Well.

I installed Silverlight during the Olympics.

Since then, I have not come across any other web page or other content that uses it. Even Microsoft's own Mojave experiment runs flash.

Go figure.

I'm actually hoping it takes off. Here in the UK M$ got to the broadcasters before the iTMS took off, meaning all the Web streams for TV content (with the notable exception of the BBC) are saddled with Windows DRM. ITV, one of the main commercial providers, has already moved it's TV catchup service onto Silverlight and it works fine on the Mac. Other sites powered under the same provider could also do so very easily.

And that, most importantly, includes the Football League, meaning I would finally be able to listen to live County games again rather than having to follow the scorelines via Sky Sports News.

By one in four consumers has access to a computer running Silverlight they mean if you can get to a library or catch a plane to end up in Redmond where, after you get through security, you can go play with a Dell running XP and Silverblight

Is it less of a bloated and inefficient mess than Flash? If so, I'm all for it, MS or no. I'm getting a little tired of flash ads taking up a processing core or two just for the heck of it.

as noted above, ITV's catchup service uses Silverlight. However my experience is far from good: commercials either don't load, repeat unnecessarily, or the programme itself goes to commercials at random, if it loads at all. This may not be the fault of Microsoft, rather the ineptitude of it.com's programmers, but I prefer to blame MS It's also a massive processor hog, giving about 4 frames a second on a 1.25ghz iMac, whereas the BBC's iPlayer is flawless.

Microsoft's half-hearted approach at competing with Adobe's Flash, but since Microsoft only supports 1 1/2 platforms (Windows and sometimes Mac), it will have no effect on Flash's dominance. The shills who will support Silverlight will be the shortsighted developers who have not learned that the web was meant to be open and seamlessly compatible across multiple platforms and the users who don't know any better!

One day Silverlight will be as good as flash.

About the same time that Flash is rendered obsolete.

Actually, the NBCOlympics.com website was hodgepodge of technologies. It had a powered by Sun logo on it. It ran Flash. The only thing that was using Silverlight were the actual videos themselves.

I don't know much about Silverlight. I am not a fan of Flash. If Silverlight is geared more towards an efficient player than Flash, then I'd use it. Just having a Flash alternative may force Adobe to improve it. It is just to much of a resource hog for playing simple little videos and animations. Surely someone out there has a better product.
