Motorola’s future flagship handset spied

Motorola’s future flagship handset, code-named “Alexander,” has been spied by The Boy Genius Report.

BGR reports that the handset’s OS will be Windows Mobile 6.1.

For the three readers now left reading this report, the Motorola entry is said to feature assisted GPS and a 5-8 mexapixel camera.

Release date is fourth quarter 2008, according to BGR.

If that’s the flagship, Moto’s fleet is sunk.

  1. It wouldn’t be bad if it was Moto’s answer to the Palm Centro. Slim, pocketable and very cheap. Unfortunately with a 5-8 megapixel camera you can tell they’ll try to market it as a somewhat expensive, top-of-the-line device and that’s where it will fail.

Of course any comparisons to the iPhone will hurt it that much more. I personally would rather buy an old, beat up 1stGen iPhone with a cracked screen off eBay than the Moto “Alexander.”

  2. I dunno. Its kinda ok looking. Yes, it does seem to be a genetic cross between an iphone and a blackberry. Its sorta creepy like they threw an iphone and a blackberry into a primitive telepod from the fly movies and integrated them as they were transported into another telepod. I can picture the phones screaming in horror as they operator threw the switch. =/

I think it’s worse than mere delusion, actually. It’s wholesale insanity. It’s believing the Earth is flat, that the Sun is the size of a coin when you hold one up to the sky. It’s the belief that Motorola has a chance in hell of competing against ANYTHING with that weird blackberry clone they call the next best thing.

I suppose Motorola hope they’ll corner the ‘dork’ market and be given spades of credibility in return…

  4. Macaday and McScrith you are absolutely right about the resolution myth. Without a lens to match the capability of the sensor, the picture will be no better. And lenses are likes pipes – too small and nothing goes through. I love people who take pictures with cell phones and expect that they have some archival master piece. Try enlarging it!

  5. Looks like it’s a slider, which will make it fairly thick compared to an iPhone. It may be shorter than an iPhone, but the screen is definitely smaller, also. Not going to work well for internet use, not only due to screen size but also browser and OS.

On the other hand, what did anyone expect of Moto? Apple appears to have multi-touch locked up with patents, the other companies are years behind in development, and no one has an OS anywhere near as powerful as OS X on iPhone.

If Moto tried to compete directly with the iPhone, it would get killed. So it’s doing the next best thing – going after all those people who want tiny physical buttons and Windows Mobile.

    Good luck to ’em.

  6. Quite steampunkish actually — a bit like a Victorian typewriter.

    Mind you, I doubt that’s the effect they were really after ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  7. BGR reports that the handset’s OS will be Windows Mobile 6.1!

Freakin’ awesome. I know Motorola wouldn’t let me down. Just look at that beautiful phone. You MAC sheep must feet pretty stupid to wait all day for a dumpy I-Phone when you could have one of these. Alexander the Great. Clearly Microsoft’s partnerships are paying off with this one. Reminds me of the Dell Ditty/MSN Music partnership that rocked the MP3 player industry. Microsoft is doing it again with the Big Mo. Great job, guys!

  8. Sir Gill Bates,

Pacer is a better name for a phone, than Gremlin. I too preferred the Gremlin but, only after the Javelin (AMX). My ranking of AMC cars are as follow:

    AMX
    Gremlin
    Hornet
    Pacer
(drum roll) Matador (the last model)

All by the way, could be used as names for Motorola phones instead of the xx-OKR.

  9. well, amazing it certainly is not. sure has a lot of nifty buttons though. and it is shiny.

honestly, with a slightly better camera, and a forward facing camera for video conferencing, the iPhone would be perfect for me…

  10. hehe, i actually stopped reading before “For the three readers now left reading” (saw it after reading the comments)

    😀

    brilliant, MDN is inspired this week ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  11. “Bell didn’t invent the phone. He was first in line at the patent office by a few hours.”

Unfortunately, he was second in line for the patent on the wiener. If not for that, today we would sing:

“I wish I were an Alexander Graham Bell wiener …”

  12. this has to be the most butt ugly red headed bastard child from hell cellphone. seriously? they have got to be doing meth to come up with crap like this
i really do hope they blow a ton of cash trying to morph this into a phone. Geez I think they used this in Forrest Gump to play table tennis.

  13. sugar grove,

Since there’s nothing in the picture to give it scale, this thing could be much bigger than we realize. In that case, it could be used as a snow board in a pinch. We might see it utilized in the next James Bond movie.

  14. “Bell didn’t invent the phone. He was first in line at the patent office by a few hours.”

    He still invented the phone.

It was his version that got the patent first, but that doesn’t negate the fact that he invented the phone.
