More evidence that Mac users are smarter than Windows users
Friday, July 16, 2004 - 12:13 PM EST

"Are Mac users smarter than PC users? I doubt it's possible to get a definitive answer, but as long as you don't take any of it too seriously you can have a lot of fun playing with proxies such as the average user's ability to read and write his or her native language," Paul Murphy writes for LinuxInsider.

Murphy writes, "[Ratings for Mac users were] significantly higher than those given Slashdot's contributors, and thus better than those given text from the PC sites, but the vocabulary was larger too. Without collapsing words to their root forms, but after removing punctuation (including capitalization) and numbers, the Macintouch stuff had 870 unique words to only 517 for the combined PC sites. Overall, the results are pretty clear: Mac users might not actually be smarter than PC users, but they certainly use better English and a larger vocabulary to express more complex thinking."

Full article here.

MacDailyNews Take: Just over two years ago, a report from from Nielsen/NetRatings stated, "Those who surf the Web using a Mac tend to be better educated and make more money than their PC-using counterparts." So, of course Mac users use better English and a larger vocabulary to express more complex thinking. Why? What's painfully obvious to most Mac users may not seem so clear to the majority of Windows sufferers, so we'll just flat out say it: Mac users are smarter than Windows users. On that, you can quote us.

Give me a break. This is nonsense
It’s pathetic to think that someone is smarter because he is using a different OS.
Pathetic with a capital P.

Jul 16, 04 - 12:30 pm Comment from: Fred Mertz

Anyone who has used both Mac OS X and Windows XP and chooses the Mac isn't making much of a statement about his or her massive intelligence. It's rather an obvious choice. Those few who choose Windows even after seeing Mac OS X in action are the ones that skew the intelligence ratings so low for the Wintellites. You'd have to be a full-on cretin to pick Windows.

Most Windows users are simply ignorant of the Mac for some reason, so they still have the opportunity to prove their intelligence in the future.

thats an example of not thinking too complex there boeing smile

Jul 16, 04 - 12:32 pm Comment from: Pale Rider

Boeing777, you are showing the idiot side. You have the cause and effect reversed. Because they are smarter, they use Macs. Duh. And it's supposed to fun. wink

Jul 16, 04 - 12:32 pm Comment from: Cleetus

Me likes them Macintoshes.

Jul 16, 04 - 12:33 pm Comment from: Jimbo von Winskinheimer

Boeing777, maybe the story is really that because we are smarter, we use the Mac OS. If I were dumber and didn't know better, I'd probably use Windoze.

Please, don't hate me because I'm smart. There are so many better reasons to hate me... wink

Happy weekend to all!

Jul 16, 04 - 12:43 pm Comment from: Less is More

Actually, there is a factor of being comfortable with one's machine too. Mac users have the potential to be more productive than Windoze users. I mean, I don't freak out when I hear, "You've got mail," as I'm not expecting any email-based malware intrusions or attacks of any kind, nor am I expecting my OS to freeze or crash at any time (especially since I ditched Exploder). Even the humble iCab browser has a search field in the toolbar that'll take me to a page in dictionary / thesaurus.com with the term I entered.

Jul 16, 04 - 12:44 pm Comment from: Nother Winders User

I gots most o my teef left in my noggin and i bet i can think more complex than any of u's. i done gone to west virginny state 3 years out of 4, so i might be smarter than billgates who aint done even got that far, i reckon. MAC peeples is 2 smart fer there own good is my 2 sense.

Jul 16, 04 - 12:51 pm Comment from: NoPCZone

Picking XP over OS X would rank in stupidity right up there with Boeing leaving Seattle for Chicago. Kind of like trading in a new BMW for a 20 year old clapped-out Yugo.

hey jest cuz my mama and pappy is furst cuzins dont meen i aint gots no smartz i jest aint as quik on the uptake as yer reggaler MAC uzer. i is mad at the scients what done this report cuz it makes me feel like a tard and i is sik of heerin it

i aint that tarded. i can use winders jest lik everbody els.

Jul 16, 04 - 01:05 pm Comment from: King of Windows Users

I can think as complex as anybody. I choose Windows because everybody else uses it and I do not see any MACS for sale at Wal-Mart or on Home Shopping Channel, so you know nobody uses them. Also, there aren't any games or other software for MAC, so what good is a computer that just sits there? How's that for complex?

Jul 16, 04 - 01:07 pm Comment from: Aryugaetu

It is a general observation of most animals that the dumber they are, the larger the group they will form. The more intelligent animals tend to be loners or form small "family" groups.

It takes intelligence to break from the crowd and hunt on your own — make your own decisions — and to realize that you could be smarter than the group as a whole.

Windows' herd mentality:
- "Everyone uses Windows."
- "So many people can't be wrong!"
- "I feel safer using what everyone else is using."

Apple's independent mentality"
http://www.thecompleat.com/crazyones/video/index.htm
[play the video]

Perhaps, people in general are dumb and naturally join herds (compare city/suburbs with rural populations). It is for this reason that Apple may never be number 1. The Apple staff is constantly trying to "Think Different", and these changes frighten too many in the herd.

It is sad though, that the ones within the herd (by the very nature of a herd) are unable to notice that Apple is at the head of the herd. There are rumors and myths of what may lie ahead, but with a herd so large, no one can see the truth. The very thought of possibly moving outside the herd just to take a glimpse of reality is enough to scare them back into the group. It has already been proven that such a tight herd can be easily succumbed by a rapid virus.

Apple is more of a family group. There is support for each other, and they can explore new routes with much greater ease and flexibility.

There are followers and there are leaders; a herd mentality or an independent spirit. Which are you?

Pale Rider's right on the money. We're not smarter because we use OS-X, we use OS-X because we're smarter.

And no, we shouldn't take it too seriously, it's a bit of fun.

I did mail the link to a colleague who likes to say "Macs ar 5hit" to me, just to see if he'll get a response. Just for fun.

@ NoPCZone: Huh? What's Boeing's move got to do with it? Chicago is a great place for a company to move. It's a central location with two major airports, major railroad distribution points, shipping ports, world-class educational centers, and on and on and on. While Seattle has much of that, it certainly isn't centrally located. I'm not saying that Boeing had to move, but Chicago is far from being a poor choice.

Jul 16, 04 - 01:17 pm Comment from: Winder usin guy agin

And we is gonna make more little winders users so their. hows that float yer boats smarty pantz MAC users? betcha we makes mor little uns than u do. how that be fer complex thinkin?

@ Teh amc make roxorz: Um, don't you know what sarcasm is?

Jul 16, 04 - 01:26 pm Comment from: Anon

Unfortunately, "Teh amc make roxorz" brings down Mac users' average intelligence level. Luckily for the rest of us, he's part of a very small minority, so it's statistically meaningless.

Jul 16, 04 - 01:32 pm Comment from: Judge Bork

How did you take that apart?

Mac user: I looked it over from all sides, determined the order in which I felt it was put together and performed the actions in reverse. (Total time: 12 minutes)

Windows user: I beat it with a shovel over and over until it fell apart. Some of it's broken now, but "close enough," I always say! (Total time: 1 hour, 8 minutes)

Jul 16, 04 - 01:48 pm Comment from: Russell

Legitimate explanation: Macs are more expensive. Therefore, you must have more money to buy them. Those that have more money tend to be able to afford better education. Thus the deciding factor is money, which affects education and computer choice.

Jul 16, 04 - 01:48 pm Comment from: Boeing777

For those who insulted me.

You do believe anything you read don't you? If so, then you have shown a major immaturity in your thinking.

Saying that I'm an idiot is making you intellectually disabled because I haven't insulted anyone in here. I simply commented this very MDN topic.

When you disagree with someone you need to have a point to back your view. Insults are for children.

Jul 16, 04 - 01:52 pm Comment from: Will

I had no money starting out. But, I had a brain. And I ended up paying for my considerable education loans with my Macintosh-based work. Now, I have the means to be able to live in nice houses and drive nice cars and buy nice Macs. Brains came first (thanks, God) and the money followed.

Jul 16, 04 - 02:00 pm Comment from: beatsme

there are so many Windows users that the weight of their numbers is going to pull their aggregate IQ/salary/level of education down. Doesn't necessarily make Mac users smarter.

Jul 16, 04 - 02:03 pm Comment from: Holliday

Some people have very little money but are 100 times happier than people with money. Some folks tend not to worry about how much they have, but what's in their heart that matters most. Surround yourself with happy poor people and you'll always be picking up tips...

Jul 16, 04 - 02:04 pm Comment from: David Schell

Jul 16, 04 - 02:22 pm Comment from: LOL

This has to be the dumbest MacDailyNews article yet. It'd be better named MacDailyRants since there's rarely much news here that doesn't come attached with a "MacDailyNews Take:" which dumbs down the whole article into a childish and biased cheap-shot at everyone's favorite punching bag, Microsoft.

Jul 16, 04 - 02:25 pm Comment from: Robert

In a nice bit of irony Boeing777, the article points out that more Windows users use a 'handle' on forum posts while the Mac users tended to use real names.

Jul 16, 04 - 02:26 pm Comment from: LD

It's not quite as pathetic as you might think. People do not become more intelligent because they use a different OS, rather, they use a different OS because they are already more intelligent.

Jul 16, 04 - 02:48 pm Comment from: funstraw

Here is proof that Mac users are smarter!
http://mysite.verizon.net/lmelledy/almamac.jpg
I scanned this from the world book almanac 2003 edition
yes i spelled it almamac on purpose, Now where exactly do you get the idea that windows users are smarter?

Jul 16, 04 - 03:02 pm Comment from: Jack A

What was that grouping term I heard used somewhere? "A Smug of Mac Users"? Wonder where that came from?

wink

Jul 16, 04 - 03:47 pm Comment from: Jimbo von Winskinheimer

Crackhead's comment shows just how stupid Wintel users can be. They believe the Windows crap they spent "half as much" for is equal to the Mac hardware/OS/software I got. Ignorant PC users have never seen what you get for your dollar on the Mac.

Jul 16, 04 - 03:59 pm Comment from: eric

When people are better educated, they are usually paid better. If they're paid better, they buy better products. Apple makes better computers. Bottom line. Suck it up Boing 777.

Jul 16, 04 - 04:01 pm Comment from: Airbus

ARRGH! this topic is always good for combative posts...

Boeing, your initial post kicks off with getting the 'cause-effect' relationship BACKWARD, guy... Using a particular OS doesn't make you SMARTER, but rather, the article surmises that SMARTER people pick OSX. Which may or may not be true. But understand the premise.

Jul 16, 04 - 04:23 pm Comment from: AntiMac

Smarter doesn't mean you make more money. Your boss makes way more money than you, but he's definitely not smarter than you. Who's smarter, Bill Gate or Steve Jobs?

Jul 16, 04 - 04:37 pm Comment from: Daniel

Maybe we're just not as dumb grin

Jul 16, 04 - 05:09 pm Comment from: david vesey

I've always thought that the decision whether to buy a Mac or Wintel was an IQ test of sorts.

In 1984 I owned a Commodore 64 and had access to IBMs and Apple IIs, as well as dedicated computers like the kind that programmed multi-media shows. I used to program those computers to control large slide shows. I heard about the Mac, went to an Apple store, played around with a 128k Mac for about 5 minutes. It was obvious that the Macintosh was a huge leap forward, so I bought one. And I've never looked back.

20 years later, the superficial differences have blurred. Most people are fooled by the fact that Windows and the Mac 'look and feel' pretty close to each other. To the casual observer.

But as we all know, the difference between a PC and a Mac is the difference between a transvestite and a real woman.

All kidding aside.. I go with the Money = Macs theory. Even though it is generally the computer of choice for creatives of all types: musicians, artists, photographers, etc. who often do not have much money at all. But if a higher education goes with intelligence and money, then the Mac certainly has a better chance of ending up in their house.

Jul 16, 04 - 05:11 pm Comment from: irfoton

This kind of article is nonsense. Just because there is a correlation between data doesn't always mean there is a direct cause and effect. I think in this case what we see is that more educated people have more disposable income and hence less likely to buy a computer based solely on price.

So, with 90% or more of the market and cheap machines, WinTel machines are more likely to have users with less education. Make a Mac for $10 and you may see a completely different demographic.

Jul 16, 04 - 05:43 pm Comment from: Shabaz

Eric wrote: When people are better educated, they are usually paid better. If they're paid better, they buy better products. Apple makes better computers. Bottom line. Suck it up Boing 777.

Interesting, so now anyone with money can buy a smart mind by purchasing a Mac right? Is this how you think yourself smarter?

Plus, do you have to wait for an article or an analysis to tell you that you're smart because of the computer you chose.

Some less fortunate people are smarter to pick a more affordable solution that fits their needs rather than thinking that a smart attitude can be bought in an Apple store.

Jul 16, 04 - 08:09 pm Comment from: M

Eric...ditto.
The perception is that Macs cost more $$$. Whether the Mac is worth it or not may be debatable, the point is that the more intelligent usually make more $$$ and they have the moeny to pay for a Mac.
