What will really be interesting is how long will it take until the new Zune brand of DRM is cracked? And will it be cracked to allow unlimited life instead of 3 days or will it be cracked to allow a worm to infect all of the Zunes within WiFi distance?

Did everyone notice Enderle's comment that you have to buy a Zune player first, then get the service. With the Apple products, it can be the otehr way around?

Ten bucks says someone will write a trojan horse/virus/worm for this thing within a few days after launch that will not only insert itself onto the shared Zune music, but once shared, copy itself to all the music on the Zune, then when connected to the windows only PC, it will infect the PC with said trojanviruswormm and them begin infecting all of windows and delete everyones HDDs and any BIOS damage it can do on Microsofties birthday!

Err on the side of caution by restricting everything, including stuff I legally own...yeah, that makes a LOT of sense...

Much easier to just burn a CD of tracks and give it to my friends, then let them upload them to their own players...

Microsoft only goal every time is to control the user of their software. And mine any way they can, even secretly as much information data as possible of the user.

Microsoft is total control freak. And is paranoid when they can't control the user. Control is all they want. Actually it's the whole PC side.

The mindset of why is the user doing that with our stuff? They're not supposed to be doing that. Let's DRM their original music. What can they do? Not buy the software or products.

Just wait till their music marketplace opens and people are connecting their PC's to it. I guarantee Microsoft will be mining all the user data from the user pc.

Actually, they have to encrypt everything - otherwise they could be an illegal file sharing service and would get sued by the RIAA.

Wow. Just when you thought that DRM for music was at least strapped down to the table, Microsoft puts a couple of million bucks into it and now it's walking around like Frankenstein. Can I please DRM-encode all of my music? Well Microsoft doesn't even bother to ask. It just assumes that I want to. Thanks, Microsoft.

Consider this scenario. You load some tracks on to your Zune, play them twice each. Then your hard drive on your main computer dies. You think you're safe, right? You download your music back to main computer and play the tunes one more time. But guess what? Now you can't play the songs ever again without purchasing them, thanks to Zune's encryption.

How the heck are you supposed to purchase music that doesn't exist commercially? So now you're facing the prospect of NEVER getting your music back, thanks to Microsoft.

So, since MS has stated that Zune will be using a proprietary DRM in the files they will be selling via their Zune music service, is MS admitting that their Zune software and hardware technology can't tell the difference between a DRM'd file and a non-DRM'd file?

What a load of crock.

This is nothing more than MS toadying to the entertainment industry to severely limit Zune users from sharing files with each other. I doubt this is going to go over very well.

It's a shame, too. As an advertising professional, I can invision methods in which this sharing "feature" could prove beneficial to independent artists, but the way MS has implemented it could actually hinder them instead.

You can buy items from the iTunes Music Store and play them on your computer. You don't need an iPod to avail yourself of the iTMS offerings.

Why would anyone want to buy one of these? I have no idea...I'll take an ipod anyday. Oh no! I have to hook it up ??? Oh no! Sheesh, what a waste of a feature. I don't think it even qualifies as a feature since it disappears in 3 days or less. Keep up the mundane, obscure, unneeded innovation M$!

The crackers out there will find a way to eliminate the "3 plays/3 days" limit.

Even the Winfans are calling it DOA with the proposed DRM setup. Also several are pissed that it won't support the Plays for Shit songs they already own.

I can't believe Microsoft designs DRM where the user is constantly going to bump into restrictions. That will be so annoying. Apple's DRM is notable because very few users will bump into its restrictions. But I suppose it's not so bad since a Zune users will rarely run into another Zune user, except maybe on the Microsoft campus after Ballmer mandates a "confiscation" of iPods for Zunes. So essentially, the wi-fi feature is useless.

When Apple does wireless on the iPod, it will be "wireless," as in telephone wireless. Hence, the long rumored "iPod phone" when it's finally ready. Apple's wireless "sharing" will be streaming of content between the telecomming iPod's, as long as the iPod users are connected, but media immediately becomes unavailable when disconnected. That's a DRM restriction that easy to understand intuitively, not "three strikes you're out." It will essentially be wireless long-distance "pod-jacking." That's got to be what Apple has planned.

Doesn't wireless work with any other wireless product? I mean not just Zune to Zune in this case, but wouldn't you be able to wirlessly transmit from Zune to computer or vice versa. If a virus gets lose it could cause major headaches. And whats gonna happen to Zune (the iPod killer) when the next iPod will be nearly 3 times the capacity, have a full sized screen AND also is wireless.

Microscum is going to go too far someday whether it be pushing the limits of the law as with the creative commons license or severely abusing their own PAYING legitimate customers to ever more draconian hoops to jump through. The xbox was modded to run flawlessly with a linux os and this will be too.

Maybe you should wait until it is out before bashing Microsoft. Give it some time to be in the market.
