Epic fail: Microsoft’s Windows 7 crashes and burns on live TV as commentators laugh (with video)
Friday, October 23, 2009 - 08:43 AM EST

Microsoft's Mojave-For-Real, Vista service pack, er, "Windows 7" was inflicted yesterday and a Japanese TV show checked it out. It's in Japanese, but no translation is necessary:

MacDailyNews Take: We love how they cut to the canned video to try to cover the reboots. Macintosh. Because life's too short. Macをはじめよう。

By the way, Apple has incorporated Multi-Touch™ into their OS in the correct way, on spacious trackpads and the Magic Mouse, not on a vertical screen where fingerprints smudge and users' arms would quickly tire in what everyone — everyone outside of the PC box assemblers and Microsoft, that is — calls "Gorilla Arm."

Only Microsoft, in typical half-assed fashion, would take exactly the device designed for viewing and occlude it intentionally when there are far better, far more logical solutions. Perhaps Apple's patent portfolio has consigned Microsoft to the display ghetto for their ill-conceived touch inputs? If so, we smile.

To us longtime Apple watchers, Cupertino seems to be saying quite clearly, "Multi-Touch™ on the screen only when trackpads/mice are not available/part of the device."

See Apple's Mac OS X Multi-Touch™ in action: swipe, zoom, rotate, and secondary click. There are more gestures than just those four, but you get the idea. Apple's Mac OS X Multi-Touch™ actually works.

Oct 23, 09 - 07:47 am Comment from: neilt

As much as I would love to say that was Windows failing, it seemed to be the touchscreen hardware.

That being said, it is the problem with windows that MS doesn't know what crappy components dell or hp are throwing in there at any given time.

Oct 23, 09 - 07:50 am Comment from: Macintosher

What utter rubbish it proves to be.

Oct 23, 09 - 07:51 am Comment from: DLMeyer

Yes, well, that seemed to go well. Yup. No problems there. Maybe it would have been more entertaining if they'd let the female geek give the presentation? Naw ... geeks are no fun!
That was a big, beautiful screen, though, wasn't it? And the windows moved about smoothly, when they moved about, didn't they? Almost worth getting Gorilla-arms over!
Whee!

Oct 23, 09 - 07:51 am Comment from: John

Wow, after seeing that demo, I'm even less inclined to even touch Win7. Ever.

Mojave Vista 7 -- It's Still Windows™

Oct 23, 09 - 07:58 am Comment from: Kevin

Was it the hardware failing?? What was she doing what looked like a reboot?? Was that to restart the software or something for the hardware?? Either way, get your fingers off my screen!!

Oct 23, 09 - 07:58 am Comment from: M.X.N.T.4.1

What were they going to do with multi touch though? Move some windows around the screen and randomly make things bigger and smaller probably. Great.

Oct 23, 09 - 08:02 am Comment from: Ebster

That was to funny, I hope that video clip is seen by Millions of people, and I hope Monkey boy sees it to !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oct 23, 09 - 08:03 am Comment from: NCIceman

Is that even a touchscreen monitor? I guess they wouldn't make that big of a goof. Still, it does look bad...

Oct 23, 09 - 08:03 am Comment from: gorilla arm

Leave it to MS to implement the feature that I guarantee you Apple will not: a touchscreen interface on a traditional desktop computer. Apple knows that this configuration will not work, but MS say what the hell it's technology lets just throw it out there without giving it any thought.

Two words: gorilla arm.

Oct 23, 09 - 08:05 am Comment from: Cascadians

The poor guy looks really embarrassed at the end.

Maybe somebody who knows Japanese will tell us what they were trying to do.

Oct 23, 09 - 08:05 am Comment from: Macaday

Illusions of quick - only from Microsoft.

I think that demo is an important illustration - it shows up the fraud that Microsoft has pulled...

7 is chuntering in the background to catch up with the graphics that painted the illusion of quick.

Oct 23, 09 - 08:05 am Comment from: Lou

Gotta love micro$%^&. Forget the stupid touch screen, who's that cute Japanese doll.

Oct 23, 09 - 08:06 am Comment from: kirkgray

I've never set up a touch screen. But my guess is they hooked up the screen for output, but neglected to connect a USB cable for the input.

Oct 23, 09 - 08:07 am Comment from: ed

Forget Windows 7, that female news reader looked frickin hot, lets see more of her!

Oct 23, 09 - 08:07 am Comment from: nomoremsbs

Microsoft can program all they want, but it's not going to change the fact that there will never be a consistant experience when your have so many hardware combinations and conflicts. Apple's vertical approach is slowly gaining market share.

Oct 23, 09 - 08:10 am Comment from: MacTony

LOL too funny. Who wants to use their computer screen anyway. I think that Apple is implementing multi-touch the the way it should be done.

Oct 23, 09 - 08:13 am Comment from: apple KID

and thats a expensive sony computer or display wow lol

Oct 23, 09 - 08:13 am Comment from: Mr. Reeee

Dare we say "Newton II"?

It's high-profile demos like this that can kill a product. Not that W7 represents even a shadow of the Newton's level and breadth of innovation.

Oct 23, 09 - 08:14 am Comment from: Dirty Pierre le Punk

The female presenter was a little cutie. I think I'm in love.

Oct 23, 09 - 08:20 am Comment from: Zune Tang®

Microsoft's revolutionary touch screen technology is incredible You don't even need a stupid mouse like you do for MAC. Did you MAC fangirls see how you can just touch the screen to do stuff? Belittle it all you want, MAC sheep, but you're scared.

Once again Microsoft innovates and MAC arrogantly brushes aside true genius. Your lame emperor of your little 2% market share kingdom has no clothes. Whatever.

Your potential. Our passion.™

hmmm seems like a perfectly normal windows operating system to me :/

Oct 23, 09 - 08:22 am Comment from: Ken

Yeah thats right my MAC NEVER locked up on me!!! I wish and thats from Apple who is responsbile for the hardware and the os. At least windows has an excuse if the manufacturer of the multi-touch display write crappy drivers is windows really to blame!!

My Japanese is a little rusty, but I'm pretty sure I heard the guy say, " If you brought a sword, now would be a good time to fall on it".

So much face was lost today.

Oct 23, 09 - 08:31 am Comment from: BlackWolf

I call dibbs on the IT chick, I'm sure she has a Mac in the back, if not I'll give her one.

The embarrased presenter had to have set it up and tested it before they went to air, any news caster, let's call him the weather man, would have done that much just to make sure to not embarras himself.

So it's set up, tested, 10min to 10hrs later after just sitting there doing nothing and typical for MS is ceases to work. Those were quick reboot times!

Oct 23, 09 - 08:37 am Comment from: Rike

If the IT chick was employed by M$ she's now in the unemployment line.

I LOVE the new 'just works' features. And obviously 100% compatible with all of your favorite hardware! Naturally they picked only the finest hardware for demonstration purposes, but your cheap P.O.S. multitouch screen at home WILL achieve the same performance at home.

So, let's start the bidding...do I hear $299? Please remember, you are bidding on the software only!

Oct 23, 09 - 08:47 am Comment from: NHL

Oh, and this video is just a rounding error.

Oct 23, 09 - 08:51 am Comment from: rws

@Ken,

"At least windows has an excuse if the manufacturer of the multi-touch display write crappy drivers is windows really to blame!!"

Seriously? Does that "excuse" make you feel better when things go wrong, every time they go wrong on your computer? You deserve a PC then.

I don't care about the why as much as the results in this case. Macs work better than Windows machines. They are a BETTER hardware/OS combination.

But hey, if you're okay with the reboots, registry issues, configuration issues, viruses, spyware removal / protection tools required and in general, the way that over time the machine gets slower, then yes, have fun with your Windows PC.

Oct 23, 09 - 08:53 am Comment from: Dirty Pierre le Punk

Oct 23, 09 - 08:57 am Comment from: zanus

WHy would you want to put your fingers on your screen? I go crazy when there is the slightest smudge on my 24 inch iMac. It should be good for sales of screen cleaners! What a joke if this is the innovative feature!

Oct 23, 09 - 08:57 am Comment from: bioness

What crappy troubleshooting. Its obvious the touchscreen drivers are faulty, the best way to do this is to, restart the computer. Not open up a software in hope of it to work.

Win 7 sucks

Oct 23, 09 - 08:58 am Comment from: AmericanJoe

While I hate that xp embedded is used, Crestron manufactures fantastic touchpanels for control system interface, and they have been using them for years. The key differential I think is that they had their own world class engineers to in and fix a lot of the xp crap to function on their (admittedly) custom and well engineered panels.

While I absolutely love these crestron panels ( they're bullet proof and don't fail) I would never want one for a computer monitor. It doesn't make sense for data entry and interaction. Touch interface, as has already been pointed out, should only be used when any other type of interface ( mouse, keyboard) is not convenient or comducive to a cohesive and harmonious environment (that sounds a little too much like a granola head- sorry)

Oct 23, 09 - 09:11 am Comment from: iStepchild

MDN...it crashed twice on the video.
Ballmer will now tout consistency.

Oct 23, 09 - 09:16 am Comment from: orenokotodaze

They had tested it prior - it just acted like 'Doze... The man news guy said, "Maybe 'Doze 7 doesn't like Fuji TV". I speak 日本語 (Japanese), and they were just talking about it not working, it should work, etc. Making a few remarks, trying to lighten it up a little for the guy doing the demo. Believe me, the Japanese would have tested it out previous to live TV. And, used top quality equipment. It's just Windows...

And, touching the screen??!!?? What an absolutely ridiculous idea! What can you expect from a company that links with Burger King in Japan for the first 30 customers to get a SEVEN layer burger for ¥777 to commemorate Windows 7! Wow, just a bad wow... Right, for as long as it takes; and it doesn't appear to be much longer.

"As much as I would love to say that was Windows failing, it seemed to be the touchscreen hardware.

Well, that is just it, Windows is half the solution, and the hardware is the other half, but once you are using it, what really matters is if it works or not, and I have to say that it didn't, regardless of who's is at fault. It still sucked and that is why having the hardware and software under one roof is still the way to go.

Oct 23, 09 - 09:26 am Comment from: William

This is so stupid! You cant blame windows for .......Im just playin, this is your typical cheap microsoft knock off again..again. and to try to be like mac you get to pay 200+ dollars for the honor. As all of you as my witnesses: If Microsoft ever has an original idea ever again I will go back to using a p.c, maybe....ok we will see.

Oct 23, 09 - 09:34 am Comment from: s

@orenokotodaze

You are being kind to MS... The newscaster also said "same thing happened last night to Mr. Kimura during the super news." SNAFU

Oct 23, 09 - 09:36 am Comment from: PC Apologist

Yaaaaay Zune Tang is back!

This seems like a pretty clear case of the touch-screen not working, not the OS crashing. Now, whether the problem was hardware or software is another question entirely.

Oct 23, 09 - 09:39 am Comment from: Joe Mamma

For anyone defending that "it's a hardware problem" remember that's MS's selling point: Multiple partners gives the customer choice. That means you get to customize your frustration. BTW, did the host guy look like Legis Phirbin or what?
