Microsoft Windows Vista Beta running on Apple Intel-based Mac

“A few weeks ago we launched our tongue-in-cheek contest to dual boot Windows Vista on an Intel Mac… but little did we know Apple was planning on dropping the Boot Camp news a few days later,” OSx86 Project reports. “Nevertheless, Vista has proved a challenge even with Boot Camp, so we were fairly excited when AirmanPika let us know about his success with installing and booting Vista. Although several people have gotten the installer to work, AirmanPika is one of the first to get Vista up and running – and the first we’re aware of to give some screenshots. The installation isn’t without its glitches yet – and you have to delete your OS X partition – but it’s a start.”

  1. Why does everyone seem so excited about running Windows on a Mac? I know it’s convenient to have both on one system, but this isn’t the greatest thing since sliced bread, it’s a load of cow dung that should be handled as such.

  2. Delete OS X partition? For me that totally kills the fun. You could just buy some generic hardware similar to the imac and get it to run vista. I want to get them running on the same machine because I know that neither apple nor MS wants me to. The hacker movement is about getting what you want even if its not what the manufacturer had in mind.

  3. Enter stage left MacDude:

“You will all be running Vista, OS X is dead, Bill Gates for President, Steve Ballmer for Defense, TCP will own everything blah blah blah…”

(gets booed off stage, then raptuous applause for Steve ‘Monkey Boy’ Ballmer and his sweaty palm routine).

  4. Thanks RS, I forgot about that. If you have to get rid of OS X to install Windows, than it’s not worth it

    It’s been dual-booted.

No need to erase OS X.

Check digg.. this is old news.. Just to show that MS has been trying to ‘screw’ Apple (and WIn users) by not getting with EFI

    And that didnt work..

  5. You know guys, you all critizied MacDude, but he’s been absolutely right.

“You will all be running Vista…”

is not a unreasonable assesment of the future situation, after all I find it incredibly hard to beleive that once a Mac user gets up to speed on OS X that he or she wouldn’t install Vista to get the advantage of all the software.

Eventually instead of booting OS X , people will be booting more and more into Vista. People will get used to it, it will be much more secure than before.

Maybe that’s why “Boot Camp” is called “Boot Camp”

It’s Apple’s way of telling us the end is near for OS X.

It’s going to be a brave new Vista world next year. Either be part of it, or be left behind.

  6. Morty, you’re a short sighted dork!

I’ve been MS free for three years. Zero MS products here and I’m managing a half million dollars of AV installation projects just fine without any of that dog shit crapware on any of my Macs.

    I don’t play games. I don’t do Office. I don’t NEED anything MS!

    MS is the virus!

  7. it will be much more secure than before

    That wouldn’t take much.

Besides, have you seen the final, release-version Vista, or are just blowing out your ass?

Nobody knows what the final Vista will be like. Not even MS.

The MS faithful are like fanboys of a dying car company: “Yes the current product line stinks, but you just watch! The new models will be out hopefully soon and we just know everybody will want one!”. Yawn.

When your brave new world dawns and Vista ships, let us know. For the rest of us Mac OS X is here today. Talk about being left behind…

  8. Morty. Are you nuts? “or be left behind”??? At best most Mac users would only boot into XP+ just to check out a game or a specialty software. Most current Mac users and half of new users will not be using XP or Vista on a regular basis (or at all). OS X will always be superior to XP+ and people are realizing that.

  9. Wow, such a violent crowd.

But just think. What does OS X have over XP right now?

    Looks and security, right?

What does XP have over OS X?

    “Developers, Developers, Developers” – MonkeyBoy

Now suppose M$ has gotten the message, it needs to dress up Windows and take care of the security issue.

So far the looks of VIsta is pretty good, foreign looking, but nice.

Also from what I read is Vista will be way more secure then present OS X is.

So that takes care of the advantages OS X had over Windows. So why would one need to buy a Mac for?

Nice looking hardware? Fine, because one will be able to chose if they want Mac OS X or Vista installed.

Listen carefully, listen to what I say.

    Apple is a hardware company

2/3 rd’s of it’s income comes from HARDWARE.

Lot’s of Apple Stores need to move lots of product. Why doesn’t Dell have stores? Why did Gateway Stores die off?

These companies are selling the most popular OS on their equiptment and still Gateway Stores died.

Now how can Apple, with their small market share, expect to keep their high priced stores open without selling Mac’s with Vista?

    IMPOSSIBLE!!

Once the iPod fad is over, Apple will be hurting and will need to sell anything to move hardware. including VistaMac’s.

Look how Apple is charging a whopping $99 for a cheap leather iPod case you can get online for $20.

How about the $200 overpriced iPod Hi Fi?

Why does Apple try to sell everything on it’s online store? Why is Apple muscling out the generic stores selling Apple products?

“Milk the Macintosh for all it’s worth and move on to the next big thing”

    Is exactly what’s going on.

  10. Morty, the reason Gateway had to close it stores is because of Dell’s cheaper methods of selling computers via phone call/online.

The cost of running those stores is quite high, how Apple will be able to continue to do it on such a paltry market share remains to be seen.

But people do like the “store” concept, a place they can physically deal with a company instead of online.

This is a good consumer approach, but business and IT can deal directly online and take advantage of cheaper prices.

Apple is morphing into a consumer products company, we should be seeing Apple branded TV’s, phones and other devices to support the huge cost of running all those stores.

Vista on Apple’s hardware is almost a given.

Needless to say we at Dell have been quite worried, the company came out with a line of better PC’s to compete with Apple. Also buying Alienware before Apple could.

Dell didn’t become the #1 PC vendor by lying on our backsides, we will compete with Apple because we can sell bulk computers to buisnesses and provide support to enterprise which they are unable or unwilling to do.

  11. DellDude,

Nice and balanced reply to Morty, wouldn’t be so sure on the Vista-Apples.
What Morty forgets so easy is the one part of Job’s personality that is so very much critical for Apple’s current success.

    Perfection

Repeat that a few times Morty, just like your developers. Even though Apple is getting closer to Microsoft, they also repeatedly showed the world that they want to control the whole widget, and will do so over and over again.

You can call me a zealot, or KoolAid-addict, but I know a few people that have the same drive for perfection and they would not let go of that for any money, for any reason.

Remains to be seen, but I’m confident on this one…

  12. Why are any of you even bothering replying to Morty.. He’s just MACDUDE IN DISGUISE…

Don’t waste your time arguing with him… The guys a depressed lunatic and you won’t get anywhere with him..

He has no common sense whatsoever.

The best you can do is ignore him, he’ll go away..

  13. Just on observation of the screenshots of Vista. Have you noticed MS has even gone so far as to copy the OS X appearance of the trash with their “recycle bin.” The had to go with the stainless steel wired bucket. If this isn’t indicative of their “innovative” methods, I don’t know what is. Can anyone help me out here?

  14. I hadn’t heard about Apple even considering buying Alienware. No doubt they are fast boxes, but with SJ’s good taste, those butt-ugly cases would be the first thing he’d 86.
