Microsoft’s Windows Vista racks up negative reviews

Apple Store“In one of the new ‘Get a Mac’ ads on television, PC appears wearing a hospital gown, prompting Apple to ask if he’s going in for a check-up. ‘Well,’ PC says, ‘I’m upgrading to Vista today, which is great, but I get a little nervous when they mess around with my insides,'” Roulla Yiacoumi reports for The Sydney Morning Herald.

“Apple fans may have a bit of a chuckle but early adopters who rushed out and bought Microsoft’s new operating system, Windows Vista, as well as more system and graphics memory, have failed to see the funny side,” Yiacoumi reports.

Yiacoumi reports, “Since Vista was launched on January 30, its creator has been racking up negative commentary. ‘Utterly unimaginative, internally discordant and woefully out of tune,’ was the verdict at Forbes.com… ‘Not yet ready for prime time,’ USA Today wrote… Paul Randle, Microsoft Australia’s consumer audience marketing manager, says Vista has been received ‘phenomenally well’ since its launch a month ago. ‘We completely refute the product wasn’t ready. Negative feedback has been in the minority.'”

Yiacoumi continues, “Gartner is predicting that by 2010, 72 per cent of machines sold to consumers will come with Vista. Sounds like a cue for another Mac ad.”

    You owe me a new keyboard ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

MW: planning: as in “Proper Planning Prevents Piss-poor Performance”

    =:~)

  2. Was reading a review of Vista from a long time mac user on Appleinsider and he makes some interesting and non-fanboyish analyses. Note, I said “better,” not necessarily all that great. As a tool XP has its merits, so does Vista, I’m sure.

We get back to peoples’ expectations– Apple users tend to expect more from their OS than traditional Windows users. Hopefully, that’s changing…

  3. I do have to use both platforms due to some proprietary Windows only software required for work. However, I severely doubt I’ll ever upgrade to Vista since what I need to use for work runs just fine in Windows 2000 running in Parallels Desktop. Very few people at all will ever actually NEED Vista anytime soon…

  4. MattyG – Corporate customers have down grade rights, they could install a volume license copy of XP.

ChrissyOne – It takes some companies years to upgrade, and they usually buy PCs and downgrade. So yeah XP will probably have a larger market share than MacOS. In fact I think 15% is too low a number (maybe 30-40%). Several companies and government agencies have said they are not upgrading to Vista, so when they buy a new PC, they would downgrade.

  5. MDN you forgot one in your list. Scoble, Microsoft Sucks!
That was another one you could add to your list of how wonderful a reception (NOT!) Vista is since its release. Maybe Australia got a different version than the rest of us.

  6. ‘Have they ever made in better with time?’

Oh, come on now. Just over 5 years after XP’s release, XP Pro SP2 with 2 or three anti-virus programs running is quite usable. Solitaire just rocks on it.

I am sure that in 5 years, Vista SP3 with third party anti-virus programs will make Solitaire rock just as hard.

  7. > I like a bit of schadenfreude when it comes to MS, but I’m not delusional. They’re going to make it better with time.

Don’t count on it. Expect only marginal improvements, each with their own issues, as the problems seem structural. Vista is a train-wreck that has contributed to a blip in eBay sales of late model PCs with XP. Microsoft should start again from scratch or bring back XP to improve short-term revenue.

That has a nice wring to it, triangletire: Virus Inside, Switch to Mac. Many are, it seems, and Apple is releasing their ads around the world in encouragement.

  8. Maybe, able should just buy up SCO (especially now that they’re about to loose the case against IBM) and resurrect MS Xenix and run XP virtualized.

Seriously, I think Window’s architecture is fundamentally flawed and patching it up with UAC, Data Execution Prevention, OneCare, Defender, etc. only makes things worse.

They should have the guts to hit the big reset button and start from scratch. They certainly have the money to do so.

Of course, by doing so, MS risks loosing legions to Mac/Linux while they basically try do a Unix me too. Its basically a tacit admission that the Windows architecture is at a dead-end.

  9. I don’t know what’s sadder honestly:

    • That Microsoft spent BILLIONS of dollars, THOUSANDS of man-hours, and took OVER FIVE YEARS to deliver a half-baked, warmed over, might as well be XP SP3 operating system.

    OR

    • That SO MANY PEOPLE will buy and use, or be forced to use (either by work or because they’re tied to MS’s proprietary developer tools) this disgusting example of ignorance and misdirection.

What’s more is that it will take MS at least another year to work out the problems that plague users— problems that are evident and prominent today!

Despite the fact that I despise just about everything Microsoft does or has done, I never thought it would ever be this bad. Windows Vista doesn’t even deserve to be called an operating system. PC users would be better off sticking with 2000 or XP than “upgrading” to Vista.

It’s truly a pity, and I feel bad for anyone who has to be subjected to using this poor excuse for a product.

Buying new PCs and downgrading is not the answer; it’s still giving Microsoft money and in turn is stifling competition and innovation. If people want a difference, they need to make the move to OS X or Linux— if enough people move to the better alternatives then software developers will be forced to port their Windows-only software to other operating systems to stay competitive and on the ball.

Remember, the more switchers, the faster we get to the tipping point and eventual dramatic decline…

MW: With Fear and Uncertainty, Doubt <i>always<i> goes along with it.

  10. Based on sales of new desktop PC’s since its release, Vista already has a larger installed base than Mac OS X.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled Apple Illusion hosted by MDN where there’s a large Windows Vista advertisement plastered right alongside the text box I’m typing in.
