NBC’s Today Show hosts rave about Apple’s MacBook Air (with video)
Thursday, January 24, 2008 - 12:26 PM EDT

Apple Online Store"The folks at Apple have done it again, " Meredith Vieira reports for NBC's Today Show. "But, this time it's not an iPod or an iPhone, it is a laptop called the MacBook Air... thin as can be."

The Today Show starts out showing Apple's MacBook Air television commercial in its entirety. Vieira, along with Matt Lauer, Ann Curry, and Al Roker then discuss the Air in what can only be described as rapturous lust to own Apple's new ultra-thin notebook themselves.

Vieira exclaims, "I've heard that if you lick it, you own it!" And then, she proceeds to do just that.

Curry says, "How many times do you not take your computer because it's going to be too heavy to lug around? And [with] this.. there's no excuse." Lauer responds with a chuckle, "Oh, Ann, that's exactly what they wanted you to say." Curry humorously protests, "I'm not doing a commercial here!" Viera provides the punchline, "But, if she can get one, she'll do one."

Vieira, along with Matt Lauer, Ann Curry, and Al Roker gush over Apple's new MacBook Air (3:06):

This is free publicity for Apple... This MacBook Air thing might suprise people, selling like hot cakes!!! Who knows???

Jan 24, 08 - 01:35 pm Comment from: TowerTone

So I guess Meredith owns a lot of men....

Does Meredith leak those men too???

Jan 24, 08 - 01:38 pm Comment from: ralph from berlin

probably worth 1 million $ in advertising ...

Jan 24, 08 - 01:38 pm Comment from: Ampar

A Today Show hosts rave would be a weird party. Matt with a pacifier and a glow stick and Meredith with the party "favors"?

Jan 24, 08 - 01:38 pm Comment from: Mac+

I meant "lick"

Jan 24, 08 - 01:44 pm Comment from: Apple

Looks like the Today Show is good for something after all.

Jan 24, 08 - 01:49 pm Comment from: Angelus520

Yeah, I saw the segment and it was cool, though they did point out the usual negatives. Out on the plaza, Matt pulled it out of an interoffice envelope but he pulled it out upside down. Then he proceeded to taunt the crowd with it. Gotta love free publicity.

Jan 24, 08 - 01:49 pm Comment from: deepdish

I hate listening to idiots talk about technology!!!!!!

Jan 24, 08 - 02:02 pm Comment from: 84 Mac Guy

If yahoos the the Today Show hosts are drolling over the Air, then this puppy is going to sell like hotcakes.

Jan 24, 08 - 02:03 pm Comment from: Spark

I'd be willing to bet that Apple paid to have the ad run in exchange for the extended segment where the hosts gush over it.

Jan 24, 08 - 02:04 pm Comment from: Jacob

Wow. That guy was reading off a list? He couldn't even be bothered to learn a little bit about the product beforehand? It's not that hard. I knew all the details they mentioned within minutes of it being introduced, and probably could have repeated them back without a piece of paper, too.

Jan 24, 08 - 02:04 pm Comment from: 84 Mac Guy

Maybe I should take the time to proof read what I write before hitting the send key. Let me try this again.

If yahoos like the Today Show hots are drolling over the Air, then this puppy is going to sell like hotcakes.

Jan 24, 08 - 02:09 pm Comment from: G4Dualie

Walt Mossberg was on CNBC to offer his take on the MBA and right in the middle of the segment they cut him off — to rush to a breaking news story — but then begin airing a trades commercial!!

When they return for the breaking news, it turns out to be just some a talking head who has been informed the Fed knew nothing about Societe Generale's 7 billion dollar loss before they cut the Prime interest rate by 3/4s point.

The Street are fools, just a bunch of cackling chickens.

Jan 24, 08 - 02:13 pm Comment from: MaLvado

I'm glad to see they were well versed on the Air.

They even had positive responses to any perceived negatives.

Its absolute cool to see the effect that Apple products have on people. A real Wow factor!

Go Apple!

I plan to get one of these soon....I never use my DVD drive on my Macbook pro.... or the ports. I do need a lighter laptop, and the Air looks like its the one!

Jan 24, 08 - 02:37 pm Comment from: Gosh

Surprised how many Mac fans were negative about the MacBook Air at launch with the old Wintel - pro PC argument about it being under spec'd (see MacWorld Poll).

Actually need third party to tell them it's lovely and amazing.

Perhaps the move to intel has changed the outlook of Mac fans and we are becoming spec obsessive and unable to appreciate a such a wondrous thing anymore?.

Jan 24, 08 - 02:37 pm Comment from: Rich

Oh geee..let's go buy a MBA because the air heads on the Today show like it so much ! If you read Mossberg's review which is mostly postive, there are a LOT of serious shortcomings to the new MBA that will keep it out of the hands of most road warriers. Sorry but the price is prohibitive to most people especially with a battery that one cant replace

Jan 24, 08 - 02:40 pm Comment from: silverhawk

The MBA also made a big hit on the CBS morning news show.

Jan 24, 08 - 02:53 pm Comment from: iWill

Who knew Al Roker was such such a Mac head. Maybe Bizarro Ballmer is actually Al! Ever notice how they aren't in the room at the same time? Hmmm...

Jan 24, 08 - 02:59 pm Comment from: NavyTim

If it wasn't for youtube, no one would have seen this....

Jan 24, 08 - 03:24 pm Comment from: KingMel

Apple products draw emotional reactions. Notice how everyone wanted to touch it as soon as they saw it. That's Apple design at work, and it's the first step towards purchasing.

Jan 24, 08 - 03:33 pm Comment from: MBA add

i love the song that's the soundtrack on the new MBA commercial.

Jan 24, 08 - 03:47 pm Comment from: Ogre

I was impressed with Roker's familiarity with the MBA as well. Maybe with his stomach stapling he's trying to drop some weight from his laptop as well.

Jan 24, 08 - 04:14 pm Comment from: Ferf Muckmeyer

The buzz is a lot more positive than people think. This could be another Apple grand slam. I starting to believe!

Jan 24, 08 - 04:32 pm Comment from: Marty Wells

Did ya catch that Matt said the kids have a Mac at home so with this he'd be able to do the video chat during all those many trips?

Jan 24, 08 - 04:34 pm Comment from: NeonRed

There was a time when computer users were just happy it worked. We are entering the age when a portable is something to be worked with. And it needs to be melded smoothly in with all the things in the workaday life. Like a cell or an electronic car key.. one does not plan, it is just conveniently there.

Jan 24, 08 - 04:41 pm Comment from: Merlion

I wish she would lick my penis instead.

Jan 24, 08 - 04:42 pm Comment from: eric

"So what can it NOT DO?"

Great first line .... morons ....

"Well it doesn't have this and it doesn't have this ... "

Because if it did ... it wouldn't be an ultra thin laptop you friggin idiots .....

Bunch of techno illiterates ....

Jan 24, 08 - 04:49 pm Comment from: JadedEye

From a marketing and PR perspective this is absolutely golden. The traditional Today Show audience is not the typical Mac or PC buyer. The enthusiasm, coupled with the comment from Lauer that his family has Macs at home does have impact with the demographic that watches the Today Show.

Professional PR people DREAM about this kind of free promotion. It's different from advertising significantly. Advertising is done by the vendor saying how good the products are. PR is someone else with credibility saying how good the products are.

Absolutely brilliant.

The Air is spectacular, and I'm sure it's going to do just fine. It's not for everyone, but for those who don't need to make movies and stuff, it's perfect.

Jan 24, 08 - 07:08 pm Comment from: ken1w

It's fun to watch the reaction from "non-techies."

In a later version of MacBook Air, Apple should put a proprietary "slot" connector on the opposite side, next to the power connector. In my mind, a "hub" would click on to the connector and provide two more USB ports, a FireWire port, an Ethernet port, and a pass-through for the power connector (if it gets covered).

What's the matter, got a crick in your neck?

Jan 24, 08 - 09:06 pm Comment from: Mr. Reeee

ken1w...

Great idea! This would be like the slot on the PowerBook Duo. It would also extend the general usefulness of the MB Air dramatically.

Hell, I'd settle for just a FireWire port.

NBC's Zucker wants to make peace with Apple

It's the only thing that makes sense for plug this strong. wink

Next we will hear NBC is renting movies on iTunes.

Jan 24, 08 - 11:05 pm Comment from: Official

Yep, the Air passes the "lick test".

Jan 24, 08 - 11:37 pm Comment from: Back2Mac

OK. I've been reading a lot of the comments about the MacBook Air. I can't believe how backwards so many of the comments are. The MacBook Air is the future. Now.

Optical disks make little sense with Broadband distribution reaching more and more homes. No Ethernet port? I haven't used Ethernet in 2 years. Wi-fi is cheap, easy, and convenient. Only one USB port? You can use a hub, but as we go forward, more and more devices will simply use BlueTooth or Wi-fi. Small hard drive? That's what Time Capsule is designed for. Eventually, services like iDisk will probably even replace this. No instantly swappable battery? Can't say I or anyone I know has ever had an issue with this. My iPods and iPhone work fine without replacable batteries.

I'm just shocked at all the Mac/Apple loyalists who can't see this for what it is. This is the future. Now.

And I believe Apple will sell a LOT more than people are expecting. The thing is sexy. Sexy like no other laptop on the market. The point that really convinced me? My wife teaches at a small inner-city elementary school. She told me that today one of her 3rd graders was going on and on about the MacBook Air. If an inner city 3rd grader (hardly Apple's target market for the Air) is that excited about it, I can hardly imagine how excited those who can actually afford one are.

Just my thoughts, but I think Apple has another hit on their hands. Now, if the stock would just hurry up and get back to $200+!!! Soon enough.

NBC: "We're buttering up our asshole to make room for the GIANT iTUNES DILDO!"

MDN magic word: 'still' - As in: "Hold still whilst I stick it in."

Jan 25, 08 - 07:58 am Comment from: British Mac Head

People have pointed out that the MBA is somewhat of a niche product. It is highly portable and has everything you need for a road warrior that doesn't want to have to carry around the weight of a bigger notebook and extra battery.

A photographer that edited on-site would benefit greatly from the portability (with good sized screen) of this notebook.

For that type of use, what's NOT to like about it?

Admittedly, it's currently not for me as I don't travel much but if I did it would be worth considering.

Saying that, I am actually thinking about changing jobs in the future and the new job would require a notebook that I could easily carry around with me as well as quite a lot of other equipment. I will use my MacBook initially but if I decide the extra weight is too much for me I will invest in one of these babies.

Jan 25, 08 - 09:21 am Comment from: Jooop

Typical. Reviews of Macintosh computers always start off with, "What can't you do with this machine?" and then listing all the down sides? People don't review Dell's like that.

Jan 25, 08 - 09:44 am Comment from: MacRaven

"I wish she would lick my penis instead."

If your penis did everything the MBA does, maybe a lot of women would.
