Microsoft to unveil Apple MobileMe, iTunes App Store knockoffs next month
Tuesday, January 20, 2009 - 09:12 AM EDT

"Microsoft is planning to unveil three new mobile services at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona next month. The software giant is aiming to move your mobile data into the cloud and rival Apple's MobileMe service," Tom Warren reports for Neowin.

"According to sources close to Microsoft, the company has been working on products codenamed SkyBox, SkyLine and SkyMarket," Warren reports. "The final offerings are likely to be named under the Windows Live branding."

SkyBox is a service for users to sync a phone's information with the web... similar to Apple's MobileMe

• SkyLine is like "SkyBox," but aimed at small businesses instead

• SkyMarket is the codename for Microsoft's mobile marketplace for Windows Mobile devices... similar to Apple's App Store

Warren reports, "Microsoft is also expected to unveil Windows Mobile 6.5 at the MWC."

MacDailyNews Take: Oh-so-predictable. We hear Microsoft will also debut a new company slogan: Think Apple.*

now that we know that Microsoft is behind skynet, humanity is saved by bugs!

Jan 20, 09 - 10:20 am Comment from: Jarrett

That is one hell a slogan!

Jan 20, 09 - 10:24 am Comment from: ApplePi

Well Apple is having enough trouble with it, is it possible that Micro$$ will even be able to get it off the ground?

Jan 20, 09 - 10:24 am Comment from: ElderNorm

MDN, you forgot to add. "Microsoft is planning to unveil three new mobile services at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona next month. ".... and the crowd goes wild with excitement. grin

"Oh the humanity of it....... "

Just a thought. LOL

As much as people criticise the names for things that Apple chooses, this proves that Microsoft is worse. Tacky sci-fi and sports references is al they can come up with?

I've always wondered what the heck Windows "Live" is also. It reeks of the practice of just tacking an exciting sounding word on the end of an otherwise dull one. It also makes no sense in that there are presumably no "dead" Windows anywhere. It's a show business metaphor at best and out of place in that sense as well.

Jan 20, 09 - 10:30 am Comment from: DanielM

I am using MobileMe.

It works beautifully and with iWorks 09 and iWork.com it is even better.

Jan 20, 09 - 10:35 am Comment from: Court Jester

How amazingly original thinking by MS.

Jan 20, 09 - 10:38 am Comment from: HuskerMac

Why doesn't Microsoft concentrate on something they do well? Wait, never mind.

Jan 20, 09 - 10:39 am Comment from: iWill

SkyJack is a new MS service where your data is high-jacked, sent to a cloud and held for ransom. The amount of ransom demanded to free your data, depends on the value of the data itself. Most data will be safely held for just pennies on the dollar. Thanks Microsoft!

Jan 20, 09 - 10:42 am Comment from: AlanAudio

Rupert Murdoch's Sky television company has been using the term Sky Box for many years.

It could get very messy if Microsoft and Sky television end up arguing in court.

Jan 20, 09 - 10:54 am Comment from: BS Detector - MDN again being retarded

Doesn't anyone realize that Apple copied Microsoft first on mobileme? Wasn't apple's original slogan "Exchange for the rest of us"? So Microsoft had exchange for a few years, then apple comes out with mobileme which is the same thing, but they didn't copy it, of course. What bullshit!

There's no doubt miscrosoft copies a lot of things from apple, but this? You guys all are sheep.

Jan 20, 09 - 11:03 am Comment from: Macaday

I agree with AlanAudio that Microsoft will be getting an injunction from Rupert Murdoch any day now.

Don't they deserve it.

Perhaps they can rename it the GraveBox..

I can't tell you how many identities will be compromised with Microsoft's cloud. and it's enough that the US is in such a mess now, wait til this is released...

Jan 20, 09 - 11:14 am Comment from: John Gee

That is funny. Another one for my back pocket: Microsoft says Think Apple.

Love it.

Virus distribution via the cloud.

Jan 20, 09 - 11:21 am Comment from: MacAdvocate

I think I just got AirSick. Isn't SkyMarket in the seatback bags on the back of Delta flights? Seriously, morons, do you have any sense of your market - at all?!

Jan 20, 09 - 11:23 am Comment from: Mark S.

iSteve, good one!

Jan 20, 09 - 11:37 am Comment from: qka

What does Rupert Murdoch have to say about all this Sky stuff?

(Rupert Murdoch / News Corp. owns Sky News and a bunch of other satellite/cable TV properties named Sky ______. They just aren't in the US.)

Jan 20, 09 - 11:39 am Comment from: Spark

While I don't think BS Detector goes far enough back to determine who first started copying who, I do agree that it is ridiculous to criticize MS for attempting this move. As lame and unreliable as it most likely will be, what else can they do? In reality, the shear numbers of non-Apple phones and computers pretty much assure that Skybox will outsell Mobileme regardless of comparative quality.

Jan 20, 09 - 11:41 am Comment from: qka

@ AlanAudio

Sorry mate, didn't see your post.

Great minds think alike, eh?

at BS Detector

I'm glad someone else pointed out that MM's original slogan admits it ripped of MS. I'm no MS fan, but I do give them credit for pioneering Exchange. It also works reliably which is something I still can't say for MM all the time.

Jan 20, 09 - 11:50 am Comment from: MacRaven

Ahhhh....more Copy Crap from the Copy Cats.

Jan 20, 09 - 11:57 am Comment from: Nutcracker

Sooo....

Microsoft 'copies' (rips-off) an Apple concept... So what's new???

Microshaft has been doing that for 25 years.

Nothing new here.. move along

Jan 20, 09 - 12:07 pm Comment from: AlanAudio

@qka

No probs.

In many cases, it's possible to argue that two companies using similar names sell products or services that are quite different and can't be confused. But Sky the broadcaster already sells internet services with their Sky Boxes, so there's a whole can of worms that's just waiting to be opened and doubtless some rich pickings for some already rich lawyers,

Jan 20, 09 - 12:33 pm Comment from: Derek in Milan

Microsoft Exchange is unreliable.
Apple's MobileMe is 100% reliable.

In my opinion.

Jan 20, 09 - 12:39 pm Comment from: qmt49

Why are they doing this? They already have Live Mesh and Live Sync, so where is the need for ANOTHER synchronisation solution? Words utterly fail me.

@qka: Rupert Murdoch owns every single media outlet in the UK. He's Big Brother wink

Jan 20, 09 - 12:41 pm Comment from: Danno Bonano

I always thought Apple needed a reference point for what not to do. Glad SkyPee is coming out. Hmmmm is that a subtle reference to Microsoft buying Skype?

Jan 20, 09 - 02:03 pm Comment from: @ Derek in Milan

Huh? I have used exchange for years and it has been extremely reliable. MM seems to work pretty well, but it is too limited in my view. I can choose to use just about any mobile device and MY email address with exchange. Not so much with MM. If you are an apple only person, then MM is great. But if you want choice, MM is terrible.

Jan 20, 09 - 03:40 pm Comment from: wjw1

the SMARTEST thing Microsoft could possibly do is re-align their (soon to be 5000 layoffs) employees with the Mac Business unit and start writing apps for the iPhone!

Jan 20, 09 - 05:09 pm Comment from: ken1w

Microsoft, huh? So it's pretty easy to use...?

Jan 20, 09 - 05:37 pm Comment from: thethirdshoe

I predict that Microsoft will get lots of people to trust Microsoft with their really important data. After a couple of years, the Microsoft systems will all crash due to some stupid "upgrading" mistake causing a chain reaction / snow ball effect that brings it all down. Everyone using it will be hosed.

Told you so. cool hmm

Jan 20, 09 - 07:25 pm Comment from: xAirbusDriver

Uhmn...did I just make the words "code name" appear on-screen? Maybe so, and I think the "cloud" is just as concrete! Maybe in 10 years, some company will trust its data to some nebulous 'cloud' but I can't imagine anyone, actually allowing a third-party, with no physical location and no face-to-face contact to 'maintain' their critical data (and what other kind is there?)! Frankly, I'm keeping my investment in gas lanterns, this electricity fad is bound to blow over soon...

Jan 20, 09 - 08:26 pm Comment from: ken1w

@ thethirdshoe

> Everyone using it will be hosed.

Microsoft couldn't even get their Zunes to properly account for the 2008 leap year. What do you expect...?

@ MDN

"We hear Microsoft will also debut a new company slogan: Think Apple.*"

No, no, no. You're close, but my reliable sources tell me it's gonna be:

"Microsoft. Think Not-The-Same."

Jan 21, 09 - 01:49 am Comment from: redc

I'm betting this will cost SkyHigh
