Mysterious sighting of ultra-thin gunmetal MacBooks continue around Apple HQ
Thursday, December 13, 2007 - 05:23 PM EST

"As next month's Macworld Expo rapidly approaches, sources are reporting additional sightings of an unfamiliar MacBook model floating around Apple's Cupertino-based campus," AppleInsider reports.

"Most recently, a source described a 'dark grey' or 'gunmetal' colored notebook of slender proportions making the rounds in an area where Apple traditionally conducts stress tests," AppleInsider reports.

"Though noticeably thinner but otherwise similar in size to the company's 13-inch MacBooks, the notebook appeared to have a metallic sheen to it," AppleInsider reports.

a 10" would be insanely popular in Japan... as Apple has really taken off in the last few years there.

Dec 13, 07 - 06:11 pm Comment from: LorD1776

So MicroSoft is supporting a site that totally hates it's guts. Another smart move from Redmond.

Dec 13, 07 - 06:13 pm Comment from: ron

There are some things I would never do for money. One of them is advertise MS.

Dec 13, 07 - 06:14 pm Comment from: marko

My guess is that Apple is dropping the white colored MacBook.
Replacing it with a gray colored plastic.
Apple has gone away from white hardware.
No more white iMac's, iPods etc.
Just a guess

Dec 13, 07 - 06:23 pm Comment from: KenC

Of course, the iMac is gunmetal gray.

Anyone installed the newest version of Quicktime, yet?

Dec 13, 07 - 06:31 pm Comment from: Paul

Imagine a Macbbok encased in that silver stuff thats on the back of iPods. Scratch / fingerprint magnet i Know but how sexy would it look.

Dec 13, 07 - 06:31 pm Comment from: Realist

Typical Apple; fob off the old stock on people over Christmas, holding back the new products until after most people have bought, forcing them to plunk down another huge wad of cash for an upgrade sooner than they otherwise would have.

Just another example of Shepherd Jobs and his blind, slavering following who will pay any price to have the privilege of buying his overpriced, prettied up version of last year's technology.

Dec 13, 07 - 06:35 pm Comment from: @Realist

Yeah, because the color of a MacBook really affects how well it works...

Dec 13, 07 - 06:38 pm Comment from: ron

You do have a real list towards Redmond.

Dec 13, 07 - 06:47 pm Comment from: Realist

Time to buck up kiddies. Saviour Jobs is about to roll out another over-priced junker for the masses, if the masses are rich. But they could get a great deal from Dell or Gateway instead running Vista. How long are all you folks going to keep buying this crap? Its been 30 years now. Why won't it just go away? When Vista came out it showed just how far Microsoft had come. It was painfully obvious that Shepherd jobs ripped of most of Vista. Look who has the BSD, now. That's right ladies, Leopard. Vista is a slick piece to software.
Please, anyone tell me why anyone would buy this little piece of Vaporware?

Dec 13, 07 - 06:50 pm Comment from: pr

@Realist.
I strongly recommend that you look for a book called
The Four Agreements. It will help you.

The first of these, which requires a bit of background to
fully understand it's impact and meaning is

"Be impeccable with your words"

If you follow this one agreement you will be much happier person.

Dec 13, 07 - 06:55 pm Comment from: pr

Here's a reasonable capsulization of the four simple agreements.
But get the book.

Dec 13, 07 - 06:55 pm Comment from: macbones

Well-
The entire MacbookPro line will be refreshed in March. There is really no good reason to refresh before that- it is currently the fastest Vista laptop right now, and a refresh will tick off folks who just got one for xmas. At most, a speedbump or price drop. The Macbook thin will likely come in January. Maybe a Macpro update.

Dec 13, 07 - 06:57 pm Comment from: Eric

@KenC, the current iMac is NOT gunmetal grey. Gunmetal grey is a dark grey with a bluish tint. The iMac's metal parts are natural aluminum in color, since it is made out of, ahem, naturally colored aluminum. .. naturally.

@Paul, that "silver stuff" on the back of some iPods is called stainless steel.

Dec 13, 07 - 07:15 pm Comment from: boyweho

I currently have a 12" PowerBook that turns three in Jan '08. In general, I like Apple's current MacBooks, but I'm not a fan of either their white or black color. When Apple releases a 13" MacBook (Pro) in aluminum, I will be happy to be one of the first people to buy it.

As for buying a system before Macworld, Macs make great gifts, so why not. But if you were buying for yourself, you probably would want to wait 'til after Macworld, unless whatyou want was refreshed within a few months before MW, though the Intel iMacs in '06 were a big surprise.

"reporting additional sightings of an unfamiliar MacBook model floating around Apple's Cupertino-based campus"

I read about these things in "Project:Bluebook"...

wait, maybe it was a book of blue pics that was a project of mine.

Dec 13, 07 - 07:23 pm Comment from: TowerTone

In other news, there have been sightings of the new Zune model, code named "The Big Vienna" floating around Redmond, more specifically, under Steve Ballmers depravation chair.....

What Realist said.

Your potential. Our passion.™

I love MDN -- I mean, they preach and preach - Mac's rule, Mac's are the best -- yet, somehow this is the place I come if I want to buy a PC - Vista ad banners are standing by!

Dec 13, 07 - 08:03 pm Comment from: Nosrac

I bet it's snappy.

MW: Man, as in "Man, I bet it's snappy."

Dec 13, 07 - 08:33 pm Comment from: NeonRed

New noteBooks... the back-panel IS the motherboard. The first implementation of monolithic circuits and structure. Soon no spinning hard drive...will not need a drive bay. Apple is way out on the edge of the neo-design curve. Silicon foundry and final product coalesce into one unit of pure function. Other Manufactures are still in the stone age.

Our Vision. Your potential.

Dec 13, 07 - 08:40 pm Comment from: bioness

I wonder whether it's a macbook or macbook pro... the applecare on those ones make a huge difference

Dec 13, 07 - 09:15 pm Comment from: maniMac

I bet the macbook is getting the metal look to it.

Dec 13, 07 - 09:20 pm Comment from: WBFS

@Realist

That's it, Steve Jobs ripped off all the really good features of Vista, at least the ones that actually work.

Vista is indeed a slick piece of - something!

Dec 13, 07 - 09:40 pm Comment from: Me In LA

Folks, "Realist" is merely trying to be the new Zune Tang™, of which we certainly don't need or want.
Don't fall for the obvious bait - he's a cheap imposter, and not in the slightest bit funny.
At least ZTG had his moments...

It'll be cooled by microwave digital heat transfer through the keyboard. Great for winter. If your skin don't peel off.

"It was painfully obvious that Shepherd jobs ripped of most of Vista."
Tiger's Widget, Vista Gadgets?

"Look who has the BSD, now."
Micro$oft Windoze XP. Been using Leopard for awhile, no complaint whatsoever.

Dec 14, 07 - 04:25 am Comment from: Metryq

I like the way these things are always "sightings," like Bigfoot or a flying saucer. One has to laugh and admit that those who cry "Mac cultist!" may have something there... every other company dreams of such consumer enthusiasm.

Dec 14, 07 - 05:30 am Comment from: DJ

Oh noooo... not gunmetal!

This household already has three laptops in use, but gunmetal??

Resistance is useless.

Dec 14, 07 - 05:43 am Comment from: One Guy From Finland

Boring. When I saw the prototype of the Cube years ago the cover was made of a very rough black metal. We saw only the interiors as they were, but we did not have any idea how the final product would look like. I think this is the case here too. There are always prototypes that Apple uses to teach people how to maintain and use them. Move on.

Dec 14, 07 - 06:17 am Comment from: John C. Randolph

I'm calling bullshit on this one. Machines that haven't been introduced yet are kept under very tight wraps. NFW anyone's just randomly spotting them around the campus.

I saw it hovering off the floor yesterday here at Apple.

When I looked out my cubical - man - it just flew down the hall way as if it knew I had seen it.

UFM - What will Apple think of next.

Dec 14, 07 - 10:02 am Comment from: MacSheikh

Am i crazy or is Realist sounding more and more like Zune Tang?

Nah...Zune Tang's funny.

//Start Feeding Troll
@Realist, must be nice to be the only guy with a computer in the slums, you keep calling Mac users rich, so I guess you are on welfare then, I feel for you having to be stuck in the food line using a Windows machine.

As for "Typical Apple; fob off the old stock on people over Christmas, holding back the new products until after most people have bought, forcing them to plunk down another huge wad of cash for an upgrade sooner than they otherwise would have." anyone who is in the know and would run out and buy a new Mac, would also have the good sense to wait. All those buying for Christmas are not likely to through out there investment just cause Jobs gives us some new shiny goodness.

//End Feeding Troll, hope you enjoyed grin

Dec 14, 07 - 02:05 pm Comment from: HMCIV

The new mac laptops can float!?! Maybe it's to avoid flying chairs

Dec 16, 07 - 01:08 pm Comment from: Buddy

Floating to the top of Apple-stardom... and increasing stock value.

I think they mean that kind of float.

Nah - hovering - yeah - why am I so lame.

Dec 16, 07 - 07:19 pm Comment from: News

Sounds like Apple is evaluating the slim lightweight Dells. Put an Apple sticker on it, run Mac OS X, you have an instant macbook upgrade.

Dec 16, 07 - 07:22 pm Comment from: Real World

"currently the fastest Vista laptop right now, and a refresh will tick off folks who just got one for xmas."

The Macbook never was the fasted Vista notebook, only the fastest PC world tested and it's sure not the fastest now. Welcome to the WinTel world where performance leaps forward every 2-3 months not very 1-2 years.
