Mini DisplayPort to HDMI, DVI, and VGA adapters coming soon
Tuesday, February 10, 2009 - 04:55 PM EST

MonoPrice is planning to offer new adapters for new Mini DisplayPort-equipped MacBooks and MacBook Pros to HDMI, DVI, and VGA displays.

Mini DisplayPort is a miniaturized version of the DisplayPort used by Apple, first publicly announced on October 14, 2008. It is used in revisions of the MacBook, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro notebooks and also the 24-inch Apple Cinema Display. On November 27, 2008, Apple announced that it would license the Mini DisplayPort connector with no fee. On January 13, 2009, VESA announced that Mini DisplayPort would be included in the upcoming DisplayPort 1.2 specification.

MonoPrice's adapters:

Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter (US$14.25, due March 15, 2009)

• Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter ($15.20, due April 15, 2009)

• Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter ($13.30, due N/A)

How about a DVI to Mini adaptor, so we can all buy and use the new displays without having to buy a new MacBookPro.

But, but, but I thought this was another example of Apple's proprietary technology?

Because you know Mafia$oft never uses proprietary technology and is all about open ecosystems, like "Played For Sure".

YES!

A mini-DisplayPort to HDMI would be excellent. Especially if they can figured out a way for it to carry at least some sound with it (which I've heard is possible with Mini-DisplayPort).

There are already versions of MDP to DVI and to VGA, though these are cheaper.

At least the prices aren't too high.

I wonder if they'll come out with a Mini DP to Video (S-Video/Composite) adapter.

Is this wireless? And do they have a mini-DisplayPort to firewire?

I've been buying cables from MonoPrice for a couple years, and it's rare than anyone can beat their prices.

So glad I bought the previous generation MacBook Pro last November.
I have no desire to add to my already large, adapter collection.

Feb 11, 09 - 01:42 pm Comment from: HDMI sucks

@Jacob: why?

combining video with audio is a pain in the ass for many of us with high-end audio amplifiers that do not have HDMI switching. There's no way i'm going to replace the excellent audio amps in my studio just to support HDMI. I like the fact that Apple already offers a dedicated digital audio out in all its computers. I also use Firewire extensively for audio streaming and transfer in my studio.

HDMI is an overt attempt to sell expensive licensed cables and new consumer-grade home theater receivers. While i can afford the ridiculous HDMI cable prices, it's a pain because our amps are not co-located with the displays, so the HDMI cable tax is double what it should be. Keeping video and audio cables separate is more versatile and is actually less expensive for most users. HDMI is the most pathetic excuse for a decent digital interface standard ever. Let us hope that DisplayPort becomes the de facto video-only interface standard.
