things.

If they made the program so it saved back to the format that was opened than it would be a great alternative. Until that time lets get real about it's use in the business environment. Multiple copies of files just to show my apple software is superior seems a little inferior to me.

I'm still running my 8 year old Pismo, also.
Darn sweet machine. Truly built in the Apple tradition. Solid.
And still running extremely well for a G3.

No thanks. With the installation of Leopard on my three Macs they are all MICROSOFT FREE. iWork fills all of my needs and in most ways simpler and better.

And here I thought it was just me. I've gotten really good at the 'save' then 'print' routine with office. Unfortunately for MS, this fix comes a little too late. I have just finished migrating all my important documents to iWork. (I just love the little blue line tells me my items are lined up)

I can't believe Adobe re-wrote and released their entire creative suite in xcode universal binary and Microsoft has yet to even release a public beta of Office 2008. They must be some seriously shitty programmers to be this late to the UB party.

I totally agree with "middilay", in other words the software is usefull for some, not for everybody. This is simply because people have diferent needs, circumstances, etc. In this case middilay has pointed out his situation, which is very similar to mine.
We should not believe that our particular situation is general.

Shouldn't most people who send doc or xls really be sending pdfs? Unless the recipient NEEDS to modify the document. Plus wouldn't this reduce the chance of passing along any nasty Micorsoft macros?

What a bunch of whingers, MDN included. iWork is nowhere near ready for anything serious. My kids use it to do their schoolwork and I will encourage techno-peasents to use iWork as it has a much easier learning curve.

But to suggest that everyone abandon Office in favour of iWork is at best wishful thinking and at worst just really bad advice. MDN of all people needs to be careful about letting a personal vendetta get in the way of handing out solid, useful advice.

Before you go off at me for being an MS apologist keep this in mind - I have sold and serviced Apple products since 1985 and have worked with just about every major app since version 1 (including the original MS Word & Excel developed for the Mac).

If there has been one thing that I have learnt in that time it's that even Apple's own software can be buggy as hell. And when they don't want to fix something they are just as capable of leaving you with your tail hanging in the breeze.

Magic word is appropriately "cases" - iWork cannot be the solution in all cases

You have a low opinion of "some Mac users" MDN if you don't think we can figure out whether we need Office or not.

It's free, it's not Microsoft, and it works pretty well.

I also really like iWork and Numbers is getting better the more we use it. But I agree that iWork probably won't be a full Office replacement for another year or two. The NeoOffice suite is doing pretty well in the interim though. (Does FREE help anyone?) I rarely use Office but I do know there are still features and formatting not yet replaced elsewhere. Of course, most don't need them.

I have no issues with '04 ... maybe because I've never updated it. I mean...consider the source. If it ain't broke....

After version 11.3.3 Word started sneaking around on the network and trying to sniff out other programs. Figured that out around 11.3.5 and searched out the 11.3.3 and reinstalled.

I've not used iWork, but I'm fine with an already paid for Office. But I'll tell you, month by month, year by year I'm weaning myself away from those folks. I expect never to purchase MS again.

Put simply, MS Office is the best suite of office apps.

Anyone know how to get Apple's iWork and Dictionary to support an Australian English dictionary? 'Cos until that happens, though I own iWork 08, I can't use it for work.

I copied this line from the pages help file:

If you'd like more options, including the ability to choose different dictionaries, choose Edit > Spelling > Spelling to open the Mac OS X Spelling window.

you could always just add the english words to the spellcheck.
