Microsoft uses vomit to market Internet Explorer 8 (with video)
Thursday, July 02, 2009 - 09:12 AM EST

Make sure you haven't just eaten and then check out this new online ad for Internet Explorer 8 from Microsoft:

Direct link via YouTube here.

Chris Matyszczyk reports for CNET, "This work is not, as some have surmised, the work of Crispin Porter + Bogusky, the agency responsible for both the 'I'm a PC' and Gates-Seinfeld campaigns. It is the brainchild of Bradley and Montgomery, the folks that brought you the Mojave Experiment."

"The vomit ad is one of a series, all featuring actor Dean Cain," Matyszczyk reports. "The series is taglined 'Browse Better.'"

They know their demographic.

Jul 02, 09 - 08:33 am Comment from: MacD

How come that Microsoft's Ads just keep getting more and more stupid?

Jul 02, 09 - 08:39 am Comment from: Wha

WTF Microsoft?

Next they will have someone with indigestion problems. The tagline will be:

"Windows 7: Shitting on your baby"

Jul 02, 09 - 08:44 am Comment from: silverwarloc

if you look at the video closely, dean cain is getting old and fat.

Jul 02, 09 - 08:51 am Comment from: Wade Smith

i blame Obama.

Jul 02, 09 - 08:51 am Comment from: eMax

sorry dean, you look like crap. those superman days are far behind you.

Jul 02, 09 - 08:56 am Comment from: deepdish

dumbest marketing idea ever. I guess they think it will be viral.

Jul 02, 09 - 08:57 am Comment from: DD from Belgium

...OMGTAS: Oh My God, This Ad Stinks (or other appropriate S-words there...

They can't be serious, come on...

Jul 02, 09 - 09:03 am Comment from: Wings2Sky

I can't believe that this is real...
Oh, and since it appears that the guy just left the web site up so IE8 wouldn't help IMstupid.
And of course, Safari has had private browsing for how long now?

Jul 02, 09 - 09:06 am Comment from: Road Warrior

Wow, no one can complain about truth in advertising when it comes to Microsoft. That upchuck feeling is pretty close to what I feel when I use one of their products.

Jul 02, 09 - 09:07 am Comment from: BillH

"The only problem with Microsoft is they just have no taste. They have absolutely no taste. And I don't mean that in a small way, I mean that in a big way, in the sense that they don't think of original ideas, and they don't bring much culture into their products."

Steve Jobs

Jul 02, 09 - 09:08 am Comment from: Brilliant Sandwich

Was it really necessary to use such real looking puke? Let the fake commercials making fun of this stupid ad campaign begin. Bad publicity is good publicity as far as Microsoft is concerned.

Jul 02, 09 - 09:12 am Comment from: almux

Balmer's idea... surely.
not only its sight gives desire for vomitting, but this guy uses it to carry M$'s image!

Oh! So nice... isn't it? lol

Jul 02, 09 - 09:15 am Comment from: almux

Many will pursue M$ for having made them vomit all over their rooms!
He! He! Good idea for such a lawyers's land!!!!!

Jul 02, 09 - 09:23 am Comment from: aka Christian

Okay, I must be a sick, twisted fsck, because I thought this was hilarious. What do I know? I laugh myself silly reading the Onion every week at my local pub.

Will this work? I don't think so. I mean, what demographic are they trying to reach here? Middle-age homeowners? They're going to be repulsed. And Dean does look pretty heavy, but in his Superman days, he was restricted to a diet of just cooked chicken and vegetables while working out regularly. Who wants to live like that forever?

Jul 02, 09 - 09:28 am Comment from: Demon

MS should rebrand IE to Bing Explorer or VC for Vomit Comet (NASA may it Trademarked).

Jul 02, 09 - 09:28 am Comment from: MrMcLargeHuge

I just installed IE8 on my fresh-install XP box at work. It crashes instantly every single time I try to open it. So that's my experience with IE8. Browse better indeed.

Jul 02, 09 - 09:31 am Comment from: MrMcLargeHuge

Might I mention that I'm an IT professional as well. My job is based around troubleshooting and repair.

Jul 02, 09 - 09:32 am Comment from: NCIceman

Yuck, I can't believe they really made that ad.
Truly tasteless (zing!).

Jul 02, 09 - 09:59 am Comment from: pxlmixer

WINBLOWS!!!!

A truly horrible ad.

Jul 02, 09 - 10:16 am Comment from: iWill

How wretched. I threw up a little in my mouth from witnessing that spectacle of no-brow humor.

Jul 02, 09 - 10:23 am Comment from: Theloniousmac

Hmmm...

A reporter named Matyszczyk reporting on Superman? isn't that one of Superman's enemies? Mr. Matyszczyk?

Or was that Mxyzptlk?

In all seriousness this add leapfrogs anything Apple has done and penetrates the current gestalt of the youth market.

It's the kind of thing that will spread virally and play over and over on G4 Attack of The Show. This is the crap young adolescent males love.

Jul 02, 09 - 10:28 am Comment from: Regular Reader

Is THAT Zune Tang in the video??? Microsoft class all the way!

Jul 02, 09 - 10:29 am Comment from: Majikthize

Wow. Just wow. Are they going for the Beavis & Butthead demographic - puke is cool? Soooooo '90s. Just like their software.

Jul 02, 09 - 10:46 am Comment from: Jubei

She barfed and it reminded me of all the crappy Microsoft products out there. So yeah the ad works. grin

Jul 02, 09 - 10:50 am Comment from: disposableidentity

I thought this was a fan-generated "spec" ad - until I realized this was Dean Cain. And I thought Microsoft had nowhere to go but "up" with it's advertising efforts.

Jul 02, 09 - 10:57 am Comment from: Quad Core

I thought it was humorous. Except, hat I really don't like the phrase 'Oh, My God'

Jul 02, 09 - 11:08 am Comment from: Sir Gill Bates

No wonder this guy has to resort to porn on the internet.
She apparently doesn't have the stomach for ... red face

Jul 02, 09 - 11:23 am Comment from: jon1

I am consistently amazed at how completely retarded MSFT is.
I blame Sarah Palin

Jul 02, 09 - 12:08 pm Comment from: I am me

Okay. That's enough.

Just close up your little shop, and give the money back to the shareholders.

FFS Ballmer, how old are you?

Jul 02, 09 - 12:35 pm Comment from: Falkirk

I've seen the entire series and the ads are really quite clever. The sycophants who read MDN (and I'll have to include myself) just can't give Microsoft credit for anything. If these ads had been done by Apple we'd all be talking about how "hip" (how old AM I?) and funny they were.

Give the Devil his due.

Jul 02, 09 - 12:59 pm Comment from: this guy

i lol'd

Jul 02, 09 - 01:05 pm Comment from: Nutcracker

OMFG...

What a *lame* a$$ commercial...

I hope M$ has its lawyers paid up...

the 'Wow starts now???'

idiots.

Jul 02, 09 - 01:10 pm Comment from: Missy Pants

Look at the name on the box of cereal on the table.

At least there's one, small clever element to this ad.

Jul 02, 09 - 01:17 pm Comment from: db

@Falkirk

"If these ads had been done by Apple we'd all be talking about how "hip" (how old AM I?) and funny they were."

That's where you're wrong. Apple has been doing commercials for years, and the "I'm a Mac" commercials could have had lots of chances to go low brow. Instead, they take the high road and don't even attack Microsoft that hard even though they could have easily stooped that low.

Personally, I thought this ad was juvenile, poorly made, and I really thought it was an SNL, MadTV, or even a Bill Maher show's joke ad where Dean Cain was guest host. I'm appalled that it's real. Microsoft has considered itself to be a "business" software, but they throw out jokes that would make 13-year-old boys snicker (and I should know, I'm a junior high school teacher).

Smart and witty should be the way to go, not crude and vulgar. As far as I'm concerned, they've sunk to a new low (and who knew *that* was possible). This is not hip. It's sad and desperate.

Jul 02, 09 - 01:17 pm Comment from: Scot Murphy

WTF were they thinking?!

Were they trying to out-hip Apple by going for the teenaged male demo? That was pointless, because if they're going for the gamer demo, they've either already got it or it's lost to PS3 and Wii. Is there a woman of any age above an IQ of 80, or who doesn't live in a trailer park and watch UFC, who's going to think this is funny? Is it going to reach the secretly-arrested-in-adolescence middle-aged-male demo? Who?

Who was the idiot that greenlighted this ad?!

Jul 02, 09 - 01:37 pm Comment from: British Mac Head

It's about as classy as this Microsoft ad

Jul 02, 09 - 01:41 pm Comment from: zek

""This work is not, as some have surmised," ... hehe, these a$$holes think ads are works of art! Pathetic.

Jul 02, 09 - 01:43 pm Comment from: KingMel

Hey! I'm eating lunch. Don't talk about Microsoft and make me nauseous!

Jul 02, 09 - 02:16 pm Comment from: ndelc

"Balmer's idea... surely."

That's exactly what I thought.

Jul 02, 09 - 02:53 pm Comment from: MrMcLargeHuge

@Quad Core

Amen to that.

Jul 02, 09 - 04:06 pm Comment from: Dave H

So the point of this is that IE8 has private browsing? Erm...isn't that like old news for all their competitors?

WTF is wrong with M$? Is this really the best they can do?

50% browser market share by Christmas...

Jul 02, 09 - 04:08 pm Comment from: Dave H

Oh and BTW, what's going on with the Net Applications reports this month? It's almost as if they're triple counting the numbers ahead of announcing something big. Glass ceiling finally breached?

Jul 02, 09 - 05:28 pm Comment from: Altivec Guru

Microsoft = Hairy Vaginas With Herpes (Dot Com)

Jul 02, 09 - 06:53 pm Comment from: Wings2Sky

@Falkirk

"If these ads had been done by Apple we'd all be talking about how "hip" (how old AM I?) and funny they were."

I just don't think so. MDN might, I guess. But I really think and hope that the Apple community at large would be offended by this.

But, I thank my lucky stars that we will never be able to test that theory!!! The day Apple has to put out a commercial like this will be the day websites like this one will start putting "beleaguered" in front of "Apple"!

Jul 02, 09 - 07:20 pm Comment from: ken1w

The woman actually puked because she is a Mac user and that laptop had Windows 7 Beta running IE8. That combination was simply too much...

Jul 03, 09 - 08:09 am Comment from: Bartsimpsonhead

Wow! Isn't Dean Cane getting fat these days. Looks like he's been eating too much of the SuperHam lately...

Jul 03, 09 - 08:11 am Comment from: GP

.

Wade Smith is correct.

Jul 03, 09 - 09:05 am Comment from: Mr. Reeee

Classy.

Jul 03, 09 - 01:34 pm Comment from: Microsoft's obviously a click whore just like that

As bad as the ad is, it has been getting some significant attention.

Microsoft knows that putting such disgusting garbage advertising on line will garner some attention... and the buzz it creates will get them plenty of click throughs - all the more if they officially "pull it".

It is notoriously hard (impossible actually) to "pull" something off the 'net once it has been published. Microsoft knows this.. and is looking forward to grabbing eyeballs without even having to provide the bandwidth for people to view it.. Youtube and others take the bandwidth hit.
