Microsoft Windows, Internet Explorer products reflect arrogance, sloppiness

“The pro-Macintosh, anti-Windows movement has been on a low boil for years, but now it seems to be building momentum. The reputation of Apple Computer, which makes Macs, is better than ever. The Apple PowerBook notebook and iMac desktop have been very well-received, and the iPod portable music player is a pop culture phenomenon,” Ian Katz writes for The South Florida Sun-Sentinel in his article, “Mac crowd bashes Windows.”

“But the reason behind the growing support for Macs has less to do with Apple than with the failure of Microsoft’s Windows operating system and Internet Explorer browser. Microsoft releases security patches for Windows or Internet Explorer at http://www.microsoft.com/security on a nearly weekly basis. Though the updates can be programmed to install themselves automatically, the steady drumbeat of bad security news from Microsoft wears on many users,” Katz writes. “Increasingly, Microsoft’s products seem to reflect the arrogance and sloppiness that comes with being a virtual monopoly.”

  1. Virtual Monopoly? Isn’t it for real or what?

    By the other hand:

“But the reason behind the growing support for Macs has less to do with Apple than with the failure of Microsoft’s Windows operating system and Internet Explorer browser.”

People is looking for a better platform, getting away from Microsft’s. If they are looking to Apple, the growing on Mac sales is because they find that better and more secure platfrom, so, it has to do with Apple and the Mac.

  2. M$ should have been broken up, but because the spooks were getting such good intelligence from Windows insecurities they pulled strings in the Justic Department.

When the rest of the world swiches to Linux, Microsoft won’t be nothing but a red headed stepchild.

Apple will still be around and making money.

  3. The arrogance of Microsoft is only eclipsed by the ignorance of the users of their software products.

A switch to the Mac, Linux, Open Office or even Firefox is just beyond their comprehension.

  4. Yesterday I visited an Apple-club-day; were I was told that 80% of the iPod sales are to PC-users from wich 50 did/does not know that Apple actually is a computer company….. and making Macintosh !

  5. John C, “what amazes me.
Even when I tell people that Apple make the iPod, they look blank!” ? Are you for real? That is sad, when I get a question about Macs or iPods it is usually about ease of use and what can be uploaded to it or how. But I do find it interesting how more people are asking me about Macs, especially my parents friends. The look of amazement washes over their faces as I tell them about my lack of problems. Hardly ever rebooting except after a software update, or no viruses or adware. Come the holidays I have several appointments to help people with buying decisions. Its a good deal when you get your parents started on iPods, they tell and show all their friends.

  6. “But the reason behind the growing support for Macs has less to do with Apple than with the failure of Microsoft’s Windows operating system and Internet Explorer browser.”

Actually, it is the failure of Windows at the SAME TIME Apple has the best rock soled kick ass OS ever! Easiest, stable, secure, and powerful! The iMac, iPod, G5, and iLife are icing in the cake.

  7. i think people look blank when the find out apple makes ipod is because they could care less.
so what if apple makes ipod?
if i told someone that nike makes golf clubs would that impress somebody looking for a pair of shoes???

  8. One of the worst things I see “tech journalists” do is say that there is such and such trojan that if you click on a link, it downloads to your computer and initiates blah blah.

What they fail to leave out 90% of the time is that it is not EVERY computer or browser affected, ONLY IE on a PC.

  9. of course, the tragedy is that mac users love using their computers, and maybe even, in a broader scope–technology.

windows users get off as soon as they can, resent the minefield called Windows, and grow suspicious of technology. Of course.

  10. Many think apple will one day rule the world. Not true. Now before you all flame me. I believe that the swing is coming back to Apple, and Linux, but the issue has to do with value. It will be many years until the swing comes back, but with Apple and MS and all the Linux versions, I personally believe that the best anyonw will do is find a 33:33:33 average between all.

Even If Apple made it to 30%, it would be about 10 times as large its current distribution. Imagine if Apple made 10% of the market, at 3 times its current distribution they would require many of the worlds techs to know Apple.

It would make is so much easier for me to make more money since I support Windows for a living, and own only Apple and know hwo to support it as well.

Until IT managers lose the power of selecting new technologies and we get real sales to CEOs and CIOs of corporations to understand ROI with Apple solutions, its going to be a tough road.

I just watched the company I work for Pay 12K for a 100GB Server to be one of the base servers for MS Active Directory, not including the Enterprise license for usage, and they still cannot manage to find enough HD space, when they could have spent 15K for a Mac Raid with 5.6TB of storage unlimited licensing, and a Server to admin it.

  11. “The iPod has the Apple logo on it. How dumb are these people.”

You are assuming that people know what the Apple logo stands for.

Consider that it may be that all the Apple logo means to them is the maker of the iPod.

And that is because Apple has done a poor job for years telling people who they are and what they do. They are known mostly as the makers of the iPod because that is the image that Apple has cultivated.

The answer is just that simple, and those of you who reply that there is some “grand master plan” based upon the magical theory that somehow less advertising leads to greater sales: don’t bother.

If I make a product to sell and no one knows about it, it will not sell.

I know that is too simple for some people but the greatest truths are often the simplest ones.

In 1988, I only found out about the Mac because of a sharp salesperson working in a mostly PC store. She analyzed my needs and said,” You need to buy a Mac.”

That sale happened, without any help from Apple to her, and here I am still buying Macs nearly 20 years later. Of course, I buy them because of the excellence of the product, but the world would be a better place if Apple would just tell people what they produce instead of leaving them to find out about it on their own.

  12. Am i the only one who remembers apple computer ads not even 4 years ago. There was an add for the last edition iMac (the lamp shade model) and there were ads for iMovie when it first came out. They had the one actor from the Jurassic Park movies do them. But, was that a dream? I can’t tell because there hasn’t been another one since. I mean, there are of course the iPod commercials and stuff, but I havn’t even seen a magazine add for the new iMac or PowerMac or even the more consumer friendly eMac. Why did the ditch the campaign? I think its time to rebuild it.

  13. Too few people know the Mac still exists, or that you can run MS Office on it, or that MS doesn’t own Apple.

The trouble is, even if people did suddenly become interested in the Mac, Apple wouldn’t be able to cope with the demand. They’re having enough trouble supplying 2% of the market.

  14. ” The trouble is, even if people did suddenly become interested in the Mac, Apple wouldn’t be able to cope with the demand. They’re having enough trouble supplying 2% of the market.”

I don’t buy that one either.

If there is sufficient reason to believe that sales of the G5 will increase by 10%, or 50%, or 300%, then IBM can and will build another production line or and another plant if it seems economically viable.

There is no natural reason why that would not happen. Maybe an unnatural reason, like an agreement between Bill and Steve to divide the market. I don’t know, I am not a big fan of conspiracy theories because they are impossible to keep hidden for any length of time because someone ALWAYS spills the beans. That is just human nature.

Apple is capable of managing its part of the production and distribution equation. Hire the people who know how to do it. They are out there.

There just has to be the will and motivation to do it on the part of Apple management, and I suspect that is where the real problem is.

  15. I remember those ads DanK. However, I have seen print ads for the iMac G5, Power Mac G5, Final Cut Pro, and PowerBooks within the past year- year 1/2.

I do agree, though. Apple should work to build a new series of ad campaigns for the Macintosh as well as OS X. may (hopefully) we’ll see something when Tiger comes out. If the banners at WWDC ’04 are anything to go by, they would be an awesome series of commercials.

  16. ” The trouble is, even if people did suddenly become interested in the Mac, Apple wouldn’t be able to cope with the demand. They’re having enough trouble supplying 2% of the market.”

True.. the only reason the other guys can do it is that they’re all supplying the same open architectured platform…

It’s not like Dell is supply 98% of the worlds computers.. it’s like 18%.. the Windows Platorm, however, is pushed by 10-15 sizeable companies.. so Apple trying to compete would have to be the size of Dell, just to create a significant minority (10-15% marketshare)

For those watching at home, Dell is approaching $60 Billion in revenues.. while Apple is at about $12 billion

  17. You guys here always assume windows people are so stupid since they don’t get a mac. Most of you people have nothing else to do but bash us.I really find that offensive.Tons that use windows aren’t stupid at all.How do YOU have any idea that this stuff is “beyond their comprehension”?You don’t.Some windows users may be happy with their PC’s.They have plenty of reasons to be happy about it.Some also may not have enough to buy a new mac.Alot of windows users only want new stuff, just like most of you. That’s my 2 cents.

  18. unknown: not entirely true. It is unfortunate that the majority of Windows users that take time to write on Mac forums are trolls, show an abysmal ignorance of everything Apple and – consequently – are usually flamed.

Anyway, by the number of switchers that I recently have met (and growing) it looks that the number of Windows users for whom OS X and Apple quality and features are “beyond their comprehension” is getting smaller and smaller.

In the end there will remain trolls, those who *still* believe they cannot afford a Mac, and Windows diehard that blatantly tell you straight in the face “all computers have their share of viruses. If only few” – they still say ‘few’ – “are on the Mac is because you guys are insignificant”. So, unknown, to end this tirade, you should be offended more from these kind of Wintel users than from any Mac user that gets outraged because of the same users.

  19. PS
welcome to the forum. I hope you enjoy it and maybe get to know Macs (and its users) a bit better. Who knows, maybe a troll will show you directly what kind of characterization they spread all over you Wintel users.

  20. ” I hope you enjoy it and maybe get to know Macs (and its users)”

Unknown…..Getting to know Macs is easy…Getting to know its users is like Pissing in the Wind..

Use what you want…They all do the same thing anyways…
