Microsoft’s Windows 7ista ‘made by’ lie

"People who believe the ads--that Windows 7 was 'made by me'--will believe anything. So try this: Windows 7 was 'made' by people who hated Windows Vista," David Coursey writes for PC World.

"Forget the love fest that has surrounded the Windows 7 launch. This outpouring of affection sets a new low for affection. People love Windows 7 not so much for what it is so much as for what it isn't," Coursey writes. "Loving Windows 7 is a bit like the good feeling you receive when the beatings finally stop."

Coursey writes, "The Windows 7 beta process wasn't a real search for customer feedback so much a cleverly organized extended marketing test... Being better by comparison to Windows Vista hardly makes it a great one. The world would have much more respect for Microsoft if it was honest in promoting Windows 7. We can take the truth, but can Microsoft?"

Randall C. Kennedy reports for InfoWorld, "Those of us who actively participated in the [Windows 7] beta process -- either officially, as part of the formal beta program, or unofficially by grabbing and testing every wayward build leak -- know the real story."

"For example, we know that, despite Microsoft's feel-good message about customer input, the truth is that Windows 7 was created largely through a hermetically sealed development process driven by Stephen Sinofsky and a select group of his closest advisers," Kennedy reports. "We also know that major design decisions -- like the new task bar -- were finalized months, if not years, before the first milestone builds leaked. And we know that, despite a massive public beta program, virtually nothing in the OS changed from the time it was first made available in January until the final bits were frozen in July."

Kennedy reports, "The truth is that Microsoft's entire marketing campaign for Windows 7 is predicated on a lie."

I believe that windows 7 is windows Xp with a new clown suit. If you go trough all the "wizard' to change a simple parameter, at the end you are at standard windows XP Menu (like "system properties").
They also add some "diagnostic wizards" that does not came to any solution and they consume a lot of resources (look at the "services" menu).
My friend Tony is skinnier tha a cow, but he still fat. Windows 7 could be the Best OS that microsoft has made, but Microsoft makes bery bad OSes so you still in a crappy OS.

After viewing the "Made by me!" commercials I need to tell someone at Microsoft that there is a difference between "cool" nerds and the kind you wouldn't sit next to an public transportation. True, Windoze 7 is not "made by me" ... but keep in mind, Justin Long isn't really a Mac, and John Hodgeman isn't really a PC.

Most people know ads are staged. The effect is intended to be subliminal. Even if your intellect tells you it's fiction, the message gets into your subconscious, That's what 'style' is about. It's not what you say, but how you say it (One reason italics are effective).

The question you have to ask yourself is this; If you were an ad agency trying to sell Windows, how would you do it?

Sad as it seems, there are actually people earning their livings working for Microsoft and their various contractors. Until Apple is big enough to support everyone in the tech industry, others will continue producing and selling (or trying to sell) their products.

Makes me wonder about the rest of the company. It explains a lot, honestly... such as why Microsoft doesn't seem concerned with starting from scratch, creating a fantastic OS, and maybe exploring a different business model... they feel they can just rely on their dominance and marketing, and focus on other things. R&D;isn't as important to them as it is to Apple, it's all about the cold, hard cash. Apple has always been about quality, quality, quality... and I think it's only a matter of time before the mass market begin to realize it.

The majority of organisations will dual-source almost everything right down to paper clips but not technology. No way! CTOs resist dual-sourcing the operating system and tool set.

When talking of Stokholm Syndrome, these CTOs are the self-appointed ‘prisoner trustees’ who keep the employees in line and drinking the M$-laced variety of kool-aid.

Nope - not me.

For me it was an Apple IIc vs IBM PCjr. Tried them both, preferred the Apple. Then IIgs, then Mac SE/30. All decisions made by trying the product and comparing them to what else was available. Nothing else out there was better, so has been Apple all the way from then. Marketing had nothing to do with it.

Same thing with the iPod - 1st one came out, and I tried it and bought it. Not a marketing thing.

I believe you're a little overstating your case (as I'm sure it's your job to do in marketing). While it's true that marketing allows me to hear of products I might not have known about, it doesn't *tell* me what to buy. If I buy something that marketing suggests I buy, and I like it, I'll buy it again. If I buy something that marketing suggests I buy and I *don't* like it, I won't buy it again.

I'm not a mindless drone. I didn't buy an Apple computer because of an ad. I bought my first Apple computer because my co-workers were using one, patiently showed me how to use it, and made me see how much better it was to use than the Windows 3.1 POS I was using.

I don't buy the TV that's on display or in a newspaper/magazine/TV ad just because it's there. I read consumer reports and reviews that show me which is the best TV to buy based on price, product quality and customer satisfaction. In fact, that's how my husband and I buy most of our stuff.

We're the antithesis of your ideal customer. We have a brain and we use it.

88-90% of OS market belongs to M$. True?

Win7 is getting "good" to "great" reviews. True?

Vista got "bad" to "awful" reviews. True?

Is there proof that Win7 is better than Vista? No.

Is the media hyping Win 7 as better then Vista? Yes.

Will people buy Win 7? Last I checked, it was at the top of the list on Amazon.

Did M$ spend a ton on marketing? Yes.
Has Apple spent a ton on marketing? Yes.

How can you say that "Marketing is not as influential as you make it seem." Here are few companies that may disagree with your opinion of the importance of marketing:

Nike, McDonalds, Coke, Apple, Microsoft, Exxon, Fox, CNN, Heinz, Crest, Calvin Klein, Stayfree, Hershey, Nestle, Sketchers, Movado, BMV, Ford, Lexus, Sony, HP, Toyota....etc.

Is your net worth equal to or more than these companies? If so, please explain how you did this without marketing.

Look, as far as I can see both Snow Leopard AND Windows 7 are service packs. The difference is in the price, previous operating systems and how well the previous versions worked.

By putting a low price for Leopard users to upgrade to Snow Leopard Apple is admitting that there is not all that much difference between the two operating systems. And yes I do know about SL's 64 bit option. However Leopard did have the wobbles at first but it does hum along nicely.

Vista on the other hand was a train wreck and a RAM hog and Windows' marketing of Windows 7 admits to to this (at least the former anyway). The thing that really gets me mad is if Windows 7 Vista without the problems (and a few extras) why are they charging so much? It seems that this issue is being lost in the ensuing slanging match.

To put it bluntly Microsoft is slugging Windows' users and then they have the gall to say that Apple charges too much. To me that's not marketing it's just plain bullshit!

There are several points being missed here.
Firstly, there is no question that marketing is a very important and in many cases successful tool for molding opinion. However you bring up Vista and it's failure and Win7 and it's apparent success(thus far). What you fail to remember is that in initial reviews Vista was given many of the same raves (even by some of the same sources). You are also forgetting where all of the negative opinions of Vista came from, it was with the general public and word of mouth. Eventually the tech press had to jump in and start agreeing with the GP or risk looking like idiots

You are also forgetting in your repeating of the "MS has 90%" argument how they got that. It was not in response to a successful marketing campaign but rather a number of different variables.

I also choose Macs by looking at the alternatives. I have used every iteration of Windows (including 7) and many Linux distros... even tried BeOS and NeXT and I will try ChromeOS when it comes out. So far the Mac makes so much more sense to me that using anything else would be foolish.
